Photoshop is a popular and powerful graphics editing tool, but what do you do if you need to open a PSD file and don’t have Photoshop? We have several solutions for you that don’t involve buying (or renting) an expensive copy of Photoshop.

A Photoshop Document (PSD) file is an entirely editable file format that saves the exact state of a document—text, shapes, layers, masks, effects, and all. While a standard image file is generally quite small, contains a flat image, and is single layered, a Photoshop document can be quite large, holds a lot of information, and is usually multi-layered. Most of the time, people will use the PSD format while working on a file and then export it to another type of image file for sharing.

We’re going to take a look at three possible solutions for how you can use a PSD file without having Photoshop—all of them free. However, if you regularly get PSD files to work on, or if you have a bunch you need to work on for a short time, you might want to consider a short-term subscription to Photoshop, which you can get for as little as $10 per month.

That said, let’s take a look at how you can work with these files without having Photoshop.

IrfanView: For Viewing and Converting PSD Files (Windows Only)

IrfanView is first and foremost an image viewer, and it’s a great one. It’s fast, lightweight, and can open just about every image format in existence (even a lot of audio and video formats). And best of all, it’s free. While you can’t edit any of the layers contained inside the file, you’re still able to view and convert the image into another format with relative ease.

Note: The bad news is that IrfanView is only available for Windows users. The good news is that if all you want to do is view a PSD file on your Mac, that’s built into macOS’ Preview function. Select the file in Finder and hit the Spacebar to view the top layer of the Photoshop file.

In IrfanView, open the “File” menu and then click the “Open” command.

Navigate to your PSD file, select it, and then click the “Open” button.

Now that you’ve opened your file, you can view or print it right in IrfanView. You can also convert it a different format if you need to.

Open the “File” menu again, and then click the “Save As” command.

In the Save As window, open the “Save As Type” drop-down menu and choose the format you want. You’ll find just about every type of image format you could want.

Your new image file will be saved to the folder where the original PSD file is located.

GIMP: For Viewing, Editing, and Converting PSD Files (Windows, macOS, Linux)

GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a free, open-source, and cross-platform image editing program that handles photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It’s a powerful app that, while not quite as intuitive or powerful as Photoshop, comes pretty close.

You can use Gimp to view and edit PSD files, as well as convert them to other formats.

Once you download and install GIMP, fire it up. Open the “File” menu, and then click the “Open” command.

Find the PSD file with which you want to work and then click the “Open” button.

Now that you’ve opened your file, you can start to retouch, edit, and create additional layers inside of GIMP. It isn’t the same as Photoshop, but it’s the closest you can get from free software.

Next, if you’re looking to convert this PSD file into something else—like a JPG, PNG, or GIF file—open the “File” menu again and then click the “Export As” command.

In the Export Image window, open the “Select File Type” section and then choose the type of file you want. When you’re done, click the “Export” button.

By default, your image is exported into the same directory as the original file.

If you won’t be using PSD files regularly and don’t want to download any more software to your computer, using a web-based app to handle your PSD files is probably for you.

Photopea is probably one of the best online applications for opening, editing, and converting PSD files. It offers a user interface somewhat similar to GIMP (and Photoshop, for that matter), along with the ability to edit layers, masks, and effects.

After hitting up the Photopea site, open the “File” menu and then click the “Open” command.

Navigate to your file, select it, and then click the “Open” button. This uploads the file to the site and the time that takes will vary depending on the size.

If the file needs any filters, masks, or edits, you can do all of that from Photopea.

However, if you just want to convert the file and be on your way, open the “File” menu again and then click the “Export As” command. The “More” submenu holds a few additional formats in case the main menu doesn’t have the format you need.

After choosing a format, you also can specify the width and height, aspect ratio, and compression rate (quality). When you’re ready, click the “Save” button.

The file will be downloaded to your browser’s downloads folder.

PSD Viewer: An Online Solution Just for Converting PSDs

If all you want is to convert your file without the added features and options for adding filters, masks, and additional layers, then look no further than PSDViewer.org.

The site is super simple and straightforward to use. All you have to do is to upload your file to the website and select the file format to which you want to convert.

Click the “Choose File” button.

Note: The maximum upload size is limited to 100 MB.

When the window pops up, locate your file and then click the “Open” button. This uploads your image to the site.

