Wrapping it up

Getting rid of unused or unwanted email accounts from the Mail app gives you less to manage in your inbox. Do you manage multiple email accounts in the Mail app and if so, is there one that you need to delete?

  • There are many reasons why you might not be getting emails on your iPhone, and there are also many ways to solve the issue.
  • The reason you’re not getting emails on your iPhone could include a number of incorrect mail or fetch settings.
  • Before you begin troubleshooting, make sure that the problem is with your iPhone and not with the email server.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

An iPhone’s inability to send or receive emails can be caused by a variety of problems — it might be a lost connection with the server, an old stored password, or incorrect mail settings.

Below are possible reasons why your email may not be working on your iPhone, and a few solutions to fix it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

How to troubleshoot your email on iPhone

Basic steps to take

1. Make sure your phone is connected to the internet. You might need to reset your network settings, which control how your iPhone connects to your cellular network and Wi-Fi.

2. Try logging into your email on a different device, or check with your email service provider to ensure that the system isn’t temporarily down.

3. Note that backing up your mail through iCloud or iTunes only backs up your email settings, not individual emails. If you edit or delete your email account settings, emails that were previously downloaded onto your phone may be removed.

Check that your email address and password are entered correctly

One of the most common problems with email is that your password is incorrect — if you changed your password on another device, you’ll need to change it on your iPhone, too.

When the Mail application prompts you to re-enter your password, ensure that you’ve entered it correctly.

Check iOS Mail Fetch

Your phone’s default settings for fetching new emails are based on the settings available through your email provider. If your provider doesn’t support Push notifications (where emails are sent to your phone as they arrive, in real time), it will automatically enable Fetch (where your phone retrieves emails regularly at preset times).

These settings impact how your phone receives emails. To adjust them:

1. Open “Settings.”

2. Tap “Passwords and Accounts.”

3. Scroll to the bottom and hit “Fetch New Data.”

4. There, you’ll be able to enable “Push” and can control how often data is “fetched.”

Check your Mail settings

Check that Apple has the right account settings for your email server provider.

Though Apple automatically sets these, users can check that they’re correct. To do this:

1. Go to “Settings” and click “Passwords and Accounts.”

2. Select your email account, and then tap on it again at the top of the next page to see the account settings.

3. There, you’ll be able to see the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Compare these to the recommended settings via Apple’s Mail Settings Lookup widget.

Check your notification settings

There’s a chance you might be receiving emails without being notified. To ensure that you’re receiving the email notifications you want, check your notification settings. To do this:

1. Go to “Settings” and select “Notifications.”

2. Hit “Mail.”

3. Select the email account.

4. Turn notification settings on or off and adjust alerts, sounds, and badges.

Check your outbox

If you’re not getting emails, you might not be able to send them either.

After you troubleshoot your email settings, check your Outbox, which stores unsent messages, to ensure that everything has sent properly.

1. Open your Mail app and hit “Mailboxes” in the upper-left corner

2. Find the Outbox folder and select it. If there are no messages in your Outbox, your phone may not display an Outbox folder.

4. If you’re able to open your Outbox and see your unsent email, tap it to ensure that the recipient’s email address is correct.

5. Tap “Send” to try sending again.

If all else fails, contact your email provider or system administrator for additional troubleshooting assistance.

Do you use iMessage to stay in touch with your friends, family, and colleagues? If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, you might not necessarily be aware of the fact that you can use an email address with iMessage instead of your phone number.

Apple’s iMessage service that’s baked into the stock Messages app is extremely popular among Apple users, as it offers a free and convenient way to text other iPhone, iPad, and Mac owners. If you’re on an iPhone, your phone number is used to activate iMessage by default. However, you can manually add the Apple ID that’s linked to your device or add any other Apple account for that matter. This allows you to send and receive texts from other iMessage users while keeping your phone number private.

It should be pointed out that adjusting settings like this can lead to some confusion down the road, and for most users it’s best to just let iMessage use the default settings and Apple ID as expected. Using multiple Apple ID’s is not an ideal scenario and is not recommended by Apple.

