Notes

The Reindeer Candy Cane Holder is worked in continuous rounds. You do not need to slip stitch to join but you will find it helpful to mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker (or safety pin, extra piece of yarn, etc.).

I’ve included the pattern again with photo tutorial support at the end of the post! The shortened version is at the top for those who do not need the photos!

Last Minute Reindeer Ornament Crochet Pattern Instructions

REINDEER BODY

R2: 1 sc in each st around [10]

R10: 1 sc through the first st and the 5th stitch (this creates a centre to the reindeer to hold the 2 candy canes more securely – see image for help in the tutorial section at the end of the post). 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. Sk the next st (which is the one you already crocheted through with the first stitch). 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. [9]

R11: Switch to your 4 mm crochet hook and work 1 sc in each st around. Finish off with an invisible join and weave in your ends. [9]

Now here comes the fun part – because you can choose how to embellish your reindeer 🙂

Option 1 – Felt nose. Cut a square measuring 1 inch by 1 inch. Trim the corners to round them slightly. Stick on your reindeer – if you want to you could use black felt instead of red.

Option 2 – Red Pompom. I used a 0.375-0.5 inch size red pompom for Reindeer #2.

Option 3 – Button – Red or Black.

Option 1 – 1/2 inch Wiggly Eyes

Option 2 – 1 cm Wiggly Eyes

Option 3 – 1/2 inch buttons

Tie a ribbon, or piece of thread to the center stitch inside the reindeer (the one you created when you worked through the first and fifth stitch in R10). Then loop it through the front and back of the reindeer so the holder will balance when you hang it from the tree.

I used to make these Reindeer Candy Cane Holders out of paper and pompoms when I was a kid. I thought a crochet version might be pretty cool.
They work up super quick, and use hardly any yarn.

This pattern is written using US terminology.

  • Worsted weight yarn (medium 4) – I used 7g (.25 oz) of Loops & Threads, Impeccable in Chocolate for the darker reindeer, and Loops & Threads, Impeccable in Soft Taupe for the lighter guy
    • 1 g (.04 oz) of Patons, Canadiana in Cardinal for the nose
    • Less than .5 g (.02 oz) of Red Heart, Super Saver in Black for the pupils
    • 2 g (.07 oz) of Loops & Threads, Impeccable in Aran for the eyes
  • 4mm hook
  • Fiberfill, for stuffing his nose
  • Doll making needle (or whatever needle you like to sew your pieces together extra firm.

Gauge is not important for this pattern. Just make sure it fits around your candy canes, and that your stitches are tight enough that the stuffing doesn’t show through on his nose.

    R- round or row
    St(s)- stitch or stitches
    FO- Finish off
    Ch- chain
    Sl st- slip stitch
    Ea- each
    MC- magic circle
    Sc- single crochet
    Sc2tog- single crochet two together
    BLO- back loop only

    • When sewing on pieces, be mindful not to catch the fibers on the opposite side of your pocket. You want to be able to put your candy canes inside.

Every year I say I am going to get around to making my own stocking holders. I already knew what I wanted them to look like in my head. Glorious, stained wood holders (no surprise there right?) with just the right amount of sparkle, thanks to some reindeer head ornaments. The problem was, I could never ever find the ornaments. Until this year!

So, I finally got around to my DIY Wooden Reindeer Stocking Holders, with a little help from Big Lots! Here’s how to make your own.
How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

    Supplies:

    • Reindeer Head Ornaments from Big Lots (red, blue, silver or gold)
    • 2×6 (length dependent on number of holders – approx 1′ per holder)
    • Wood glue
    • Stain
    • Old cloth or brush (for stain)
    • Saw (or have the lengths cut in-store)
    • Hot glue
    • Drill
    • Drill bit for wooden hanger

    Optional:

    • Screws
    • Countersink bit

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderTypically 2×6 boards will come in 8 ft lengths. This would make 8 stocking holders since each stocking holder uses 10″ of board, total.

You will cut two, 5″ pieces for each holder. Attach them using glue and/or screws. If using screws countersinking them will keep the screw heads from scratching your mantel or other surface.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to attach the top board a 1/2″ from the back, off-set (as pictured). I wish I could explain the physics behind this but just know I tested it (with my head, on accident) by trying to line the back up into an L-shape and that did NOT work. So don’t make that same mistake. It hurts and your stocking, once filled, will fall.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderAgain, if you choose to use screws it is wise to countersink. If you don’t want to bother with screw you should be fine to just use wood glue but I would recommend making sure you have something to keep the pieces in place as they dry because they will shift. And again, your stocking will fall.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderOnce your pieces have dried it is time to pre-drill a hole for the actual holder.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderThe size of your drill bit (to pre-drill the hole) will depend on the size of the finial that you’re using. The good news is, it’s printed right on the front of the package for you. Easy peasy!

