Otherwise, it will spread instead of coming off.
• Cleaning Small Spots: The small spots on Timberland leather boots are not permanent. You can use a good eraser to either remove them or fade them enough so that they are not noticeable anymore.
• Cleaning Oil Stains: I would say use some baking soda here. Take a small quantity of baking soda on a toothbrush and rub it on the stains in a circular motion. Now put the boots under a running faucet and the stains on your boots will flush away. Don’t allow the water to dry on the boots. Instead, wipe the water with a dry cloth.
• Cleaning Large Stains: Large stains on leather caused by sweat, snow, and water are very easy to clean. You can use any mild detergent to clean them. Take some detergent on your palm, add a few drops of water to it, and apply on the boots vigorously. Wash the boots under a running faucet and wipe with a dry cloth.
• Nourish the Leather: The leather won’t get ruined with the Timberland cleaning methods discussed above. The only issue that may arise is the use of baking soda and detergent may rip the leather off its essential protective oils. This phenomenon makes it crucial that you use good leather oil to recreate that protective layer.

Then Remove laces from the shoes. You can wash the laces separately. Use warm water and soap. Take some hot water in a bowl and add bathing soap or bathing gel. Rub the laces until the dirt is completely gone from the laces. After scrubbing keep them in hot water for some time. You can wash them in the washing machine also but don’t wash with other clothes if they are filthy. Dry them after washing.

3. Clean both sole:

Timberland boots have a rubber sole. You can easily wash off the extra dirt from the rubber sole with a used toothbrush. Add detergent or dishwashing soap in warm water and apply it with the brush to clean the sole. It is better to use toothbrush than shoe brush as it can reach the deep space into the treads of the soles. Scrub until you see the treads of the soles.

After scraping out the sole, rinse it with warm water. Do not use too hot water as It may damage the soles. Dry them in air after cleaning.

i. Wipe the outside of your boot:

Using few baby wipes or wet wipes, Rub the outside of your boots including the fabric layer line around the boot. Keep rubbing until the entire surface of the shoe gets clean. If you cannot arrange baby wipes, use pieces of cloth dipped in warm water.

ii. The perfect cleaning agent for your boot:

To choose a cleaning agent, find out which type of fabric material used in your shoes. You may find it in the packet. But if you don’t find, look at the product description of your shoe on Amazon. Don’t use any cleaning agent unless you are sure about the fabric.

It comes in both leather and suede style which includes Wheat & Nubuck. For Leather and Wheat leather, remember to buy a leather cleaning agent according to the color of your leather. For Nubuck and Suede, you need a special foam cleaner.

• Use the foam cleaner for nubuck or suede boots. Timberland has their custom made foam cleaner. You can find it in any drugstore or supermarket. If you do not have foam cleanser, you can use a cotton swab dipped in dish-washing detergent.

• Use leather cleaner for leather or wheat leather boots. It usually comes in gel or cream form. Timberland has their leather cleaner as Timberland Boot Sauce. You can buy it or any other relevant leather cleaner if you want.

iv. Clean tough stains:

If you find stains left in your shoe, use baking soda to remove it. Just dip a cloth in water and then in baking soda. Scrub over the stain carefully. Make sure to use a fresh and clean cloth.

v. Let it Dry:

Once you have finished to clean your Timberland boots, let them dry in natural weather. Don’t dry it using a dryer because It won’t work. Putting them into dryer can compromise the smoothness of the leather if it’s thin.

Don’t keep the boots near a fireplace or gas oven. Fire might melt down the glue that’s holding the sole to the leather.

vi. Get rid of the scuff marks:

Timberland boots are made from nubuck leather. Nubuck is buffed during the manufacturing process to give it a velvet-like surface. The top-grain nubuck used by Timberland to make its iconic yellow boots is waterproof but not completely water-repellent. Rain, snow, and slush can all stain the surface of your Timberland boots, especially if it’s muddy.

The most effective way to keep your boots looking their best is to treat them with nubuck protector before they come into contact with the elements. The Timberland website recommends its own branded Balm Proofer™ XL All Purpose Protector spray. This spray restores “water and stain repellency” by adding a protective layer to the nubuck uppers of your boots but any brand of suede/nubuck protector will give the same result.

