I recently helped a client recover his forgotten Windows password by using a couple of different tools. We eventually were able to reset the Administrator password to a blank password so that he could log into Windows. It was a fairly long and complicated process, but it worked. Unfortunately, there is no “one” way to reset a Windows password and depending on what version of Windows you are running, you might have to try different methods.

In the end, there is also no real guarantee that you’ll be able to crack the password. There are already so many articles written on how to recover or reset a password that I’m not going to reinvent the wheel, but instead will guide you to the best online resources that I have used to crack my Windows password.

1. Ophcrack Live CD – My favorite ways to blank out or crack a Windows password is to use a Linux Live CD. These are special distributions of Linux that run directly from the CD (no installation required) and are specially designed for cracking Windows passwords. You can read the documentation to learn how to use it.

Simply burn the ISO and boot using the CD and the program will get right to work. It may not work, however, on very complicated passwords because it actually tries to determine the password rather than reset it. My buddy over at the How-To Geek site has a great tutorial on using Ophcrack.

Also, Ophcrack uses password tables to brute force crack the user passwords. You can download their free tables, but that won’t crack long passwords. For those cases, you can purchase larger password tables that range from $100 to $1000.

2. Offline NT Password and Registry Editor – This is a very small program, only 3MB in size that you can burn to a CD and boot to. It’ll auto-detect the Windows installation and the account names (that is if everything was installed in the default Windows directories). Using this program you can reset or blank out a Windows password, which means it doesn’t matter how long or complicated it is.

The program was recently updated after four years and now supports cracking passwords all the way up to Windows 8. It’s a bit hard to use, but About.com has a great screenshot guide that walks you through the entire process, so be sure to check that out.

3. Login Recovery – Login Recovery is a web site that has a program that you can either download onto a floppy disk or a cd that you than use to boot up with. If the PC is connected to the Internet, it will automatically upload the encrypted data to their servers and begin the process of trying to recover the passwords. If you don’t have an Internet connection, it will generate a file, which you then manually upload to their site.

I have tried this site and it did not work for my password, which was 11 characters and mostly symbols, numbers, and letters. However, if the password is something simpler, they will probably be able to crack it.

4. John The Ripper – Another free password cracker that works on Windows, Linux and Macs, so it’s useful for any Mac or Linux user who wants to recovery a password. Pretty easy to use and comes with good instructions, so most people can follow along. If you want a step by step guide on using John the Ripper, check out this article from 101Hacker.com.

5. Knoppix STD – G4TV has a good article on another Linux distro you can download and use to crack your Windows password. Follow the detailed instructions he gives and if the password is not too long or difficult, it should be able to crack it!

5. Click “Reboot”, once a confirm message pops up, remove you USB disk and then click “Yes” to restart the computer.

You can change your password in Windows 11 through Windows XP via the User Accounts applet in Control Panel. However, the steps involved differ somewhat depending on which operating system you use, so be sure to take note of those differences when they’re called out below.

Change Your Password in Windows 11, 10, and 8

Follow these instructions to change your password in Windows 8, 10, or 11.

Using the search bar, type sign in options and then choose Sign-in options from the list of results.

If that doesn’t work, open Control Panel, choose User Accounts (Windows 11/10) or User Accounts and Family Safety (Windows 8), then the User Accounts link, followed by the Make changes to my account in PC Settings.

In Windows 11 & 10, select Password and then choose Change.

Option 3: Have an Administrator Change Windows Sever 2016 password

The next way to bypass a forgotten Windows Server 2016 login password is to have another account on the server change your lost password for you. This will only work if that account comes with administrator level access. In that case, you just sign in with that account to get your password unlocked on Windows Server 2016. Here’s how to do.

• Log on to your Windows Server 2016 system from Remote Desktop with an account that’s set up with administrator privilege.
• Type the word “administrative tools” on the start menu “Search Box” then click on the “Computer Management” item from the search results.
• In the left panel of Computer Management window, navigate the following path: “Local Users and Groups” → Users folder, where you can view the details of the user accounts.

Option 4: Clean Reinstall Windows Server 2016

This is the last-resort fix you really don’t want to try but it’s a certain fix for a Windows Server 2016 password lost problem.

Important note: a clean install of Windows Server 2016 will erase everything from the drive that Windows is installed on and return your computer to the same state it was in the day you first turned it on. So be sure to get all of your important information backed up in somewhere safe before you begin this process.

Yes, it is possible to reset your Windows Vista password. Not only is it possible, but it’s not even that difficult. A password reset disk, which you can read more about in Step 12, is the only “approved” way to reset a Windows Vista password but the trick we’ve described below is relatively easy to do and works almost every time.

If you know your password and just want to change it there’s a clear procedure that does not involve following the steps in this article.

How to Reset a Windows Vista Password

Insert your Windows Vista installation DVD into your optical drive and then restart your computer. See How to Boot From a CD, DVD, or BD Disc if you need help.

If you can’t find, or never had, a Windows Vista install disc, it’s okay to borrow someone else’s. You’re not going to reinstall Windows Vista or doing anything that breaks your, or your friend’s, license agreement with Microsoft.

Wait for the Install Windows screen to appear and then press Next.

If Windows Vista starts normally, or you don’t see this screen, then your computer probably booted from your hard drive instead of from your Vista disc. Restart your computer to try again or see the booting tutorial we linked to in the first step above for more help.

Wait while your Windows Vista installation is located on your computer.

Once your Windows Vista installation is found, look for the drive letter noted in the Location column.

Most Windows Vista installations will show C: but sometimes it’ll be D:. Whatever it may be, remember it or jot it down.

From the Operating System list, of probably just one entry, highlight Windows Vista and then select Next. System Recovery Options will open.

