How to restrict access to your xbox one with a passcode

Whether you’ve got kids in the house and want to keep them off certain streaming programs or roommates who have a bad habit of overwriting your progress in Fallout 4, creating a passkey for your Xbox One profile is a must for protecting your downloaded games, video app profiles, and game saves.

How to Create Your Passkey

Start by opening up your Sign in, Security & Passkey settings by double-tapping the button, then pressing Y.

Find the gear icon at the bottom of the following menu, and press A to continue.

Once in Settings, you’ll be taken to the Account tab. In this section, press the button for “Sign-in, security & passcode”, and you’ll be taken to your account security management tools.

Here you’ll see several options, including removing your email that’s associated with that Xbox, turning Instant sign-in on (or off), and the option to create a new passkey.

Navigate to the box labeled “Create my Passkey”, and press A to continue.

Here is where you’ll set your six-digit code to lock down your account. Each number corresponds to a different button on your controller (up on the D-pad for “1”, pull down the right tigger for “6”), etc. This is how you’ll create your passkey, as well as how you’ll log in the next time the Xbox One reboots.

You’ll be asked to enter the key one more time for confirmation.

Change Your Sign-In Settings

Once the passkey is confirmed, you’ll be taken back to the main security dashboard.

To set the login options that protect your acccount from unauthorized users, tap on the button for “Change my sign-in & security preferences”.

Here you’ll see a few different choices, including the option to have no barriers to entry, asking for a passkey, or locking the entire Xbox down to your Microsoft Live account details instead.

For the sake of this tutorial, only choose the “Ask for my passkey option”.

Once you’ve confirmed your selection, you can see how your Xbox is being protected from the main Security window. If your tab has the “Ask for my passkey” box in the top-left corner, the process was successful.

The passkey will lock down your account both when you sign-in, as well as anytime you try to access critical system settings.

Delete Your Passkey

Thankfully, deleting your passkey is even easier than getting it set up. In the Security tab, simply find the button that reads “Delete My Passkey”, and it will be reset back to stock.

What to Do If You Forgot Your Passkey

If you forgot your passkey and need to reset it to get back into your console, you’ll need to know the Microsoft account password that you used to register the console when it was first set up.

To reset the passkey, access the passkey entry prompt and enter the wrong key three times.

The Xbox will take you to a a keyboard, where you can enter your Microsoft account’s password.

Once you successfully enter your Microsoft password, you’ll be asked if you want to make a new passkey, or leave it alone for now.

If you keep a password on your gaming PC or household desktop, there’s no reason why your Xbox One shouldn’t get the same level of security too. The passkey feature makes it easy to protect your own profile, while also swapping between others with just a few quick presses on your controller.

All modern gaming platforms are fully featured media devices, capable of accessing games, music, videos, and websites of all kinds. Limit mature content and block or limit access to the Xbox One by using a Microsoft Family Group.

How to Restrict Apps, Games, and Media On Xbox One

In order to block specific apps or games by rating, you’ll want to create a free Microsoft Family Group to give your child their own free Microsoft account. This child account offers additional controls for Windows 10, and can be used to create an easy-to-manage child profile on your Xbox One.

Once you’ve created the child account, navigate any browser to your Microsoft Family Group. Scroll down to find the account for which you want to set content restrictions. Open the “More Options” drop-down menu and select “Content Restrictions.”

You can automatically block all apps and media based on age rating by setting the appropriate age for this child account. To do this, use the “Allow Apps And Games Rated For” drop-down menu under “Apps, Games, & Media.” Select the age you find appropriate for this account; remember that this will apply to all content for this user across any Xbox One, Windows 10 PC, or Android device running Microsoft Launcher. You can see more details about ratings for different kinds of media by clicking on the “View Allowed Ratings” link.

Under these age restrictions, you can view which apps or games have been allowed or blocked. Once you set an age rating, you’ll need to manually approve any apps and games the child account tries to download that exceed the age range that you’ve set. You can grant this approval either directly through your Microsoft Family Group or through the email alert that you’ll receive whenever this child account attempts to access a restricted app or game.

You can find any outstanding requests on the front page of your Microsoft Family Group. Click “Approve” or “Deny” as desired. You can learn more about the app or game in question by clicking on its title.

If you want to block an app or game that was downloaded previously, you can block it from the “Activity” tab of your Microsoft Family Group.

How to Restrict Web Browsing On Xbox One

Using a Microsoft Family Group child account to block access to web content will apply settings to any device that this account logs into, including your Xbox One, Windows 10, and any Android devices that use Microsoft Launcher.

To block websites for a child account, find the account you want to regulate in your Microsoft Family Group dashboard, select “More Options,” and click “Content Restrictions.”