Natural Timberland boot cleaners you can find at home

Even if you use protector spray, your Timberland boots will likely become scuffed and stained over time. But it is possible to reverse the damage with natural products you can find at home.

Baby Wipes

Using a baby wipe to clean your Timberland boots is am easy last-minute measure. Baby wipes are formulated to be safe and gentle on a babies’ sensitive skin. There are no harsh chemicals in baby wipes that could damage your Timberlands and as the wipes can be thrown away after use they’re convenient for cleaning your boots on the go.

Dish detergent

Black Timberlands are made from the same full-grain nubuck leather as yellow Timberlands. As a result, cleaning methods and products are exactly the same. It’s more important to use suede/nubuck protector with black Timberlands because it’s more difficult to notice when your boots are becoming stained. As with yellow Timberlands, using vinegar to clean black Timberlands is a last resort.

Their signature waterproof material and ability to withstand cold weather is what makes Timberlands popular among young and adult population. However, same as any long-lasting and rugged footwear, Timberland boots also require regular cleaning and maintenance. Some even recommend you clean them once a week.

So, how to clean Timberlands without spending too much money? Well, there are ways to do it with household ingredients.

Prepare boots for cleaning

• Never put boots in a washing machine because it can damage them.

Cleaning Hiking Boot Outsoles

Though caked-on mud won’t damage your boots, removing it will restore them to full traction. Also, having clean outsoles prevents you from transporting invasive species from one hiking area to another.

Brush the outsoles vigorously and dislodge pebbles that are stuck. For stubbornly caked-on dirt, soak just the outsoles and then use a hose to power-wash the gunk away.

Hiking Boot Drying and Storage Tips

• Remove insoles and let them air-dry separately from the boots.
• Dry boots at normal temperature in a place with low humidity.
• Do not use a heat source (fireplace, campfire, wood stove, radiator, heater, etc.). High heat weakens adhesives and prematurely ages leather.
• For quicker drying, use a fan.
• You can also stuff newspaper into the boots to speed drying; change the paper frequently (whenever it’s damp).
• Store boots where temperatures are stable and normal. Do not store boots in attics, garages, car trunks or any damp, hot or unventilated place.

Conditioning Your Boots

Use a conditioner when your boots’ full-grain leather (leather that looks smooth rather than rough on the outside) appears dry or cracked. Other types of leather—suede and nubuck—don’t require conditioning. Conditioner can also be used if your new full-grain leather boots need to be broken in quickly.

Use a conditioner judiciously. Healthy leather functions best when moisturized. Too much conditioner, though, makes boots too soft, reducing the support they provide.

Do not use Mink Oil or similar oils designed for industrial boots; it over-softens the type of dry-tanned leather used in hiking footwear.

HOW TO CLEAN LEATHER BOOTS FOR RESALE

If you follow our blog you’ll know that we have a penchant for buying boots off eBay, polishing them up a bit, and flipping them for a huge profit! The leather boots shown above are the literal same pair of boots. Not just the same model, but the picture on the left shows the listing from which I purchased the boots for $2.25. With 20 mins of elbow grease and better picturing I turned around and sold them for $59.95 + shipping! In this post we’ll show you how to clean your leather boots and get top dollar for them!

Will this met work for my boots?
Well, that depends on the leather. This tutorial is meant for smooth leathers. If the leather on your shoes/boots has a fuzzy feel to it it is likely either suede (pretty much inside out leather) or nubuck (leather sanded to a velvety feel). For these leathers you need specific cleaning and you should not use anything oil based or even wet.

THE GUINEA PIG PAIR

For this how-to I picked up a pair of leather/gore-tex Timberland boots for $9.99 at my local Savers. (If I was smart I would have donated some non-selling duds and gotten a 30% off but I was in a hurry to share this with you…)

Not too shabby but definitely nothing to write home about. If these boots aren’t screaming CLEAN ME! to you then you’re probably in the wrong line of business. So let’s see what we can do to make these shine…

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

For this project, you’ll need to purchase two products, a cleaner and a conditioner. We used the following two products because they are cheap and get the job done! Are there better products out there? Definitely! But our purpose here is to clean the boots, do it quickly, and maintain our profits. You can probably find both of these products at your local grocery store..or you can click the pictures below to buy through us so we can keep the lights on around here! 🙂

If you’re really bringing some leather back from the dead (we’re talking restoring leather boots that are cracking or dried up) then you need to also pick up some form of leather lotion such as (my favorite) Leather Honey. It will restore the moisture in anything from couches to handbags. Get it here.

