How to get started with audible and audiobooks

Audiobooks—or books on tape—have been around for decades but they’re booming in popularity now that they no longer take up a dozen CDs and the cost has plummeted. Let’s look at how to get started.

I’m a huge fan of audiobooks. I find they’re the best way to fill dead time when you’re driving, cleaning, cooking, taking your dog for a walk, or otherwise doing pretty mindless tasks. If you spend a couple of hours sitting in the car alone commuting, then you should really check them out.

Where Can You Get Audiobooks?

Audible

Audible is our go-to audiobook service here at How-To Geek. While you can buy audiobooks there, if you start listening to audiobooks regularly you’ll want to sign up for their subscription service. For $14.95 per month you get one credit which can be used to buy any book, regardless of price. For $22.95 per month, you get two credits. Your first book is also free when you sign up so you can check it out before paying any money.

How to get started with audible and audiobooks

The best thing about Audible is the fixed price. You only pay $14.95 for every book. While you can occasionally find other books cheaper on other services, audiobooks tend to be quite pricey and often retail for around $30. Even when other marketplaces have secured a discount from the retail price, they tend to cost $14.95—curiously, identical to the price of an Audible credit.

The Other Options

Audible isn’t the only game in town, it’s just the most popular. Both iTunes and the Google Play store have large collections available.

If you’re looking for the easiest way to buy just a single audiobook, then iTunes is your best option if you use iOS and Google Play is your best option if you use Android. You already have an account and the apps are built into your smartphone.

There’s also a good chance your local library will have audiobooks, as well as ebooks, available for you to check out. The selection won’t be as good as any of the online stores and you may have to wait for a title you’re looking for to become available, but it is free.

How to Listen to Audiobooks

The simplest way to listen to audiobooks is using the app on your smartphone or tablet. Any books you buy from Audible appear in the Audible app available on iOS and Android. Books you buy through iTunes are available to listen to through the iBooks app. Books from the Google Play store are available in the Google Play Books app on Android and also iOS. Just put in a pair of headphones, press play, and enjoy.

How to get started with audible and audiobooks

Playing over smart speakers is also possible. You can listen to Audible books using your Amazon Echo or Sonos speakers, and you can listen to Google Play audiobooks on a Google Home device. Your place will automatically get synced between your smartphone and your smart speaker.

All the services also let you download mp3 files so you can play your audiobooks anywhere, or even burn them to CDs if that’s your thing. If you’ve got an old iPod lying around somewhere, you can turn it into a dedicated audiobook player.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Audible and Audiobooks

Audiobooks take a little bit of getting used to. It can be strange having someone read to you rather than listening to music or talkshows on the radio. Here are some tips to get the most out of it:

The narrator makes or breaks an audiobook. Even your favorite book will seem awful if it’s read by someone who’s voice you can’t stand. Listen to the samples and check out the reviews on each store before buying, just in case the narrator sounds like Gilbert Gottfried on helium.

How to get started with audible and audiobooks

If you’re just starting out with audiobooks, try listening to some read by the original author. That way, you know you’re getting the authentic experience rather than the take of some producer in an office building.

How to get started with audible and audiobooks

There are two kinds of audiobooks: abridged and unabridged. Abridged audiobooks were more common when tapes and CDs were used, but they still exist. If you want the full written text, make sure you go with the unabridged version.

Audible has a great return policy. If you don’t like a book, you can return it at any stage within a year of buying it. Don’t be afraid to use it if you don’t enjoy a book or if the narrator annoys you too much.

Because of Apple’s rules, Amazon can’t easily sell audiobooks through the Audible app on iOS devices. To buy audiobooks from your iPhone, you need to use Safari. The same is also true for Google Play books.

If you find the narrator a bit slow, don’t be afraid to use the “Speed Up” options. I often listen to audiobooks at 1.25x or 1.5x speed. I’ve even gone as far as 2x for some particularly slow narrators.

I have literally listened to thousands of hours of audiobooks. I’ve listened to an average of around three hours a day for more than the last decade. I’m not sure how I’d stay sane while cleaning without them. Check out Audible you won’t be disappointed.

Some people love to read. But some people are also very busy. If you fall into both of those categories, audiobooks are just what the doctor ordered. Audiobooks let you read by listening to someone else read you the book, usually via your phone, tablet, or computer, meaning you can dive into a novel while you’re on the train, driving to work, or even while you’re exercising.

If audiobooks sound like a match for you, one of the best places to start is with a subscription to Audible. What is Audible, and how does Audible work? Read on, and we’ll give you the lowdown.

What is Audible?

Audible bills itself as “the world’s largest selection of audiobooks and original ad-free shows.” So basically, imagine stepping into a massive digital library with hundreds of thousands of books and other content—more than 425,000 titles to be exact. And while you’re there you can listen to almost anything your heart desires, from the latest autobiography to that classic novel you always meant to get around to reading.

Audible also makes its own original content, with shows specially tailored for the format. Each month, Audible releases six new pieces of original content that you can only find on Audible, ranging from plays performed in a studio to talks given by the present day’s brightest thinkers.

Ok, so how do you buy Audible books?

Every month that you’re a Audible subscriber, you get credit to choose one audiobook . Once you’re logged in, you can browse by categories like “mysteries & thrillers,” “self development,” and “Best of 2018” (do this via the “browse” tab at the top). Or you can search for a specific title (via the search bar in the top-right corner).