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderAdd a tiny dab of glue into the hole. Not too much! Excess glue oozing out will mean that your stain won’t take evenly. Push your finial into the hole, it should fit fairly snug. Not too tight, not too loose.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderOnce that’s had time to dry thoroughly apply the stain of your choice (I used Dark Walnut) and allow to dry.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderThat brings us to the fun part! When I first saw these at Big Lots I nearly cried tears of joy! I had literally looked for some just like them for years.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Initially I had envision using gold but then I saw the red and I just went all melty inside…

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

You can choose from red, blue, silver, gold and even white. This beautifully made and oh so trendy set of reindeer was around $6! Aren’t they gorgeous?

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderAttaching these beautiful ornaments is the easiest thing you’ll do! Add a dab of hot glue to entire back potion of the ornament careful not to put too much. You don’t want it oozing out. That won’t be cute.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderLet it dry.

But, hey, it’s hot glue! That only takes a minute and then you’re all set to use your pretty, new stocking holders that you made all by yourself!

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

    BAM! It feels good right!

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderSomeone else has already done the hard crash test dummy work for you…

How to Make a Reindeer Candy HolderAll you gotta do is sit back, look cool…

It is about that time of the year again! It’s time for crafts for holiday school parties! If you want something fun and affordable to make, then candy cane reindeer are the answer!

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Most of the candy cane reindeer tutorials are made with just one candy cane. This fun craft idea makes them with two! Because they are larger, they are perfect to decorate your tree or even add to a package for a special touch.

You can use traditional red and white candy canes to make yours. Or, you can try some of the fun colors for a unique touch. Just imagine the rainbow of colored reindeer you can have adorning your tree. Simply follow the simple candy cane reindeer instructions below to make these this year.

    Other fun holiday craft ideas:

    SUPPLIES

    Brown felt
    Candy canes
    Googly eyes
    Red sparkly pom-poms
    Hot glue gun

    INSTRUCTIONS

Cut brown felt into strips around 2″ high and about 3″ long (make sure it is long enough to wrap around two candy canes). Then, glue two candy canes together, back to back. These are the antlers for your reindeer.

Next, wrap the felt around the candy canes, just under the curved part of the candy cane, and hot glue it to itself, making it fit snugly around the candy canes. The final step is to apply the eyes and red pom-pom nose.

You’ve just created a reindeer! Kids love this simple candy cane reindeer craft that you can do on a Saturday or even at your child’s school party. It is an affordable idea that is perfect for kids of all ages.

    Introduction: Candy Pooping Reindeer

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Instructables is truly one of the best places on earth: a community of people (and bots) so ingenious, curious, courageous, fun-loving, and adventurous.

One of the Instructables that embodies such spirits and made me feel utterly inspired is this one by fellow member Seamster / Sam: a wooden Pooping Reindeer Candy Dispenser.

As a total newbie, I did not even think about trying to recreate it: who has Sam’s crazy woodworking skills?

A couple of years went by, after tinkering with some paper crafts and kinetic mechanisms, I thought about making one using paper. When our dear friends announced they are coming to visit us with their two sons ( age 5 and 8) before the holidays, I finally got enough motivation to design and make one.

It worked! Check out the video above to see it in action!

    Step 1: Materials and Tools

The first half of the tutorial is fool-proof: we will make a reindeer from a Pringles Potato Crisps can or any paper tubes.

    You will also need:

    • some sturdy card stock
    • a big red pom pom
    • popsickle sticks
    • a craft saw to cut the paper tubes and popsickle sticks
    • hot glue sticks and a glue gun

In the second half we will turn it into a magical reindeer candy dispenser, with simple materials such as rubber bands, a few small pebbles and pop-sickle sticks!

Step 2: Make the Reindeer Body

To make the Reindeer, first cut the Pringles can into 2 parts, 4″ long for the head, and 6″ long for the body using a craft saw or box cutter.

Cut small openings for the neck and legs made of pop-sickle sticks. The size of these openings should be just big enough for the sticks to slide through. One opening each on the head and body for the neck, four openings on the body for the leg. The neck is made of 2 pieces of craft sticks to extend the length, and also to stop the head from sliding down. The piece on the head will be glued behind the piece coming from the body.

Test the Reindeer fitted together with pop-sickle sticks, mark where to trim off, and cut the pop-sickle sticks with a craft saw.

Note: the additional opening you see is where you will deposit candies.