How to Add or Remove Email Addresses from iMessage on iPhone & iPad

Adding or removing email addresses for use with iMessage is a pretty simple and straightforward procedure on iOS devices. Just follow the steps below to get started.

Head over to “Settings” from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad.

In the settings menu, scroll down and tap on “Messages” to change the settings for iMessage.

Here, tap on “Send & Receive” as shown in the screenshot below to proceed to the next step.

In this menu, tap on “Use your Apple ID for iMessage” to add an iMessage email address.

Now, you’ll have the option to choose the Apple account you want to use with Apple ID. To add the Apple account email address that’s linked to your device, simply tap on “Sign In”. Or, if you want to use a different account, choose “Use Other Apple ID”.

If you want to remove an email address that you’re already using, tap on your Apple ID email address at the bottom of the “Send & Receive” section as shown below.

Now, choose “Sign Out” and you’re good to go.

That’s pretty much all there is to it. Now you know how easy it is to add or remove iMessage email addresses on your iPhone or iPad.

Once you’ve added an email account, you’ll have the option to deselect your phone number and stop using it for iMessage in the same menu. This way, you can keep texting iMessage users from the email address, and without having to reveal your actual phone number.

The fact that you can use a completely different Apple ID account for iMessage makes it even better. This is the kind of feature that privacy buffs would love to have. There’s one downside to this capability, however. When you use a different Apple account for iMessage, you won’t be able to use iCloud with iMessage, since the iCloud email address is the one that’s linked to your device.

Unless you’re using the linked Apple account for iMessage, your iMessage conversations won’t be synced across all your other Apple devices. That being said, nothing’s stopping you from switching to a different iCloud account for use with your iOS/iPadOS devices.

This article explains how to delete an email account from an iPhone. These instructions apply to iOS 12 and later, but the steps are similar for all recent versions of the Apple mobile operating system.

IMAP, POP, and Exchange, as well as accounts configured with automatic settings (such as Gmail, Outlook.com, and iCloud Mail), will have all content wiped from the iPhone—iOS Mail removes all emails and folders listed and created under the account. In other words, you’ll no longer see messages in the Mail app.

Deleting an Email Account From the iPhone Doesn’t Delete the Account

When an email account is deleted from an iPhone, the email account and address remain unchanged. You can still receive and send emails on the web or in other email programs set up to use the email account.

Deleting an Email Account Doesn’t Delete the Emails From the Server

For IMAP and Exchange accounts, nothing changes on the server or in any other email program set up to access the same account. iPhone Mail stops accessing the messages and folders, and you are no longer able to send email from the account using that app. Nothing changes for POP accounts either.

With POP, the iPhone may be the only place where emails are stored. This is the case if iOS Mail is set up to delete emails from the server after downloading them and the messages have not been saved anywhere else.

Deleting Calendars and Other Features of Your Account

Deleting an email account from an iPhone also removes calendars, notes, to-do items, and contacts that use this account. If you want access to those features, disable only the email for that account.

How to Disable Email from Your Account

To turn off an email account on the iPhone but not disable access to the calendar:

In the Settings app, scroll down and select Mail > Accounts.

    Choose an email account.

For IMAP and Exchange accounts, turn off the Mail toggle switch. For POP email accounts, turn off Account.

On older versions of iOS, tap Done. If you don’t see the Done button, the changes are saved, and you can exit the settings.

How to Turn Off Notifications Only

You can also disable automatic mail checking or notifications for the account. Then you can receive and send messages from the account, but it remains hidden from sight and out of the way.

To turn off automatic mail checking for an account on an iPhone:

In the Settings app, scroll down and select Mail > Accounts.

    Tap Fetch New Data.

    Choose the email account.

Select Manual. To find the Manual option on older versions of iOS, tap Select Schedule.

How to Disable Notifications for New Messages

To disable only notifications for new messages you receive at an iPhone email account, while the messages are still downloaded automatically and ready once you open Mail:

From the Settings app, open Notifications.

    Scroll down and select Mail.

Select the account for which you want to disable new mail notifications.

Turn off the Allow Notifications toggle switch.

Some older versions of iOS have different settings. If you don’t see the above, go to Alert style when unlocked and select None. Also, turn off Show in Notification Center and Show on Lock Screen. Optionally, disable the Badge App Icon.

How to Hide a Mailbox Within the Mail App

To hide an account’s inbox from the top of the Mail Mailboxes screen:

From the Mail app, swipe left to display the Mailboxes screen.

    Select Edit.

Clear the check mark next to the mail account.

To move an inbox or account, drag the three-bar icon () next to the account to a different place in the list.

Choose Done to save the changes.

To open an account’s inbox, go to the Mailboxes screen, select the account, and tap Inbox.

You will receive notifications for emails from VIP senders. Notifications for these messages are handled separately; you receive them even if you have notifications turned off for an account. To change the VIP notification settings, go to Notifications > Mail > VIP.

The same applies to thread notifications. If iOS Mail is set to alert you to replies you receive in a conversation, the settings for thread notifications apply instead of those for the account where you receive the email. To change alert settings, open the Settings app and go to Notifications > Mail > Thread Notifications.

How do I manage an email account on an iPhone?

Tap the Mail app and choose an email account. Swipe left on a single email and select More. The More screen includes the usual Reply, Reply All, and Forward choices as well as Mark as Read, Archive Message, Flag, Mute, and others. Note that this only works with one email at a time.

How do I bulk delete emails from an account on an iPhone?

Scroll through the list of emails and tap the ones you want to delete. Select Trash at the bottom of the screen. There is no Select All option in the Mail app on the iPhone, so this is the best way to remove emails in bulk.

Why is the email account on my iPhone offline?

This can happen if you have disabled Cellular Data for the Mail app. Check it by going to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and confirm the slider is in the On position. If you’ve travelled recently, check that Airplane Mode is turned off. It can also cause your email account to be offline.

The Apple Mail app is a versatile app that allows you to view all of your email accounts in one place. When you find yourself no longer using an account, however, you can simply remove it through the Settings app on your iPhone.

Most people have multiple email accounts, and at the bare minimum have a personal account and a work account. Apple’s Mail app allows you to sync these together — which you can also do on Outlook or Gmail — instead of downloading the separate apps for each.

To remove an email address, you can access account details in your Settings app. From there, you can also choose what data you’d like to sync the account with — including your calendars and contacts.

If you don’t want to continue to receive email from a particular account in the Mail app for Windows 10, you can either delete the account and remove it from the app, or you can turn off email for that account. Deleting or removing an account from either app will also remove any calendar associated with that account.

Delete an account from the Mail and Calendar apps

In either the Mail or Calendar apps, choose Settings in the lower-left corner.

Note: If you’re using a phone or tablet, choose More at the bottom of the page to see the Settings option.

Choose Manage Accounts, and then choose the account that you want to remove.

How to remove email accounts from the mail app on iphone and ipad

Choose Delete account. If you don’t see the Delete account option, you’re probably trying to remove the default email account added when you logged on to Windows 10. You can turn off email from this account instead.

Note: The Delete account option removes the account from the Mail and Calendar apps, but does not affect the account itself. For example, if you remove an Outlook.com account from the Mail and Calendar apps, you can still access that account using another email client or on the web at

Turn off email for an account

If you want to disable email for an account, either because you can’t delete the default account or because you only want to use an account for your calendar, you can modify the sync settings for the account.

Choose Settings in the lower-left corner.

Note: If you’re using a phone or tablet, choose More at the bottom of the page to see the Settings option.

Choose Manage Accounts, and then choose the account you no longer want to receive email from.

Choose Change mailbox sync settings, then scroll down to Sync options.

Use the slider to set Email to Off and then choose Done > Save.

Most of the popular email service providers that are available today offer several gigabytes of storage for your email content, which is typically more than enough to hold several years worth of email conversations, newsletters, and other attachments. However, there are still times when you feel the need to delete some emails from your account. You may be close to reaching the storage limit on your account, or you may just want to delete unwanted junk email that are cluttering up your inbox. There are also those times when you’ve unsubscribed from a newsletter and want to delete all the previous copies of that newsletter you’ve received in your inbox.