Scroll down to the “Web Browsing” section and make sure that the “Block Inappropriate Websites” toggle is activated.

You can view all blocked or allowed websites in the expandable menus below. If you want to always block or allow a particular website, enter that website URL into the appropriate box and click the plus (+) icon. If you want to block all websites except those listed under “Always Allowed,” make sure that the “Only Allow These Websites” box is checked.

Whether you’re trying to keep sensitive eyes away from explicit content or just want to set more precise boundaries for the apps and games used on the Xbox One in your home, Microsoft Family Groups can provide transparent reliable controls that do just that.

Each parent makes different decisions about what games his or her children play and the movies they watch. If you’re worried about your kids making that decision without your input, you might want to investigate the Xbox 360 parental controls. The parental control system blocks access to material rated beyond certain limits by requiring a password. This way, you can watch any movie of any rating yourself and give permission for specific movies or games.

Keep these two important rules in mind about Xbox 360 parental controls:

• Settings apply to the console, not to individual profiles. Restrictions apply to absolutely anyone who uses your Xbox 360 console, including you.

You can access any material if you know the code, but you must enter that code every time.

• If you lose your code, all is not lost.

When you set the pass code, you also set a pass code reset question/answer (for example, “What is your favorite color?”). If the parent fails to correctly enter the pass code when trying to enter the Console Settings area, he or she can enter the answer for the reset question to clear and then re-create a new pass code. If the parent forgets the new pass code, too, then he or she can call customer support to get the console-specific reset code that clears the Flash settings. Clearing the pass code doesn’t erase profiles, saved games, downloaded content, or any other vital info.

When creating your pass code, don’t pick a pass code reset question that your children know the answer to (like, “What is your pet’s name?”).

To get started with parental controls, follow these steps:

1. Open the Xbox Dashboard.

If you aren’t already in the Dashboard, you can get to it by starting the Xbox 360 without a game or movie in the DVD drive or by ejecting the current disc. You can also get to the Dashboard by pressing the Xbox Guide button on your controller or remote and then pressing the Y button when the Guide appears.

2. Choose the System blade with the controller.

3. Choose the Family Settings option.

4. Choose the Console Settings option.

The console settings apply to the entire Xbox 360, not just a specific user.

By default, the console settings give you full access to Xbox 360 features and content:

• You can play any game.

• You can watch any movie DVD.

• You have access to Xbox Live.

• You don’t need a pass code to change any of the settings.

Picking a code

If you modify a parent control, you must set a pass code. Follow these steps to do so:

1. Access the Console Settings screen.

The preceding section tells you how to access this screen.

2. Choose the Set Pass Code menu option.

You’re prompted to enter a four-button pass code, as you can see in Figure 1.

3. Press any Xbox 360 controller button or pull a trigger.

4. Select a pass code reset question and then enter its answer.

This question and answer helps you if you ever forget your pass code. See Figure 2.

If you forget your pass code, you can reset it by using your reset question.

Movies

The Console Settings screen offers the DVD Movie Ratings option, which in turn lists movie ratings. Those ratings match the ratings system in your country. (See Figure 3.)

The ability to block movies based on their rating depends on that rating being encoded onto the DVD. Most DVDs sold in the United States and Canada are rating-coded, but a particular movie (or a pirated copy of almost any movie) might not have the proper information encoded. A disc without rating information isn’t blocked.

Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings, such as G for General, are used in the United States and Canada.

Setting a limit in the Console Settings screen means that one or both of the following screens show up when you insert a DVD movie that exceeds your specified rating:

• A dialog box from the DVD itself: Says that your DVD player (the Xbox 360) has parental controls running and gives you the option to stop playing the DVD (kicking you out to the Dashboard).

• An Xbox 360 slide-out dialog box: Appears along the side of the screen and prompts you to enter the pass code.

The movie plays normally if you enter the code; otherwise, you end up back at the Dashboard.

Games

Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings control game access in the parent control options. Follow these steps to restrict access to games of a certain level or above:

1. Access the Console Settings screen.

2. Choose Game Ratings.

Game Ratings is the first option on the Console Settings screen. When you select it, a list of ratings appears.

3. Choose the allowed ratings.

4. Press the A button to accept your settings.

There’s nothing like killing zombies in Dead Rising 3 on your new Xbox One . The violent video game is just one of a handful of launch titles that is available alongside Microsoft’s new console.

While Dead Rising 3 (which was recently banned in Germany) and titles like it will offer you hours of endless and violent entertainment, they may not be games you want your kids playing.

Like Sony with the PlayStation 4 , Microsoft has included various parental controls that can prevent your kids from accessing certain games and features on the Xbox One.

Setup

From the console’s main menu, click on Games & Apps, scroll over to Settings, and select Privacy & Online Safety. This page will give you a variety of options for customizing your Xbox One experience, including settings for controlling your privacy and restricting inappropriate games or features.

