Past Controversy

The 2013 bloodbath in Atimonan, Quezon province, which left 13 dead, was one of a number of contentious gun battles in which Marantan had previously been engaged. Marantan was the Calabarzon regional police’s deputy intelligence director when he oversaw the police operation against accused “jueteng” operator Vic Siman, who was among those killed on January 6, 2013, with the assistance of soldiers.

Shootout Or Rubout?

Marantan claims that when the government soldiers were flagged down at a checkpoint, Siman’s group opened fire on them. The National Bureau of Investigation disputed the police’s account of the incident, saying that all signs pointed to a rubout with Siman as the intended target.

Eight alleged criminals were killed in February 2010 by Marantan, who was leading the 415th Provincial Police Mobile Group at the time. The clash took place in Candelaria town in Quezon at a checkpoint manned by Marantan’s men and Army troops, just like the firefight in Atimonan.

He also took part in a police operation against a robbery gang in Paraaque City in December 2008 that resulted in the deaths of 16 people, including a migrant worker and his daughter, 7, who were caught in the crossfire.
