Every time I login into my desktop, pidgin start behind, and sometimes it’s annoying me – e.g. when I’m not connected to Internet or when I don’t want to be on-line – I check startup application list and there’s no pidgin listed.

assume that you’re using MusicTracker plug-in, your status is Busy and you’re chatting with someone. when music change, status will change, and then buddy-list will disappear and chat window will minimize. Buddy-list is not important but minimizing chat window when you’re chatting is annoying, Is there any way to make pidgin stop that?

- Close all running applications then go to System → Preferences → Startup Applications.
- Click on the Options tab, check Automatically remember running applications when logging out.
- Close and reboot.
NOTE:
- If you want your windows to stop minimizing when your away status changes, then Goto Tools → Plugins and then uncheck Iconify on Away plugin.
- Alternatively you could stop using musictracker so your status stops periodically changing.
When I started using Ubuntu at my workplace, after few days I tried Pidgin. Undoubtedly, it is a nice application to chat with your buddies, but I was irritated with its unwanted (for me) notifications. So I tried to drill down and get rid of them.
The notification was waste for me, because even if I would click on a friend appearing online, the chat window won’t open for me. So to get rid of it, I tried my luck under Tools > Preferences but couldn’t get anything to disable these notifications. Later I discovered that is is actually one of the third party plugins, called Libnotify popups,which is notifying so it was time to configure it so these notifications can be disabled.

Disable or configure notifications
The “Libnotify popups” plugin provides configuring it. So to open its configuration goto Tools > Plugins (ctrl + u). Scroll down and select the “Libnotify popups” plugin and click on configure. It will open another window, which will allow you to check and uncheck the types of notifications you want to show/hide (notice the image below).
When done, click on ok to save the settings. This way you can stop those annoying notifications.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS was released recently and I quickly installed and began doing some testing… and the steps below is how I disable and enable desktop notifications…
Ubuntu notifications are there to get your attention, notify you of events and display popup messages at the top of your screen. When you get a new chat message or email you will get a notification informing you.
Simply close a notification without selecting it to dismiss it from your screen. These messages will minimize to the system tray for quick access when you need them. The message tray gives you quick access to your notification when it’s convenient for you.
When you click the clock on the top menu or press Superkey + M on your keyboard, the message tray will become available again with all your notifications.
This brief tutorial is going to show students and new users how to disable or re-enable Ubuntu 18.04 notifications.
If you’re working on something and you do not want to be bothered, you can temporarily switch off the Ubuntu notifications. This will disable all messages from popping up when they arrive at the top of your screen.
When notifications are disabled, messages will still be available on the message tray… you can quickly access them by pressing the Superkey + M on your keyboard…
Disabling Ubuntu Notifications
To disable Ubuntu 18.04 notifications, open the Activities overview and start typing notifications

Click on Notifications to open the panel.
Switch the toggle to OFF .
Doing that will disable notifications on Ubuntu 18.04 desktops
Then switch off the popup notifications as shown below. You may also want to disable the lock screen notifications as well.
When switched off, most notifications will not pop up at the top of the screen. Notifications will still be available in the message tray when you display it (by clicking on the clock, or by pressing Superkey + M and they will start popping up again when you switch the toggle to ON again.
You can also disable or re-enable notifications for individual applications from the Notifications panel.
How do I turn off all presence notifications ubuntu pidgin 2.5.5?
I right-clicked “cancel presence notification” but that is only for one user, and it doesn’t persist.

Presence notifications are the way that other users see your status (e.g. Online, Offline, Away) using the XMPP/Jabber protocol. Pidgin’s behavior (only canceling the presence notification for the selected user) seems to make sense. Similarly, the Unsubscribe option on the same menu will stop you from being able to see their status.
However, since you tagged this question with Ubuntu, you may be talking about the notifications that pop up when users sign on, sign off, or send messages to you. These notifications are controlled through the Libnotify Popups plugin. To change these settings, go to Tools > Plugins, highlight Libnotify Popups, and click Configure Plugin. These settings should persist.

With Automatic login feature enabled, a user can log in without password at the end of boot process. Conversely, we can make a user to authenticate himself/herself by disabling the feature. In this article, we would focus on how to enable or disable automatic login in Ubuntu 20.04 release.
At the end of boot process, we are provided with either a default shell or a display manager. This depends on our Ubuntu configuration. This article basically deals with display manager, a GUI login manager.
First, we need to identify the default display manager for our Ubuntu distribution. Thereafter, we would make necessary changes to get things done. We have discussed three display managers – LightDM, GDM and SDDM.
Note: Following operations would require you to have superuser privileges. In case you don’t have one, then contact your System Administrator for assistance.
Identify default display manager
We can identify our default display manager using two methods –
- Open a terminal and issue the following –
This will return any of the three –
If its LightDM –
GDM3 –
and, for SDDM –
Once we have identified our default display manager, make changes to relevant configuration files accordingly.
Enable or Disable automatic login for LightDM
To enable automatic login – open a terminal and use any text editor for configuration file – lightdm.conf
We have used nano text editor. If the configuration file already exists then edit it. Otherwise, create a new configuration file – lightdm.conf.
and, append the file with –
To disable automatic login – find the above entries in the file and add # at the beginning
Enable or Disable automatic login for GDM3
To enable automatic login – open a terminal and use any text editor for configuration file – custom.conf
We have used nano text editor. If the configuration file already exists then edit it. Otherwise, create a new configuration file – custom.conf.
and, append the file with –
To disable automatic login – find the above entries in the file and add # at the beginning
Enable or Disable automatic login for SDDM
To enable automatic login – open a terminal and use any text editor for configuration file – autologin.conf
We have used nano text editor. If the configuration file already exists then edit it. Otherwise, create a new configuration file – autologin.conf.

To disable automatic login – find the above entries in the file and add # at the beginning

Notifications on Ubuntu are designed to catch your attention while you are busy in some other task. You can open the Terminal either through the system Dash or the Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut.
Please enter the password for sudo in case you are asked to do so as only an authorized user can install/uninstall and configure software on Ubuntu.
You can launch the Dconf Editor through the GUI by searching for it through the system Dash:

The dconf Editor will launch, displaying the following message:
The message means that you need to be very careful while performing system configurations as it might mess up with sensitive settings and break down your system. After clicking the “I’ll be careful” button, search for “notifications” through the search button. This will display the following results:
Click on the /org/gnome/desktop/notifications folder. This will open the following view:
Try to locate the “show-in-lock-screen” slider button as shown above. This button is turned on by default which means that notifications are enabled to be displayed on your lock screen. Turn the button off and close the Dconf Editor; no more notifications will be displayed for you when you are (or aren’t) on your Ubuntu’s lock screen.
Although Dconf Editor is a very useful tool for editing system configurations, you can uninstall it through the following command whenever you need to:
