IMAP, POP, and Exchange, as well as accounts configured with automatic settings (such as Gmail, Outlook.com, and iCloud Mail), will have all content wiped from the iPhone—iOS Mail removes all emails and folders listed and created under the account. In other words, you’ll no longer see messages in the Mail app.
Deleting an Email Account From the iPhone Doesn’t Delete the Account
When an email account is deleted from an iPhone, the email account and address remain unchanged. You can still receive and send emails on the web or in other email programs set up to use the email account.
Deleting an Email Account Doesn’t Delete the Emails From the Server
For IMAP and Exchange accounts, nothing changes on the server or in any other email program set up to access the same account. iPhone Mail stops accessing the messages and folders, and you are no longer able to send email from the account using that app. Nothing changes for POP accounts either.
With POP, the iPhone may be the only place where emails are stored. This is the case if iOS Mail is set up to delete emails from the server after downloading them and the messages have not been saved anywhere else.
Deleting Calendars and Other Features of Your Account
Deleting an email account from an iPhone also removes calendars, notes, to-do items, and contacts that use this account. If you want access to those features, disable only the email for that account.
How to Disable Email from Your Account
To turn off an email account on the iPhone but not disable access to the calendar:
In the Settings app, scroll down and select Mail > Accounts.
Choose an email account.
For IMAP and Exchange accounts, turn off the Mail toggle switch. For POP email accounts, turn off Account.
On older versions of iOS, tap Done. If you don’t see the Done button, the changes are saved, and you can exit the settings.
How to Turn Off Notifications Only
You can also disable automatic mail checking or notifications for the account. Then you can receive and send messages from the account, but it remains hidden from sight and out of the way.

Note: This fix does not work with Hotmail account. Hotmail is NOT IMAP, it used EAS and does not offer these options. To fix Hotmail the account needs to be removed fully and then setup as an “Outlook.com” email in the iOS Mail setup.
How to delete email from iPad or iPhone – Instructions:
Navigate to your email account’s settings
- Go To Settings (Gear icon).
- iOS 9 and earlier: Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- iOS 10: Tap Mail.
- iOS 11: Tap Accounts and Passwords.
- Select your email account.
- Tap the “Account” line to pull up the settings sheet.

If you don’t want to continue to receive email from a particular account in the Mail app for Windows 10, you can either delete the account and remove it from the app, or you can turn off email for that account. Deleting or removing an account from either app will also remove any calendar associated with that account.

When setting up a mail account on your Mac or iPhone, you may sometime receive a message saying “The account already exists”. This is a very common problem which arises because of a problem with the keychain of iCloud. This is really frustrating as you will not be able to add that particular email account to your phone or Mac computer, no matter how many times you repeat the process. But nothing to worry as we have discussed the solutions here.
Why this really happens?
Well, the reason behind this issue is the iCloud itself. An iCloud account saves a large amount of data. The email account which you are trying to add is also present in your iCloud data which iCloud is trying to sync, but it is stuck for some reason. So as soon as you sign out of you sign out of your iCloud account the email the iCloud keychain stops syncing that mail and then you can easily add it to your Mac or iPhone. Once you have successfully added the account, you can log in back with your iCloud.

C. Go to the logs. You’ll need to run sysdiagnose Mail and then get into Console app and perhaps Log Connection Activity by opening the Mail Connection Doctor and checking that option.”

Hi, I have tried this solution several times now, signing out of iCloud then trying to add the email account, but I still get the same ‘this account already exists’ message. Any other suggestions how to solve this one ? It’s getting really frustrating !