Step 3: Make the Candy Pooping Mechanism

Print out the candy-pooping mechanism, cut, score and glue the pieces as shown. All the letters correspond to the numbers in pdf. ( Downloads at Step 5)

Here’s how it works: we put candies (sized for M&Ms) through the cut slot into the candy funnel (A) which holds about 30 M&Ms. The push stick (C) is glued to the neck (and head) and slide inside the candy chute (B) so
when we press on the Reindeer’s nose, it pushes 2-3 pieces of candies out. When we release the nose, the head bounces back (rubber band magic) and 2-3 pieces of candies comes down again from the funnel to the chute. The base (D) is to raise everything to the correct level.

Test and make sure the pieces fit and works before gluing everything permanently.

    Step 4: Glue and Assemble

We are almost done! Just need to make the head bounce back by adding rubber bands, attach them to a piece of craft stick glued to the front legs, and weave them behind the neck piece like shown.

To stabilize it, glue some pebbles to the interior, and cover with the finishing pieces (printable at the end) to keep the clean look and the mystery within!

    Step 5: Finishing Touches

    Who does not love Rudolph?

Piece #4 fits inside the lid that the can came with. Cut an opening to match where the candies come out, and we are done! Just add M&Ms! The funnel will hold about 20 to 30 pieces of candy.

Here are the downloads including the reindeer antlers, eyes, tail etc, and the candy pooping mechanism parts.

    Step 6: Sweet Success

Our friends told us that their sons love Skittles. Luckily this reindeer works beautifully with Skittles too.

We surprised the two children by asking them to touch the nose of this innocent looking reindeer, and out comes their favorite candy!

The reindeer took some work and some luck. The kids’ endless giggles and squeals as they walked away with their gift made it so worth it!

If you’re looking for easy and creative Christmas gift ideas then you may have just come to the right place! This Reindeer Christmas Mason Jar Gift is simple to make and can be easily customized. If you like this project you may also like these Elf Mason Jars.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

If you’re new here there’s a little bit of a tradition to share a Christmas themed mason jar gift each Holiday season (you can read the story of how I came up with this crazy idea HERE). It all began with a Santa Claus Mason Jar three years ago then continued with Snowmen and Elf Mason Jars.

Last year after I shared the idea for the Elf Mason jar I got a bunch of emails requesting a Reindeer (specifically Rudolph) Mason Jar to compliment the other “characters”. Because of that, this year I made a Christmas Mason jar Reindeer.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Let me say first, I KNOW that I am not the first one to get an idea to put pipe cleaners on a jar and call it a reindeer. I realize that the idea has been done before. However, I thought that I would put my own “spin” on the idea by creating a jar that coordinated with the jars from previous years.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Reindeer Christmas Mason Jar Gift Idea:

Just like in years past, I’ve created a custom gift tag for the jar. The tag this year even gives you a few ideas to personalize it a bit more!

Want to make one (or ten *wink*)? Here’s what you’ll need (contains affiliate links)

    Reindeer Mason Jar Supplies:

    • Mason Jars, I used Smooth Standard Mason Jars (not wide-mouth ones)
    • Brown Candy, I used Whoppers, you could also use Chocolate Covered Pretzels
    • 1″ Red Pom Pom
    • Small Red Pom Pom
    • Googly Eyes
    • Hot Glue & Gun
    • Brown Pipe Cleaners
    • Avery 22802 Tags (you print and punch out so easy!)
    • or White Cardstock
    • Merry & Bright Reindeer Tags

This year I’m trying something new with the tag downloads, last year I was answering a million (okay not really a million) emails on Christmas Eve of people who HAD to have the tags RIGHT THEN and wanted me to email them right away.

Or people emailed me saying they had the Snowman Tags and wanted the Elf tags, etc. Needless to say, it all got to be a bit overwhelming.

This download includes the Santa, Snowman, Elf and Reindeer tags along with MANY more that have never been offered here before.

    The Gift Tag Bundle Includes:

    • Snowman Gift Tags
    • Holly Jolly Christmas Gift Tags
    • Merry Christmas Tags
    • Elf Tags, Santa Tags
    • Round Tags
    • Reindeer Tags
    • Nail Polish Gift Tags

    Reindeer Mason Jar Assembly Instructions:

Okay, now that you have your supplies let’s make one!

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Step One: Create the Reindeer Antlers

First, twist your pipe cleaner into a circle. (make sure it fits around the mouth of your jar first)

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Add one pipe cleaner folded in half to each side of the circle.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Twist the pipe cleaner about ⅔ of the way to the end

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Cut one pipe cleaner into 4 pieces.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Twist one cut piece around the end of each pipe cleaner.

Step Two: Attach the Pipe Cleaner Antlers

After you’ve done that wrap the pipe cleaner antlers around your mason jar. Use hot-glue to get the antlers to stand up. Then use one more pipe cleaner around the entire thing to hide the hot glue marks.

