Log out of Messenger on your Android or iOS device

So you’ve scoured every tab on Facebook’s Messenger app looking for a logout option with no luck. What gives?

For whatever reason, Facebook has designed its Messenger app so that you can’t log out of it — at least not with a direct logout option available within the app. There are, however, a few tricks you can use to disconnect your account from the Messenger app (which is essentially the equivalent of logging out) without having to delete the app from your device.

These instructions cover how to sign out of Messenger that’s logged in from an Android or iOS device.

Log out From Messenger via Android Settings

Android users have an advantage over iOS users thanks to the app settings they have available to them. With this particular method, you don’t even need to access the official Facebook app or Messenger app because everything can be done from within your app settings.

Select Apps & notifications.

Additional Steps

In case, you have recently made a chat with the same person, then head over to Chats section. Here, long press on the user conversation thread.

From the menu select Ignore messages. This will save the same user for sending you messages in the future unless you accept the invitation again.

Apart from this, you can also select Delete (for deleting messages) or Block (to block the user from Messenger permanently)

Remove Facebook Friends from Messenger

In case, you want to delete people from Messenger who’re your friends on Facebook, then here’s what you need to do:

1. To remove Facebook friends from the Messenger contact list, you need to unfriend the same person from the Facebook account.

2. Head over to the Profile of the person.
3. Tap on Friend option and from the menu select Unfriend.

This will remove the person from your Facebook friend list and also from the Messenger contact list.

To confirm this thing, launch the Messenger app, and head over to All People list following the steps discussed above.

Additional Tip

[Windows Tip] How to Remove “NEW” Tag from Newly Installed Program Shortcuts in Start Menu

Recently an AskVG reader asked me about a method to disable the “NEW” tag present on newly installed program shortcuts in Start Menu of Windows 10.

Actually in Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems, after installing a new software program if you check its shortcut entry in Start Screen or Start Menu, you’ll see a “NEW” tag present next to the shortcut as shown in following screenshot:

It’s a feature of Windows OS which helps users in identifying the newly installed programs easily but sometimes this feature becomes very irritating when the “NEW” mark is displayed on several newly installed programs.

Microsoft has not provided any option to permanently disable or hide the appearance of “NEW” tag on newly installed programs. Also I was unable to find any group policy or registry tweak to turn off the “NEW” tag display in Start Menu.

I also tried the good ol’ registry trick to disable highlighting of newly installed programs in Start Menu which requires creating new DWORD Start_NotifyNewApps in “HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced” key and settings its value to 0. It used to work in older Windows versions such as Windows XP but unfortunately it no longer works in Windows 8/8.1/10.

As of now I’m aware of only 2 ways to remove the “NEW” tag from newly installed programs shortcuts in Start Menu which are as following:

METHOD 1:

If you launch the newly installed program by clicking on its shortcut present in Start Menu/Start Screen, it’ll immediately remove the “NEW” tag from the shortcut. So you just need to open the program once and the “NEW” tag will disappear.

METHOD 2:

If you don’t want to open the program, just right-click on the program shortcut which is showing the “NEW” tag. As soon as you right-click on it, the “NEW” tag will disappear from the shortcut.

These are the only ways to get rid of the “NEW” tag from newly installed program shortcut in Start Menu. If I come across any working solution to completely disable this feature, I’ll update this tutorial.

Facebook’s mobile takeover strategy hit a new milestone Tuesday. The company announced that SMS text messages can now be sent and received through its Android Messenger app.

That can get annoying real quick, but luckily, you can remove yourself from the group text to stop that annoyance from happening.

Remove yourself from a group text

Much like as is the case over on iOS, Android users aren’t able to remove themselves from a group text that they have been added to. Your only option here is to ask to be removed from the group text, which would require the creator to start a new group text, but without you in it. Or, you can go the less complicated route — mute the group text.

It’s actually easy to mute group texts. The first step is to, of course, open your default stock messaging app on your phone, and we’re not referring to Android Messages here. These are two entirely different services.

While the conversation will be muted, text messages will still go to your phone. You’ll see a small bubble on your main screen attached to your messaging app, showing you the number of text notifications you’ve missed. You’ll also see the unread messages in your text messaging app appear unread as well. The only thing this process solves is stopping the constant dinging or notification sounds on your phone.

Using Facebook Messenger

A lot of people are moving away from standard text messaging, and using instant services like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and others instead. Luckily, it’s much easier to drop out of a group conversation in Facebook Messenger and similar services.

Open up the Messenger app on your phone or tablet. Following this process on either device will leave the group conversation on all devices, given that you’re using the same linked account. Tap on the conversation that you want to leave, and then tap on the name of the group at the top of the conversation. The “name” could simply be the list of participants.

Finally scroll down to the Options category. Tap the choice that says Leave Chat. A pop up will appear, asking you if you really want to leave the chat. You can tap on Leave again to confirm your choice.

Once pressed, the group conversation (at least your instance of it) will be archived. Since it’s not outright deleted, you’ll be able to look over your previous messages in the Messenger Archives, but you won’t be able to get any new messages within the context of that group text. Once you confirm and tap on that Leave button, the conversation automatically disappears from your list of messages.

Keep in mind that you will be able to be added back to the conversation, if someone in that group decides to add you again. You’ll actually have to block that specific group message (or the person adding you) to make sure you aren’t brought back into that group conversation.

Verdict

As you can see, removing yourself from a group text on Android is almost impossible. Once you’re roped in, there’s no getting out; that is, unless you decide to start blocking numbers. However, you can still mute those conversations to stop receiving notifications. Alternatively, it’s pretty easy to leave conversations in the context of an instant messaging app like Facebook Messenger.

Facebook killed their M chat bot a few months back because it was more artificially stupid than artificially intelligent. Unfortunately, it lives on as the equally unintelligent M Suggestions in Facebook Messenger. Here’s how to turn those off.

What is Facebook M?

Facebook M was a virtual assistant chat bot that actually used humans to do most things. Facebook’s plan was to use the humans to train the chat bot, and then phase out how much the humans had to do. This didn’t work.

A lot of noise was made in the press about Facebook M, but it was only ever available to around 2,000 Californians. The human end of things could never really scale to more.

At the start of this year, Facebook pulled the plug on M as an independent chat bot. Instead, it lives on in M Suggestions based off what they learned from working with the chat bot. It doesn’t, however, seem like they’ve learned that much.

M Suggestions pop up based on the context of your conversations. It can do things like:

• Suggest some appropriate stickers for a reply.
• Pay or request money.
• Share your location.
• Help you make plans.
• Start a poll so you can get a group of people to decide what to do.
• Hail an Uber or Lyft.

If these sound like kind of things you can quickly and easily do with, say, an app or by using your words, you’d be right. I’ve found that M Suggestions are at best, irrelevant. At worst, they’re actively in the way, and I often tap them by mistake.

How to Turn Off Facebook M Suggestions

To turn off Facebook M Suggestions, open Facebook Messenger, and then tap your profile icon. On iOS, it’s at the top left of the screen; on Android it’s at the top right.

Scroll down and select the “M Settings” category.

To get rid of M suggestions, just turn the “Suggestions” toggle off.

And just like that, M will annoy you no more. If it ever does start being actually useful, you can always turn it back on.

Interesting, I did not know that the standard Windows Phone app “Transfer my data” (by Microsoft) also could export text messages – both SMS & MMS – to an SD card! 🙂 It was easy to export them and to get the exported files to my Windows computer.

The next question is how to read the exported .vmsg file (SMS) and .pdu files (MMS). Are you familiar with those? Do you have any good suggestions? (I have searched but so far only found a potential Python script for converting .vmsg files to .csv.)

I am moving to an iPhone, but unless there is a very easy way to do it, I don’t feel the need to import my messages to that device. As long as I can keep & read them on my computer, I’m happy. 🙂
