Essence bestselling author Tracy Brown has passed away age 48 and now fans are mourning the New York literary personality’s sudden death.
A New Yorker through and through, Brown became known for her books set on Staten Island, her hometown. Some of her most popular titles include Aftermath, Snapped, Twisted, White Lines, and Criminal Minded. Brown’s career spanned two decades in which she published 13 novels. Her résumé also includes work as a podcaster, director, and playwright.
Tracy Brown’s sudden death has left many of her fans shocked and grieving.
Tracy Brown’s children confirm her death age 48
On Saturday, May 20, Tracy Brown passed away, as confirmed by her three children on the author’s official Facebook page the following day.
“Our mom, the illustrious Tracy Brown, passed away on 5/20/23,” the children wrote. “There’s so much to say about her that we simply don’t have the words for at this time. We will keep her name and legacy in high esteem and we ask you to keep us lifted in prayer. We also ask for privacy as we mourn an unfathomable loss.”
As of yet, no cause of death has been given.
The late author is not to be confused with Tracy Brown Bering, an individual involved in the case of convicted murderess Jodi Arias. Brown Bering was featured in this year’s Lifetime movie, Bad Behind Bars: Jodi Arias. She passed away just a month before the movie was released.
A look back over Tracy’s writing career
Born in Staten Island on June 8, 1974, Tracy Brown found literary success in the early 2000s with the publication of her first novel, Black (2003). She would go on to publish another novel the following year, setting off a steady stream of written works and building a fanbase.
Brown’s latest novel, Hold You Down, was published last year.
The late author was also an alumnus of John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She also ran a nonprofit organization called We Are Ladies First, LTD which seeks to inform, inspire and empower young women in Staten Island. This organization was founded in 2014.

Tracy Brown’s fans pay tribute to the late author
As news of Tracy Brown’s sudden passing is confirmed, her fans have taken to the internet to pay homage to the late writer.
“I appreciate Tracy Brown for her work and for being the kind of author that didn’t mind socializing w/her readers. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones,” one fan tweeted in support.
Another described her as “a literal gem in the literature world.”