STEP 1: BRUSHING

Before you break open the saddle soap, you’ll need to get the majority of the dirt off the boots. This can be accomplished with either a stiff brush or with water. For this pair, we knocked off what dirt we could with a stiff brush and then washed the boots in the tub. This removed 99% of the dirt but just be aware that if you follow this route you’ll have to wait until the boots completely dry before conditioning them.

STEP 2: SADDLE SOAP

Once your boots are no longer covered with any major grim, take a damp rag, rub some soap onto it, and start rubbing the soap onto your boots! (We’ve found that a circular motion works best). After working it over the surface of the boot, wipe it off with a clean damp rag and repeat as necessary.

When finished with the whole boot, give the boots a good wipe down and then let them sit and dry. After they’re dry, you can buff them with a soft dry rag. This is optional but we’ve found that it results in a great shine at the end!

STEP 3: CONDITIONING

Conditioning Oil contains a rich blend of conditioners that nourish and waterproof smooth leather. Be aware before you start that if you’re conditioning a very light leather, oiling it may cause darkening. Not a problem for us here so let’s move on!

If your boots are clean and dry, get a dab of conditioning oil on a rag and wipe a thin coat onto a small working area. This part takes a bit of patience. Work the oil into to boot, focusing on seams and creases. Make sure to wipe off the excess as you go.

Amazing right? Of course it is! Just a bit of oil returns the leather to its natural color and luster. Check our the toes of the boots on the right..

Tip: Make sure the boots are unlaced to you can get conditioner on the tongue and into every corner of the boot. Be thorough! After you have wiped off the excess, let the boots sit for a day or two during which time the color will equalize. Conditioning can sometimes leave dark spots or unequal color between the boots but some time drying has always solved this problem for us!

STEP 4: ADMIRE, PHOTOGRAPH, AND SELL!

Take a minute to step back and admire your fully restored leather boots! Then get those boots stuffed, take some pictures, and list on eBay! Although there is no way to know for sure, our cleaning definitely increased the value of these boots at least $20. How long do you usually spend cleaning boots?

​We can tell you that prepping items is very important for eBay. If you’re an eBay seller you know by now that looks sell. I washed my Timberland boots in order to remove the stains & dirt marks, but the boots are faded in color. I was wondering was there anyway to restore the tan back to the boots? such as taking them to the dry cleaner or a shop where they clean boots? HELP ME PLEASE I LOVE TIMS.

Shoe polish can work wonders on the appearance of leather. You can use the neutral colour(usually best for light coloured leather) or pick a colour close to the original or a darker colour. It doesn’t last all that long but is easy to re-do and in fact should be re-done every week or so if the shoes are worn daily. If you’re using the paste wax that comes in a small flat tin, you apply it to dry leather with a small piece of rag, let it dry for half an hour or more, then shine it with a soft brush or another clean soft cloth. They sell special brushes to use to shine shoe polish, well worth buying. If you buy a liquid kind, follow the instructions that come with it. The paste kind probably gives a bit more protection

You should also brush them clean before applying a shoe polish, brush away any loose dirt. A small stiff natural bristle brush is good for that, gets into all the corners. If these are boots that get wet and dirty, there are a number of products intended to help keep them unstained and water resistant. There is spray silicone for leather and there are other products to help protect leather. Read the labels. If the boots came with care instructions, see what is recommended.

Next time the boots need a really good clean, look for a leather cleaner or even a saddle soap. It will be easier on the leather than washing them another way.

If the boots look really thrashed and seem to have lost a lot of colour, there are also leather dyes which you should be able to get at any shoe repair place or leather shop. If not, try online. Fiebings is the brand name. The stuff really works and can make leather look just about like new in terms of the colour, but do the dyeing outdoors or on a large area protected by lots of newspaper or a sheet of plastic. If the dye gets on anything, it isn’t coming off. After dyeing, use a shoe polish to help maintain the fresh colour.