Step Three: Add the Red Nose

Hot glue the 1″ pom-pom to the front of the jar.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

Step Four: Print out and Assemble the Gift Tag

Print out your tags and cut them out.

Using hot glue (and some tweezers to help you hold the eyes) glue two eyes and a small pom pom to the front of each tag. You can also glue ONLY the eyes or ONLY the nose if you like that better.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

1 Mark the location of the legs.

Find a toilet paper roll to make into the reindeer’s body.

Mark the location of the legs by drawing a pair of lines, each about ¼” from the end of the TP roll. The lines should span half of the TP roll’s circumference.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

2 Make a pair of slits.

Make a slit following each line.

How to Make a Reindeer Candy Holder

3 Create a pair of legs.

Create a pair of legs following these steps:

Make a circle by tracing one end of the TP roll onto cardboard.

Define the length of the legs by drawing a horizontal line below the circle. Draw a pair of vertical lines to mark the outer edges of the legs.

Draw another pair of lines between the first pair to define the inner edges of the legs.

    Cut out the entire piece.

    5 Apply glue.

Apply glue along the top curved edge of a pair of cardboard legs.

6 Attach a pair of legs to the TP roll.

Carefully insert the round section of the cardboard legs through one slit on the TP roll. Push it in until the curved edges are touching the inside walls of the TP roll.

7 Attach the second pair of legs.

Similarly glue the second pair of legs to the opposite slit on the TP roll.

With both pairs of legs in place, your TP reindeer should be able to stand upright. The holes on the TP roll are also nicely covered by the top section of the cardboard legs.

    8 Draw the reindeer’s head.

With the size of the TP roll body in mind, draw a reindeer’s head on cardboard or construction paper.

Start out with a basic shape like an oval or an upside down trapezoid. Draw a pair of ears on top and a pair of branching antlers in between the ears.

    9 Attach the head.

Cut out the reindeer’s head. Glue it at the top edge of one TP roll end. White glue will do the job but will take some time to dry. For a quicker drying time, use a glue gun.

    10 Make a tail.

Create a tail by cutting out a a small triangle from cardboard or construction paper. Fold a small portion of the base to make a bottom tab.

Glue the tail’s bottom tab on the inside of the TP roll end opposite the head.

    11 Paint the reindeer.

Paint your reindeer once the glue dries. For an evenly-colored reindeer, it is good to paint with white paint as a first layer. Paint the entire reindeer with white acrylic paint.

Once the white paint dries, paint with the final colors of the reindeer. Paint the reindeer with brown acrylic or poster paint. Use a darker shade of brown to paint the antlers and hooves.

    12 Add the details.

After the paint dries, glue a pair of wiggle eyes and a pompom nose.

Add some fun details like a scarf or a hat. I made a scarf by tying a length of ribbon around my reindeer’s neck.

Gardeners will love these Christmas candle holders. The main part of the design is made by recycling old terracotta pots.

Candles have become a part of the Christmas holiday decor so it’s always fun to do another DIY project involving them. (See my easy DIY peppermint candle project here.)

Make Your Own Terracotta Pot Candle Holders

I love to recycle common household items into craft projects. Clay pots are a really fun item to upcycle. (See my clay pot love bug candy dish for another cute idea.)

To make these cute candle holders you will need the following supplies:

    • 6 clay pots (4 x 2″ and 2 x 3″)
    • 3 clay saucers (2 x 2″ and 1 x 3″)
    • Unfinished wood cut outs purchased from any large craft store. The ones shown here are a reindeer, candy canes and a Christmas tree, but any design that is the right size will do.
    • small piece of sand paper
    • a star stencil and stencil brush
    • Acrylic paints and paint brush
    • 2 small pillar candles to fit the holders
    • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • Clear silicone glue.

Wash your old pots and allow to dry.

Paint the outside of each 2 inch pot green. Paint the 3″ ones in a red color. The 3″ saucer will also be painted red both outside and inside but the smaller sauces will be painted green n the bottom and sides but red on the top inside area. Let dry and add another coat if the coverage is not even.

Meanwhile, Sand the edges of your cut outs. Paint as desired and allow to dry.

Turn one large and two small pots upside down. Glue the remaining pots on top with clear silicone glue. Add a small amount of the silicone glue inside the top opening being careful not to get it on the outside, since it cannot be painted.

When completely dry, use your star stencil and stencil brush with gold paint to add stars at random around the outside and rims of the pots.

Attach your wood cut outs to the front of your planters with a hot glue gun, and place the small pillar candles inside the top saucer. Light and enjoy.

This idea is shared from an old issue of Crafting Traditions, which is no longer in print.