Many of you will have seen an image file extension around called a .PSD. This is an image file format which is native to the very well known Adobe Photoshop software. While most people tend to use JPEG, BMP or PNG files for their everyday tasks, a PSD file (Photoshop Document) can store a vast amount of extra information about the image such as layers, masks, color profiles, transparency, text, alpha channels etc. PSD files tend to be high quality reference images such as those used in website templates or for desktop publishing. They are also lossless meaning 100% of the image quality is maintained at all times where something like JPEG will subtly lose image quality after every save.

Since PSD files can be opened and edited by Photoshop, not everyone is willing to spend thousands of dollars on the Adobe Creative Suite just to edit a few PSD files. Even if there is are “free” versions of Adobe CS around on the internet, we would still be reluctant to install the few GB of software just because of the need to open and edit a few PSD files and then uninstall it once done.

1. Paint.NET

Paint.NET is a free image and photo editor and is without doubt, our favorite free image editing program. While being easy to use, it has enough features to accomplish just about all of the normal tasks most people would need from such a program. It includes support for multiple layers, unlimited undo, a number of special effects, and importantly, the ability to allow user created plugins.

By default Paint.NET doesn’t support opening PSD files. You’ll need to download and install a Paint.NET plugin for loading and saving Photoshop files. Do take note that the plugin does not support every feature that can be included inside the PSD file format because there are quite a lot of them. The author of this plugin has implemented only the features which has it’s equivalent feature in Paint.NET or if it is useful for converting the image to the Paint.NET internals.

You need to download and install Paint.NET first. Then you have to download the psdplugin, unzip and copy the PhotoShop.dll to the “FileTypes” folder in the Paint.NET directory. By default it should be in C:\Program Files\Paint.NET\FileTypes. Now you can open PSD files. Make sure Paint.NET is not running while installing the plugin.

The GIMP, short for “GNU Image Manipulation Program”, is a free program for a huge number of image editing tasks such as photo retouching, image composition and image creation. It has been said many times that GIMP is about as close as you can get to Photoshop for a free program in terms of powerful features. We would have to agree, but that does also mean it has a steeper learning curve than something like Paint.NET. Although it can be used as a simple paint program, there is also an array of expert quality photo retouching tools, an online batch processor, a mass production image renderer, image format conversion and quite a bit more.

Like Paint.NET, GIMP is expandable with the addition plugins and extensions to do just about anything and enhance the program even further. Everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures can be easily scripted.

The good thing is, GIMP supports opening PSD files by default so there is no need to hunt down and install any plugins. All you need to do is just download and install GIMP. The PSD support is not perfect as of yet, though it is still quite good.

3. PSD Viewer

PSD Viewer is a free a simple tool that allows you to view .PSD, .AI, and .EPS files, with the added basic ability of file type conversion. You can resize the file and then save it back out as a JPG, PNG, BMP, GIf or TIF. There’s various panning, rotating and zooming options to view the file. The PSD support seems to be fairly good and can display multi-layered files although you can’t look at the individual layers. PSD Viewer works on XP and above and requires .NET Framework 3.

4. PNG PSD Viewer

This tool is quite similar to the PNG Viewer above although it’s designed to handle viewing both PNG and PSD files, with the ability to save them out as a JPG file. There is more of focus on viewing multiple files with the help of a slideshow in PNG PSD Viewer, and you can choose from 10 transition effects and set the preferred duration of each slide with zoom and rotate buttons available. Viewing support for PSD seems to be very good and it displayed all of our multi-layer images perfectly.

Whether you use GIMP or Photoshop for image manipulation, you’ll come across an issue on how to open an XCF file in Photoshop. XCF is GIMP native format and is not supported in many image processing apps. However, there is a solution to this issue.

If you spent some time editing photos, you heard of GIMP and Photoshop. If you want to keep image layers and edit your photo, later on, you should save it in PSD format.

Even though image editing programs GIMP and Photoshop have many similarities, there are a few differences. For example, GIMP has support for much more image formats, even PSD Photoshop’s native format. Some of the supported formats you can open with GIMP are GIF, PDF, PSD, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, SVG, TGA, and many more.

Nevertheless, there is a way to open the XCF file in Photoshop, just not directly. Here are several options you can use to open the XCF file in Photoshop:

  • The first solution is exporting to PSD file format if you already have GIMP installed or any other app that supports opening XCF files. You should consider this option if you need to edit your image with Photoshop. Exporting the XCF file to PSD format using GIMP will allow you to access layers of your image.
  • Another option is to export XCF files using GIMP to any other image format that is also supported by Photoshop, for example, TIFF.
  • To avoid XCF files entirely, you can change the default image format for saving in GIMP to one supported in Photoshop. Some versions of this app automatically export to XCF or PNG format.
  • If you don’t have the app GIMP and don’t want to install third-party apps on your PC, you can use a safe image converter such as Converter365 to convert XCF to PSD file format.