Hover your cursor over a title, and the following information will pop up:

  1. The author (say, Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown, or tidying-up expert Marie Kondo)
  2. Who’s narrating the book (ooh, we hope it’s LeVar Burton!)
  3. How long the book will take to listen to (could be anything from 30 minutes to 100 hours!)
  4. The book’s average rating (out of 5 stars) from Audible listeners

Find something you like? Click “add to cart,” then click the shopping cart in the top-right corner. You’ll go through a checkout process (the book will be free if you have a credit to use)!

Ok, I got it! Now, how do you listen to books on Audible?

That’s the beauty of it: you can listen on iOS and Android devices, and even on Amazon Kindle, Alexa-supported devices, and Fire TV.

To listen to your audiobook, you’ll need to download the Audible app to your device. (See all of the available devices and how to download their respective apps here ).

Once you’ve opened your app on a smartphone, the book you purchased will pop up. Click on it to download the book, and you’ll be all set to start listening! Since you’ve downloaded it, you can even listen while you’re offline. Score!

Have you ever wondered how to return a book on Audible? Or if it’s even possible? If you answered yes, you’re not alone. Some audiobooks just aren’t going to jive with certain people. Be it the narrator’s voice, the pacing, or the fact that the content isn’t what you expected, many audiobook listeners at some point experience buyer’s remorse.

Luckily, if you do most of your audiobook buying on Audible, there’s an easy solution to this problem. They’ve got a fairly straightforward return process so you don’t have to waste credits on books you’re never going to finish listening to.

Allow me, a quasi-expert who has done this once or twice, to walk you through the process of how to return an audiobook on Audible.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, a few notes: Audible customers can return only a set number of books, so make sure you use this process sparingly. You can also only return books within 12 months of purchase.

How to return a book on Audible

Okay, here’s how to get your money and/or credits back if you’re really wishing you’d picked a different audiobook:

  1. First, you need to use the desktop Audible.com site, since you can’t make returns on the mobile site or in the app.
  2. Make sure you’re logged into your Audible account, then navigate to your Account Details page. You can do this by hovering over where it says “Hi, [your name]!” at the top of the screen, which should reveal a dropdown list of options. How to get started with audible and audiobooks
  3. Depending on how recently you’ve logged into your Amazon account, you may be prompted to enter your Amazon/Audible password. If so, enter your password at this point.
  4. On the lefthand side of the page, under “Your Account,” there will be a “Purchase History” option. Click on that. How to get started with audible and audiobooks
  5. From here, you’ll be able to view your orders. Find the one that includes the book you want to return. There should be a nice little button that says “return” right over the photo of the audiobook, which you’ll want to click on. How to get started with audible and audiobooks

But before downloading audio books from Audible for syncing to iPod, it’s important to be noted that most iPod models can support for different audio formats with the limitation of an audio file size.

Let’s check the compatible audio formats out according to different iPod model and generation. In general, iPod Nano can work well with Audible format 2, 3, and 4, while the iPod Shuffle is compatible with the Audible format 2 and 3. Besides audio formats, the premise is that the audile file size allows. As consequence, you’d better to download or cut audiobooks, which are longer than 20+ hours in smaller segments by splitting Audible books by chapters before loading them to iPod Nano and Shuffle.

If you are using an iPod Touch, congratulations, you don’t need to worry about restrictions what we mentioned above. There is an Audible for iOS app coming to iPod Touch by default. That’s to say, iPod Touch works well with any kind of Audible formats, including AA and AAX audio files.

Part 2. How to Use Audible AA/AAX Books on iPod Touch

As Audible app is available for iOS devices officially, like iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad, there is an official way to get Audible books available on Nano mode. Part 3. How to Transfer Audible Books to iPod Shuffle/Nano with iTunes

Since there is no official app for Audible on other iPod modes, you need to get help from iTunes software for transferring audiobooks to iPod Nano and Shuffle. Before get started to follow the below guide, please make sure you have downloaded right book format with right file size for Nano and Shuffle. And as for Windows users, you need to create a new Audible playlist and sync Audible files to iTunes.

Part 4. How to Put Audible Books to Any iPod without Limit

Now, you will be able to listen to Audible books on popular iPod generations. But they, except iPod Touch come with a lot of limitations to prevent from syncing audiobooks. You can’t take control of how long audiobooks are and what format they are encoded. What’s more, how about you are possessing an older iPod device, like iPod Classic?

To unlock all limits, here, we will introduce another professional and effective way to help you play Audible AA/AAX books on all iPod devices without problem. It is to use an audio converter for Audible, called AudFree Audible Book Converter to convert protected AA/AAX files to any iPod supported audio files, like MP3 while splitting Audible books by chapters for getting smaller segments.

Step 1. Please click the first ‘Add Files’ button at the bottom-left corner to select audio files from iTunes library and add them to AudFree software. Alternatively, you can drag and drop them to the main conversion window directly.

Step 2. Now, you can start to click the ‘audio’ format icon to open setting window, in which you can define output format as iPod compatible files, like MP3 and split audio files by chapters or times according to your needs.

Step 3. When all settings are done, you just need to simply press the ‘Convert’ button to extract MP3 audiobooks from Audible AA/AAX files.

Once all added audio books are converted completely, you can click the ‘file’ button to locate them in destination folder on your computer and put converted Audible books on all iPod modes, like iPod Touch, Nano, Shuffle as well as Classic just like syncing common MP3 files to iPod for playback.

Some people love to read. But some people are also very busy. If you fall into both of those categories, audiobooks are just what the doctor ordered.
