Don’t like notifications at inopportune times? Here’s how you can completely disable app notifications in Windows 10.

Unlike the previous versions, Windows apps don’t need to have their own notification system. They can use the built-in notification center to display all kinds of notifications. As you can guess, the notification center makes it easy to keep track of and manage all notifications in one place.

As good as the new notification system is, some apps show constant notifications distracting you from the actual work. This might reduce your overall productivity.

If that’s the case, here is how to disable Windows 10 notifications completely.

Disable Windows 10 Notifications

When it comes to disabling notifications, Windows 10 gives you a fair bit of control. For instance, you can either turn off notifications for specific apps or disable notifications entirely. i.e, for all apps either with the help of the Settings app or the Group Policy Editor. I will show all three methods. Use the one you need.

Jump to:

Note: If you are looking to temporarily disable app notifications, you can enable Focus Assist. To turn on Focus Assist, click on the taskbar Notifications icon and click on the “Focus Assist” button. Focus Assist will automatically turn off itself after a few hours. To turn it off manually, click on the button again.

Disable notifications for specific apps

Turning off individual app notifications is useful when you have an app that is constantly showing notifications for unnecessary things like offers, events, etc. A good example of this type of behavior would be gaming and social media apps.

1. To disable individual app notifications, open the Settings app by pressing the keyboard shortcut Win + I . Alternatively, click on the Notifications icon and then click on the “Settings” button.

2. Go to “System -> Notifications and Actions” in the Settings app.

3. On the right panel, scroll down and you will see all the “Get notifications from these senders” section. This section lists all the apps that can show notifications. Here, “Turn off” an app to disable notification access for that particular application.

That is it. You’ve disabled Windows 10 notifications from specific apps.

To enable notifications again for an app, toggle the switch to “On” and you are done.

Disable All App Notifications on Windows 10

Disabling all Windows 10 notifications is useful when you don’t want to be bothered with any app notifications whatsoever.

1. Open Settings using the shortcut Win + I . You can also search for it in the start menu.

2. Navigate to the “System -> Notifications and Actions” page in the Settings app

3. Turn off the “Get notification from apps and other senders” option. You will find the option under the Notifications section in the right panel.

As soon as you turn off the setting, you will no longer receive any notifications either in the notification center or on the lock screen.

To enable the notifications again, turn on “Get notification from apps and other senders.”

Disable Windows 10 Notifications with Group Policy GPO

If you want to completely disable Windows 10 notifications then the group policy editor is the way to go. This method is especially useful for system administrators or if have multiple computers to manage.

1. First off, Open the Group Policy Editor. To do that, search for “gpedit.msc” in the start menu and click on the top result.

2. Go to the “User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar” folder in the Group Policy Editor.

3. Double-click on the “Remove Notifications and Action Center” policy. You will find the policy in the right panel.

4. Select “Enabled” in the policy properties window. Click on the “Apply” and “Ok” button to save the changes.

Keep in mind that some apps can still show notifications even when you turn off notifications. This is because these apps use their own notification system rather than using the one provided by Windows 10. You can see this type of behavior in applications like antivirus and firewall. In those cases, you have to disable notifications for that app by changing its settings.

That is all. It is that simple to disable notifications on Windows 10. If you are stuck or need some help, comment below and I will try to help as much as possible.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

Notifications can be distracting, but Windows 10 has a one-click switch that disables all of them. You can also disable notifications for individual apps, or hide the many other notifications that appear throughout Windows.

How to Disable All Notifications

Windows 10’s Settings app allows you to control notifications. To launch it, open the Start menu, and then click the gear-shaped “Settings” icon—or press Windows+I.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

Navigate to System > Notifications & Actions in the Settings window.

To disable notifications for every app on your system, turn the “Get notifications from apps and other senders” toggle off.

This option will disable the notifications for both Windows 10 Store apps and classic desktop apps.

How to Disable Individual App Notifications

To disable notifications for individual apps, head to System > Notifications & Actions, and then scroll down to the “Get notifications from these senders” list. This list shows Windows system features, Store apps, and traditional desktop apps that can send notifications.

Set an app to “Off” and Windows prevent that app from showing notifications.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

The above options only work for apps that use the traditional Windows notification method. Apps with custom notification bubbles continue to show their own notifications unless you close them or disable the notifications within those specific apps. Most apps that show notifications offer an option to disable them. Just open that particular app and look in its settings window for an option that disables notifications.

How to Temporarily Mute Notifications

Windows 10 has a “Quiet Hours” feature in the Fall Creators Update, and this will be expanded upon and renamed to “Focus Assist” in the April 2018 Update. This is essentially a “Do Not Disturb” mode for Windows 10.

When Quiet Hours (or Focus Assist) is enabled, notifications are temporarily hidden. By default, when you turn Quiet Hours on, it’s enabled between midnight and 6 a.m. on the Fall Creators Update, but you’ll be able to easily customize these hours on the April 2018 Update. Head to Settings > System > Focus Assist to configure how it works if you’re running the new version of Windows 10.

To activate this feature, open the Action Center by clicking the Action Center icon near the bottom right corner of your taskbar or pressing Windows+A. Click the “Quiet hours” (or “Focus assist”) tile to toggle it on or off. Select the “Expand” link at the bottom of the Action Center if you don’t see this tile in the top row.

How to Disable Advertising Notifications

Windows 10 has a lot of built-in advertising, and many of these advertisements appear as notifications. For example, you’ll sometimes see pop-up notifications on the taskbar informing you about Microsoft Edge’s features and “suggestions” about features you should use. These suggestions are also notifications.

You can disable all these advertisements with options built into Windows 10 itself, but Microsoft has scattered the options you’ll need across the operating system. Follow our guide to disabling all the advertising in Windows 10 to stop Windows from pestering you with ads.

How to Disable Live Tiles in the Start Menu

While live tiles aren’t traditional pop ups that interrupt you, they can certainly distract. For example, the News, Mail, and Facebook apps have live tiles, so you’ll find yourself notified with new headlines, emails, and Facebook messages every time you open your Start menu.

If you don’t want to see live tile notifications, just right-click or long-press a tile in your Start menu, and then select More > Turn Live Tile Off. The tile remains pinned for easy access, but it just functions as a simple shortcut and isn’t constantly updated with new content.

How to Disable Lock Screen Notifications

Windows 10 also allows apps to display notifications as status messages on your lock screen. If you don’t want to see status messages on your lock screen, you can remove them.

To control what appears on your lock screen, head to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Apps displaying content on your lock screen appear under “Choose an app to show detailed status” and “Choose apps to show quick status.” To remove an app from your lock screen, click its icon here, and then select the “None” option. You can also select another app, if you’d rather see another app’s notifications on your lock screen.

Disable Notification Area Icons

Even after you disable notifications, many apps continue running in your “Notification Area” (also known as the System Tray). These apps often update icons here with badges and animations informing you about their status.

To hide icons from your notification area, just drag them onto the up arrow to the left of the icons, and then into the little panel that appears. That panel holds any Notification Area icons that you don’t want to see right on your Taskbar. (Fun fact: the official name of that panel is the Overflow Notification Pane.) The apps you drag there remain running in the background, but you won’t see their notifications on your taskbar unless you click the up arrow. You can also right-click many of these applications and close them if you don’t want them running in the background.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

The Settings app also allows you to customize your notification area icons. Just head to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. In the right pane, scroll down to the “Notification Area” section, and then click the “Select which icons appear on the taskbar” link. Set any icon to “Off” and it will be hidden in that overflow panel. This accomplishes the same thing as quickly dragging and dropping the icons from your taskbar.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

Windows 10 provides many more options for dealing with notifications than Windows 7 does. For example, when using Windows 7, you have to disable notifications from within each individual app you use. Windows 7 provides no way of blocking an app’s notifications at the system level, as Windows 10 does via the Settings app, nor does it provide a Quiet Hours or Focus Assist-like mode that temporarily mutes notifications.

We show you how to disable and enable settings and the control panel in Windows 10, both via Group Policy and the registry.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

Over the past few years, Microsoft has been slowly copying options from the legacy Control Panel in Windows 10 to its new Settings app. These days, almost everything you need can be found there, though there are a few select items that can only be adjusted via the old interface.

As a result, admins who are trying to restrict the ability of their users to cause problems with their operating system have to disable both. As such, Microsoft bundles the toggle for both together, letting users disable or enable settings and the control panel in Windows 10 in one fell swoop.

This tutorial will show you how to disable and enable settings or the control panel in Windows 10 for specific users. It can also be used globally restrict access to settings changes for non-trusted users on your system. As you’d expect, you’ll need to be logged in as an administrator to make these changes.

Infopackets Reader Debra P. writes:

Lately I have been inundated with Windows 10 popup notifications that come from websites I’ve visited previously. I also receive a lot of email alerts. The popups are coming from bottom right corner of my screen and I have no idea how to stop it. Can you please tell me how to disable all Windows 10 notifications? “

I asked Debra if she would like me to connect with her using my remote desktop support service in order to have a closer look, and she agreed.

Below I will discuss my findings.

How to Fix: Disable All Windows 10 Notifications (or a few)

First, let’s talk about why the notifications are appearing and how to limit or prevent it from happening.

The notifications are actually coming from apps or programs that are installed on the system, then those notifications are redirected through the “Windows 10 Action Center.” The Action Center is in the lower right corner of the task bar near the clock and look like a speech balloon (pic). Microsoft made the Action Center as a way to streamline and centralize alerts from programs, apps, and even Windows 10 itself.

By default, the Action Center will display all notifications that are sent to it. However, it can also be configured to display notifications from only a few apps, or all notifications can be disabled entirely.

Option #1: Disable All Windows 10 Notifications

By far the quickest and easiest way to disable all Windows 10 notifications is to flick a single switch off in the Windows 10 Settings (described below).

This comes with major caveats, however, as silencing everything at once may prevent an important alert from appearing – such as a calendar reminder, for example. If this won’t fit your needs, then scroll down to the next major heading entitled “Disable Notifications Individually by App or Program”.

If you wish to disable all Windows 10 notifications, do the following:

  1. Click Start, then click Settings (the cogwheel icon). The “Windows Settings” page will be displayed. At the top there is a text field. Type in “Notifications” (no quotes). Below that, click the option “Notifications & actions settings”.
  2. The “Notifications & Actions” window will appear. Ensure that “Get notifications from apps and other senders” is turned off.

Disable Notifications Individually by App or Program

If you need some important notifications appearing but are inundated by others, you will need to investigate which app or program is sending too many notifications, then choose a method to disable the notifications.

There are two ways to disable Windows 10 notifications:

If it’s a Microsoft Store app, use the Windows 10 “Notifications & Actions” in the Settings to disable notifications.

To do so: click Start, then click Settings (the cogwheel icon). The “Windows Settings” page will be displayed. At the top there is a text field. Type in “Notifications” (no quotes). Below that, click the option “Notifications & actions settings”. The “Notifications & Actions” window will appear. Under the heading “Get notifications from these senders”, choose which apps you want to receive alerts from. You may also wish to disable the “Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows” option to disable Microsoft promotions.

  • You can also disable or modify the notifications through the app or program itself. In this case, you need to open the app or program to see what notification settings are available.
  • Let’s look at some examples.

Example #1: Disable Chrome Notifications in Windows 10

Google Chrome is a considered a “program” and not an app. Therefore app notifications can only be managed through the program itself.

In Debra’s case, she uses Google Chrome to browse the Internet. Sometimes when she visits a website (such as ZDNet.com, for example), it will prompt with a message “[This website] wants to show notifications” then gives the option to “Allow or block” (pic).

Depending on the frequency of articles being published on that site, the alerts can pile up quickly through the Windows 10 Action Center. This is especially since Debra also allowed a bunch of other websites to send notifications.

To disable Chrome notifications in Windows 10, Chrome needs to be modified to only allow certain sites to send notifications (the less annoying ones, for example), or shut the notifications off entirely.