Choose Command Prompt from the list of recovery tools.

In Command Prompt, type the following two commands, in this order, pressing Enter after each line to execute it:

Answer Yes to the Overwrite question you’re asked after executing the second command.

If Windows Vista is installed on a drive other than the C: drive, something you determined in Step 4 above, change the four instances of c: in the two commands above with whatever drive letter it should be.

Remove your Windows Vista disc and restart the computer.

Wait for Windows to boot to the Vista login screen.

On the Windows Vista login screen, select the little pie-shaped icon at the bottom-left corner.

Now that Command Prompt is open, use the net user command as demonstrated below but replace myuser with your username and newpassword with the password you want to set:

net user myuser newpassword

For example, we might do something like this:

Put double quotes around your username if it includes spaces. For example: net user “Jon Fisher” [email protected].

Once you see the “command completed successfully” message, close Command Prompt and log in with your new password!

If you can’t get in, restart your computer and try again.

Now that you’re logged back in, create a Windows Vista password reset disk. Once you have one of these, you’ll never need to worry about forgetting your password or hacking your way back in like this again.

Lastly, we recommend reversing the changes you made to make this trick work. You don’t have to, but if you don’t, you’ll no longer have access to Vista’s accessibility features at the login screen. To undo everything, except for your password—which will keep working as you’ve reset it in Step 10, repeat Steps 1 through 6 exactly as outlined above.

From Command Prompt, execute the following command and then restart your computer again:

Answer Yes when asked to confirm the overwriting of utilman.exe.

Never be locked out of your system again

How often do you forget your Windows login password? If it happens way too often, maybe you should create a password reset disk.

In this post, you’ll learn how to create a password reset disk so you’ll never be locked out of your system again.

What You’ll Need

A password reset disk is stored on a USB flash drive. You’ll also need the password for the computer you want to access. That’s pretty much all you’ll need.

You can’t create a password reset disk if you don’t know the current password. You also won’t be able to store the program on a CD or DVD. It won’t work on an external hard drive either.

How To Make a Password Reset Disk

Windows has a built-in application called Forgotten Password Wizard. This Windows password recovery tool is what you’ll use to create your password reset disk.

Use Search to look for, then open, Control Panel.

Once open, go to User Accounts.

In the next screen, click User Accounts.

You’ll be shown a number of options for securing your Windows account. This includes the ability to create a password reset disk located in the left-hand pane.

You need to insert your USB drive at this point in order to proceed.

Clicking on Create a Password Reset Disk will open the Forgotten Password Wizard.

The wizard will walk you through the process. To start, click Next.

You will be asked to select the drive where you want to store the reset disk. If you only have one flash drive inserted, it will be selected by default.

Click Next to proceed. On the next page, you’ll be asked to provide your current Windows password.

The tool will proceed to create the reset disk.

Once the progress bar hits 100%, click Next.

On the next page, click Finish.

At this point, you can check the flash drive. If the process was a success, it should now house a file called USERKEY.PSW.

Remove your USB flash drive from your computer. We’d advise you to label it and store in a safe location.

Anyone can now access your computer if they have the USB with them — even if you change your password. That’s why it’s important to hide your password reset disk properly.

One Reset Disk Per Account

The reset disk you created will only work for one account. If you have other users on your computer, you won’t be able to access their accounts.

If you want access to all users, you will need to redo the entire process, this time while logged into their accounts. If you don’t have their passwords, you will not be able to create a password reset disk for them.

How To Use a Password Reset Disk

The next time you’re locked out of your PC, plug in your USB stick and click Reset Password.

You will be shown a drop-down menu with your USB drive as an option. Select the disk and click Next.

You will be prompted to type your new password and a password hint. When you’re done, click Finish.

You should now be able to sign into Windows with your new password.

• Once you get to Windows login screen, press the Shift key five times, and the Command Prompt appears.
• Now to recover a Windows 7 password, enter the following command: net user myaccountname desiredpassword. Substitute myaccountname and desiredpassword with any combination as appropriate.
• Close Command Prompt and type the new password to login back to Windows 7 desktop.

Reset your password

If the password you typed is incorrect, you’ll see a message that says:

Your account or password is incorrect. If you don’t remember your password, reset it now.

We recommend following the steps below to resolve your password issues. If you already tried this but it didn’t work, move ahead to Step 2: If you can’t reset your password.

1. Select Forgot password?

If the Enter password window is still open select Forgot password?

(Or go directly to Reset password and enter the username name again for the account you’re trying to reset and select Next).

2. Verify your identity

For your protection, Microsoft must verify your identity before you can proceed with resetting your password.

How to verify your identity depends if you previously added security info to your account and if you can still access them. Select from the two options below.

Option 1: You received and can select a verification option

Select which option to send the verification code to.

Option 2: No verification options are given or you can no longer access any of the options

If you don’t see an option for where to send a code or you no longer have access to any of the verification options shown, you won’t be able to reset your password this way.

Try the solutions listed in Step 2: If you can’t reset your password. If those don’t work either, or if you selected I can’t receive a code from this verification page, you’ll begin the account recovery process.

3. Get a verification code

Depending on the contact method you chose, retype the first part of the email address or the last four digits of the phone number hinted at in the previous window.

Select Get code.

Microsoft will send a verification code to the email or phone number you selected.

Go to the recovery phone or email for where you expect to receive the code.

Tip: If you didn’t receive a message, check your junk folder or if you selected the phone option, make sure your phone has service and can receive texts, and verify your phone isn’t set up to block texts from unknown numbers.

4. Enter code and reset password

Paste or type the code you received and select Next.

Type your new password and select Next.