How to change the default file format to save in Gimp?

Since GIMP version 2.8 default image format for saving photos has changed. To avoid changing the image format by typing every time, you can adjust the default image format. For the following example, we used GIMP version 2.10.22.

To make JPEG the default image format for saving images in GIMP, you need to follow two steps:

Since Kodak are the ones that have developed the DCR extension, they know perfectly well what kind of software you need to use for opening and converting such files. They’re also fully aware that a large part of editing platforms can’t read them.

Regardless of their motivation, you need to make .dcr files editable if you are to open, change, and share them. More likely than not, your system’s file viewer won’t display a preview for such images unless you have already installed software that lets you open a DCR file. If you haven’t, you might be forced to convert the photos before you can edit them.

As for the question of what is a .dcr file, it represents the highest quality image format akin to the RAW formats used by other camera brands, with all of them following the TIFF mold.

If you copy a combination of RAW + XMP, you can open an already edited RAW file on any computer (regardless of the platform and programs).

How to Open a XMP File?

XMP files are not meant for a manual opening like PNG, JPG or BMP. Instead, they are referenced by the application used to open the corresponding file of the unedited image. However, you can open the XMP file in a text editor to view metadata. Since this format has been developed by Adobe, you can see it in such programs as Photoshop or Lightroom, as well as continue editing the file itself.

There are also a few popular alternative programs that you can use to open the XMP files. They will be helpful for those who are not going to purchase a paid program for opening and editing this file format.

Adobe software. If you use paid versions of Adobe, you can open and edit XMP files in such programs as Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Prelude and Adobe XMP Toolkit.

ACDSee Pro. ACDSee Pro uses XMP to embed ACDSee metadata in each file. When making changes to the ACDSee image, they are saved as an XMP file in the original location of the edited file on the hard disk. Only some file formats and file extensions support XMP. These include GIF, JPEG, DNG, PNG, PSD and TIFF.

Darktable. XMP data files are connected with Darktable. The XMP file is Darktable Sidecar Data. Darktable is an open-source app for working with photos. When you first import an image into Darktable, an XMP file is automatically created with the default settings.

This is one of the most common questions we come across in graphic design – how do I convert a Photoshop PSD document to an Illustrator AI document? Well the answer is much simpler than you might expect and we’re just going to explain the 3 simple steps you need to take in order for your Photoshop document to be converted to Illustrator.

This situation usually occurs when a designer has created something within Photoshop but now needs it in a vector format for print etc such as .ai, .svg or .eps. For this example we’re going to use our company logo and show you how we converted it from a Photoshop document to an Illustrator document.

Step 1: Save in Photoshop

Not to teach you to ‘suck eggs’ here but basically step one is as simple as saving your Photoshop document as you normally would as a .psd file. Simple!

It’s worth noting at this stage that if you don’t want any background on your design and just need the background to be transparent then ensure you don’t have a background colour etc and that the background is transparent (alike the example below where the background is the ‘checkerboard’ effect).

The main thing to note here is that your design MUST be all vector-based layers, by which I mean each element must have been created using the pen, shape or type (text) tool etc.

If your design has been rasterised, flattened, merged or in any way been configured so that if you were to scale up any element it would start to pixelate then this method will not work properly and void what you’re trying to achieve. The method will still ‘technically’ work since you can of course save the document as whatever you like, however if any layers or elements within the design are rasterised in any way then they will not be ‘infinitely scalable’ like a vector-based object and therefor you could find issues if sending a design to print etc.

So for reference you’ll note on the example image below that our logo has been designed using all type tool elements so each layer is a form of text which is technically a vector.

Anyway with that disclaimer out of the way let’s move on!

Step 2: Open Photoshop File in Illustrator

So once your document is saved in Photoshop, go and open Illustrator and the usual method of File > Open and then open the Photoshop document you just saved.

When you have chosen the Photoshop document, a new popup box will appear, please ensure you select the box entitled “Convert Layers to Objects”.

Step 3: Save File in Illustrator

Once the file is open you’ll then see your design appear nicely within Illustrator…phew!

So now it really is a simple case of going to File > Save As… and choosing the format as whichever format you need – .ai, .eps, .svg.

Once you click ‘Save’ you’ll always get a follow up box requiring a list of options, these can of course be changed for your personal preference but usually the preset options work just fine so once you’re happy with your selections just click ‘OK’.

It’s honestly as simple as that – so in essence it’s really just a case of opening your Photoshop document in Illustrator and then saving it as whichever format you need! The key thing really is to remember that all elements/layers need to be vector-based items in Photoshop to ensure you gain the best conversion when moving the design across, otherwise this method won’t work too well, but at least you’ll have the document in the correct format at least if that is the case.

Interoperability between UI and UX tools has become a subject of great curiosity for me. I’m mostly curious about why it’s so terrible.

Send me a Sketch file or a Figma file, and I’m grand. The problem is I work with agencies and see A LOT of different workflows.

A shockingly large population of designers are still using Photoshop for UX, and I’m always getting mockups and concepts sent to me as PSD files.

The file is not supported. Boooo!

Now, I’ve seen some of the best teams and the most amazing designers do all their work in Photoshop. Teams I’d like to continue working with. Around the beginning of this year, I finally snapped and set out to find a way to convert PSD files to Figma.

Disclaimer — “I waffle on for a bit. If you’d like skip this bit. There’s a big heading that will make it obvious when I’m ready to tell you about solutions.”

We can’t just export the design as a png, svg or jpeg from Photoshop and open it in Figma.

I mean we can, but we’ll lose all the application-specific info.

Bye-bye, layers and folders and access to styles and strokes and colours. Literally, everything that made it possible to edit the image in Photoshop is now gone. It is impossible to change these files without remaking them from scratch or extensive rework.

To call something a Photoshop to Figma conversion there needs to be a way to edit individual strokes and fills. The conversion must copy photoshop layers across to Figma as frames. 🖍️🖋️✏️✒️

Figma was built for web design and Photoshop was not.

If I had to put it down to three things I’d say:

  • Lightweighteness
  • Prototyping-abilities
  • Plugins
  • Unmatched collaboration

Since it’s not physically possible to open PSDs in Figma, you need to manually redraw every rectangle, re-colour every gradient and re-group every component.

If I’m being honest that sounds like a super boring and time-consuming task, and I like to keep my workday free for big brain tasks. I’ve had success outsourcing on Upwork, and in Facebook groups specifically for design.

The more complex your design files the harder it is to hire, and the more expensive it is to continue getting quality from freelancers; all good reasons why you might want to look into this next option.

XD2Sketch is still beta software or at least their Photoshop to Figma conversion is. The name kind of gives it away, but they convert other design files too.

I’ve used XD2Sketch a few time since January to open Photoshop designs in Figma.

It works great. Let me show you how to do it.

Upload your file.

You need to wait 20 seconds to fifteen minutes depending on the size of your files, the number of artboards, and your internet connection.

The preview looks promising.

Pay for the conversion.

I buy credits to lower the cost price average per file. It works out to about $50 a month for 8.3 months. I think this is reasonable considering the amount of time it saves me. It takes a very long time to manually export svgs and pngs from Photoshop and recreate the designs in Figma. For this conversion, I have a free coupon.

As soon as I opened the converted file, Figma started telling me that I don’t have the font SFUIText size Medium.

Nice! Look at the layers.

Photoshop looks like torture side-by-side the sensible Figma frames.

Avocode is another paid tool that can convert Photoshop into Figma files. It does this via Sketch.

Figma can open Sketch files.

Avocode works by first converting Photoshop to Sketch and then you can open your Sketch file in Figma.

I’ll upload the same file for demonstration purposes and we’ll see if we can convert it

Next, I press convert and it asks me to pay $5 for the conversion.

You also need to subscribe to one of Avocode’s plans before you can pay $5 to convert your file. The first month isn’t billed until after the trial period.

I did all that and converted the file.

Let’s open the converted Sketch file in Figma.

I think I just wasted $5. But let’s take a closer look.

All the elements have disappeared.

Only my buttons survived.

So what went wrong? Well upon closer inspection everything is there, it’s just that all the background colours were changed to white.

This would be a bit of a hassle to fix.

If I’m doing something wrong please tell me in the comments, but yeah, this has been my experience with Avocode’s photoshop to sketch and then Figma conversion.

There’s always some issue. I’ve tested it with other design files and had mixed results. It’s possible that converting Photoshop to Sketch and opening it in Figma is too ambitious. I don’t know.

XD2Sketch is the best tool available for converting psd to Figma files.

It’s expensive, but when you bulk buy credits, it’s not as expensive as freelancers which is how I was solving this problem before.

I don’t consider exporting svgs and pngs from Photoshop and reassembling them in Figma a viable solution since this takes hours, it’s soul-crushing work and is a massive productivity bottleneck.

PS: I think the whole thing is silly and all design tools should work together.