    1. Open Chrome; at the top right click three dots, then click the “Settings” option.
    2. At the bottom, click Advanced. Under “Privacy and security,” click Site settings, then click “Notifications.”
    3. At this point you can choose to block all, block a site, or allow a site.

Example #2: Disable Windows Mail Notifications in Windows 10

Windows Mail is considered an “app” and comes pre-bundled with Windows 10. Because it’s an app, notifications can be managed one or two different ways (but this also depends on the app). In this case, Windows Mail has two methods.

To prevent Windows Mail from sending too many notifications, do the following:

    1. To do modify the notification settings in the Windows Mail app: open the Mail app, then select the “Settings” option in the left hand corner. Next, select “Notifications” then choose the account you want to disable notifications.
    2. Another way to do this is with the Windows 10 Settings. To do so: click Start, then access “Settings”, then navigate to “Notifications & Actions” (as described previously) to shut off notifications.

    I hope that helps.

I need more questions. If you have a question – or even a computer problem that needs fixing – please email me with your question so that I can write more articles like this one. I can’t promise I’ll respond to all the messages I receive (depending on the volume), but I’ll do my best.

Microsoft’s new Windows 10 is a new and improved take on the long running operating system by its designers, which fits well as a whole package according to initial consumer reports.

Microsoft introduced small and subtle but numerous changes to the operating system with its Windows 10.

One of these new and subtle changes was the ability of applications to send users notifications which could be visible in the start menu, the Action center or even with a banner just above the task bar in the lower right corner.

Why would i need notifications on Windows?

With previous versions of windows many users are used to keeping a clean and intrusion free look of their windows , so the notifications are sure to meet with some criticism, but they sometimes are too useful to be ignored. For example if you are tracking a certain activity via an application on your Windows 10, if the Application has the ability to send notifications, you will keep getting regular notifications with regular updates of the activity while you carry on with your work normally.

You won’t have to open the browser again and again to check your email. If you have your email configured, you will get a notification as soon as you get a new email, provided you are connected to a network.

Thus having Notifications with your new Windows 10 can be useful and very handy.

On the other hand, as the reputation of notifications go, you are likely to be disturbed and find one or two application intrusive with the notifications, or you might just want to turn notifications of all together, Windows 10 allows you to do so.

This is how you do so-

How do you disable/hide notifications in Windows 10?

1- Click on the start menu.

2- Select settings and open the settings window.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

3- Once the window opens, select System.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

4- Once you select System, in the left pane, find Notifications and Actions.

5- Under the Notifications heading, toggle the option that says -App Notifications.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

This will disable all Application Notifications for Windows.

Note that, this is applicable if show app notifications is enabled, then you can choose to individually disable apps based on your need. But if show app notifications is turned off, it does not matter whether you turn these settings off or on.

To disable Notifications for individual Applications, you will have to individually disable them.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

To explain the procedure more simply and to make it more easy lets take the example of the Mail application.

Option is given in each app also to mute notifications and you can turn them off from opening the app also.

    For example -Mail app.

    1- Open the mail app.

2- In the bottom left corner, Select settings.

3- In the now visible settings menu, select Options.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

4- Start scrolling down until you see the Notifications header.

5- Toggle the option that says -show in Action Center to turn off notifications for that particular app.

How to disable notifications on windows 10

You have now disabled Notifications for the Mail application.

Note: Below the -Show in Action Center toggle, are options to disable sound and notification banners. If you are annoyed by any particular aspect of the notification, you can try and disable that too.

Do you want to know how to disable persistent notifications popping up on your Windows 10 PC.? In this guide, I will explain to you how to do it. Notifications are important to stay aware of the various events on your computer. It may be an alert about system updates, app updates, suspicious app, or similar such things. Sometimes, you also get notified about things that are not that important. I hate it when constantly notifications are showing up on my computer screen while I’m working.

Windows OS comes with its settings to help you put a stop to incoming notifications. You can entirely disable notifications for the whole system. At the same time, you may also disable notifications individually for any app that is sending unnecessary alerts. Let’s check out how to do it.

