In "Big Sky" Season 3, Episode 2 ("The Woods Are Lovely, Dark and Deep"), there are a couple of references made that immediately caused "Supernatural" fans to do a double-take. The first is when Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles) tells Deputy Weaver (Teri Reeves) "I'll call your office. Who knows, you could be pretending to be a Fed." She replies, "If you think that's necessary." He smiles and says, "Oh, you'd be surprised." Many viewers immediately recalled "Supernatural," when Dean and Sam (Jared Padalecki) pretended to be FBI agents. "Beau's comments about checking credentials because people can pretend to be FBI ... Supernatural reference," @TaylorWood717 tweeted.
Later, Beau and Jenny (Katheryn Winnick) are visiting Cassie's (Kylie Bunbury) new home, and he gives her two housewarming gifts. The first is bread, so she never goes hungry. But the second — a container of salt — leaves Cassie confused. "So you're always protected," Beau tells her. After staring at it for a second Cassie says, "Oh, from demons!" as Beau looks on, smiling.
While both scenes made "Supernatural" and Ackles' fans go nuts on social media, viewers also see the strategy "Big Sky" is using — and admit it's working. "The writers and EPs are not dumb. Jensen comes with a fan base that has been around for 15+ years," tweeted @waywardnerd67. "Keep feeding us SPN references and showing us single layer Ackles. We will reward you with ratings."