No matter what the reason, there are times when you just have to delete multiple emails on your iPhone or iPad. These devices make for an excellent way to have easy access to all your email in your pocket or backpack, but that also means you need to learn how to delete multiple emails on these devices. Deleting emails from your iOS devices not just saves you the hassle of opening and using your Mac to delete all emails, it also allows you to carefully peruse through the list of emails you’re trying to delete so as to avoid deleting unwanted emails.

Let’s take a quick look at how you can select multiple emails on your iPhone or iPad and delete them with a few simple taps.

How to Select & Delete Multiple Emails on iPhone or iPad

    1. Download and launch Spark on your iPhone or iPad.
    2. Using the sidebar menus, navigate to your Inbox, Archive, or any other folder that holds the emails you are trying to delete.

    4. Once you have the emails in view, tap and hold down on the first email that you want to delete.
    5. When you do this, Spark enables the multi-select mode for the email list, denoted by small circles on the left of each email conversation.

How to remove email accounts from the mail app on iphone and ipad

When setting up a mail account on your Mac or iPhone, you may sometime receive a message saying “The account already exists”. This is a very common problem which arises because of a problem with the keychain of iCloud. This is really frustrating as you will not be able to add that particular email account to your phone or Mac computer, no matter how many times you repeat the process. But nothing to worry as we have discussed the solutions here.

    Why this really happens?

Well, the reason behind this issue is the iCloud itself. An iCloud account saves a large amount of data. The email account which you are trying to add is also present in your iCloud data which iCloud is trying to sync, but it is stuck for some reason. So as soon as you sign out of you sign out of your iCloud account the email the iCloud keychain stops syncing that mail and then you can easily add it to your Mac or iPhone. Once you have successfully added the account, you can log in back with your iCloud.

Steps to fix Mail Account already exist on Mac

    Turn your Mac on.

Now click on the Apple logo. It is present in the top left corner. This will open a new window.

Click on System Preferences and then on iCloud option present in the third row

Click on Sign out option. This will sign you out from your iCloud account.

    Now add the mail account.

    Sign back to your iCloud

You will no longer see the error message.

Here is how it’s done on iPhone

How to remove email accounts from the mail app on iphone and ipad

Go to setting and then tap on your name.

Scroll down and then tap on the sign out option. You will find it at the bottom.

Enter your password when asked. After entering the password tap the Turn Off option.

Now go to mail and add the account.

Go back to settings and then click on iCloud to sign back.

    This will fix the problem.

You have successfully added your mail account.

Below are suggestions taken from apple.stackexchange.com:

“This can be caused by three things. iCloud being messed up (and trying to sync your internet accounts) and corruption on the Mail settings and corruption in general in your user settings.

    A. Set up a brand new user account – with no iCloud and no Apple ID. Try adding the mail account there from System Preferences – Internet Accounts Preference Pane

If that doesn’t work – your gmail is messed up or you need to reinstall the Mac from scratch (i.e. something is really wrong with the OS – this would be my last resort – make sure Gmail settings are clear at that point before backing up and wiping the Mac)

    B. Sign out of iCloud on your Mac with your normal account.

Get a good backup before you delete content on the Mac. You will want to delete anything that’s synced to iCloud to let the system clear out data that depends on iCloud. If you’re paranoid, export data like Contacts and Calendar to a stand alone export/backup before you take this step. Then repeat the remove/add procedure.

    C. Go to the logs. You’ll need to run sysdiagnose Mail and then get into Console app and perhaps Log Connection Activity by opening the Mail Connection Doctor and checking that option.”

I also found suggestions for a fix on StackExchange: “This can be caused by three things. iCloud being messed up (and trying to sync your internet accounts) and corruption on the Mail settings and corruption in general in your user settings.

    To troubleshoot this:
We already stated in the article the first suggestion which they also share so continuing onwards to B:

    D. Go to the logs. You’ll need to run sysdiagnose Mail and then get into Console app and perhaps Log Connection Activity by opening the Mail Connection Doctor and checking that option.”

Thank you! I was having this issue but your information helped me to solve it! It’s great to be able to access my email accounts on my Mac again 🙂