    Table of Contents

Disable Notifications in Windows 10 Computer

You have to tweak the system settings for your computer to change the notification preferences or entirely disable it on your device.

How to Disable Notification for the Whole System?

    • Press Windows + I hotkey to launch the Settings section
    • Click on System
    • Then on the left-hand panel click on Notifications & Actions
    • In the middle of the screen, there will be an option Get Notifications from Apps and other senders
    • That option is set to On that’s why you are receiving notifications 24 X 7
How to disable notifications on windows 10
    • Click on the toggle to turn that option off

That’s it. From now on, you will not

    • receive notifications on the lock screen,
    • hear notification sounds,
    • get reminders,
    • receive notifications of VoIP calls.

However, you will still get suggestions, tips, and tricks for improving your Windows OS user experience. Also, you will get suggestions for certain app installations and setups. Windows will keep showing you the latest features and updates that you may install on your computer.

Disable Notifications for Individual Apps Installed on Your PC

If you are selective regarding allowing certain apps to send you notifications, you can set that as well.

    • Then navigate down to Get notifications from these senders
How to disable notifications on windows 10

Disable Notifications Temporarily on Windows 10 Using Focus Assist

Windows 10 has this feature called Focus Assist which when enabled will stop showing incoming notifications for a fixed period of time. Let’s say you’re at home back from the office and you do not wish to receive notifications on your laptop till the next morning, then you can set a time frame. Within this time frame, Focus Assist will be active and you won’t see any notifications on your PC.

    To enable Focus Assist

    • Click on the Notification Center button at the extreme bottom right corner of your Windows desktop screen
    • Then you will see a lot of tiles for various functions
    • Look for Focus Assist tile [the one with a crescent moon symbol]
    • Click on it to enable
How to disable notifications on windows 10
    • You will see it will display something as Priority Only
    • Priority Only means while Focus Assist is on you will receive notifications from the apps that you have prioritized
    • Again, click on the Focus Assist Tile to change it to Alarms Only.
    • The above option will temporarily disable all notifications except the alarms you have set. This is the option I recommend to set up while you enable Focus Assist on your PC.

Set Priority List of Apps for Focus Assist

You can also enable Focus Assist and tweak its settings by going to the System settings of your computer. This one is for the option Priority Only where you can set which apps can send you notifications.

    • Click on Windows + I to go to Settings
    • then click on System
    • on the left-hand panel click on Focus Assist
    • Then click on Priority Only
How to disable notifications on windows 10
    • Under that click on Customize your priority list
    • As you can see from my screenshot I have only prioritized the VoIP calls and unchecked app reminders and notifications from Pinned contacts on Taskbar.
How to disable notifications on windows 10
    • You can set these options as per your requirement
    • Navigate down to the Apps section. Here you can set which apps can send you a notification
    • Be default only Xbox components, nearby sharing, and Snip & Sketch can send you notifications. This you can even remove. Simply click on the App in the exception list and click Remove
How to disable notifications on windows 10
    • I recommend not to add any app to the list because you want no notifications for a temporary period and whitelisting apps will entirely oppose the idea of Focus Assist
    • Still, if you want to add apps into the exception list and wish to see notifications from these apps, click on Add an App
    • Then add your choice of app

    Conclusion

So, if notifications are bothering you a lot on your Windows 10 computer, then disable these notifications or prioritize which apps can send you notifications. This way you won’t be distracted from your work or when you are enjoying your off-time. I hope this guide was helpful to you.

Notifications in Windows 10 can be very useful & annoying at the same time. They prompt warnings of upcoming events like new emails which arrive, appointments in the calendar, and even alert us when our Windows systems need maintenance or application action. But, receiving a barrage of Notifications isn’t always welcomed as they can be distracting and can in the way of what you want to do. But, you can disable all notifications with a click-switch.

You have to tweak the system settings for your computer to change the notification preferences or entirely disable it on your device.

    • Click on the toggle to turn that option off

That’s it. From now on, you will not

    • receive notifications on the lock screen,
    • hear notification sounds,