The Xbox One’s settings can also be accessed by tapping the menu button, which is represented with three horizontal lines, on the controller.

Privacy

Three default options are available — child, teen, and adult — for controlling privacy settings

The child defaults allow children to play and download free games, music, videos, and apps, along with making video game clips. This setting also lets kids see other profiles and communicate with friends, however a parent is required to add a new friend. Other gamers can also see when the child is online and available to play.

In addition to the child defaults, teens can see and share Kinect content, add friends, socialize in multiplayer games, and share to social networks.

The adult setting allows everyone to see your friends, game clips, and any musics, apps, and games you’ve enjoyed. The setting also lets others see your full profile, in addition to being notified when you come online.

All three defaults can be used as a base and customized to your liking. You can also start from scratch and create your own privacy settings.

By default, Microsoft uses your video app history to improve your experience. The company also stores your exercise information with your online profile. While there doesn’t appear to be a way to disable this, Microsoft notes that the information is kept private and not shared with others.

Content Restrictions

The Content Restrictions settings can be found on the right-hand side of the Privacy & Online Safety menu. From here you can restrict access to content, features, and more. The menu consists of four options: Access to content, Web filtering, Descriptions in OneGuide, and Contact preferences.

Restrictions for games, music, movies, and apps can be found in the “Access to content” option. Unlike Sony, which uses a confusing number scale to prevent certain features, Microsoft allows content to be restricted based on age. The system can be configured to allow only appropriate content from ages 3 to 18; there is also an unrestricted option for the older crowd.

Once the restriction is set, check the “Hide listings in search, stores, and apps” box to prevent inappropriate content from appearing in search results or the Xbox Store.

The Web browser can be filtered to only allow only sites you previously approved, sites designed for children, general interest pages, access to social networks and mail services, or to simply warn on adult sites.

To block “explicitly sexual, violent or otherwise objectionable” descriptions while browsing through channels, click on the “Descriptions in OneGuide” option.

Inside of the Contact preferences you can opt-out of promotional offers from Microsoft, Xbox, and its partners.

Passkey

You must create a passkey to fully implement parental controls. Enter the settings, select the “Sign-in, Security, and Passkey” option, and create a new 6-digit passkey.

Once completed, you will have the option to require the key for signing into the system and when purchasing items from the Xbox Store. The console will also require the key to Microsoft Xbox One be entered to allow your kids to add friends or play certain games, depending on the parental settings you opted for.

You can set Microsoft Store to require a password when you make purchases. This helps prevent you (or anyone sharing your device) from buying something accidentally. You can also use your Xbox One console to require a password for purchases.

To require a password for purchases, using a PC or mobile device that has Windows 11:

Turn off Purchase sign-in.

Repeat these steps for each device you share.

Do you, like so many others, bristle at the thought of your child exploring the great unknown of The Internet unsupervised? If so, you are in luck, because managing your children’s access to certain content is a simple matter on Xbox One.

On this page, we’ll show you how to:

• Find the Family Settings menu
• Modify login information
• Create a Family Group
• Add adult or child accounts to your Family Group
• Adjust or restrict access to certain levels of content
• Create a Guest Key, to enable access for visitors
• Adjust security settings for your account

From anywhere on your Xbox One, press the Xbox button towards the top of your Xbox One controller to bring up the dashboard menu. Scroll right until you reach the System column, then scroll down to Settings.

Open the Settings menu and select the Account section, then navigate right to Family Settings. Once you’ve opened the Family Settings menu, you’ll have access to four sub-categories:

• My Sign-In, Security & Passkey: Determine how easy it is to use, and make purchases on, your your primary account.
• Manage Family Members: Create accounts for family members, import existing accounts, and modify permissions for those accounts.
• Family On The Web: Create a Family Group and modify settings using the Xbox One internet web browser.
• Signed-Out Content Restrictions: Determine which content can be accessed when no users are signed in.

By selecting the Sign-In, Security & Passkey menu, you can modify sign-in options for your primary account. You can determine whether your console will automatically sign-in to a particular account on startup, whether a passkey is required to make content purchases, whether Kinect can automatically sign you in when it detects your presence, whether your email address will be shown on the Home screen, and even cause specific Xbox One controllers to automatically login to specific user accounts.

Once in the Family Settings menu, select Manage Family Members, then select Add To Family. At this point, you can select a frequently-used account which has been already been downloaded to this Xbox One, or select Add New to add an existing Microsoft or Xbox account to your console, or create a brand new account.

After selecting Add New, enter the corresponding email address, phone number, or even Skype login information to add the account for your Family Group.

Once the account has been added, you can modify permissions, remove accounts from your Xbox, or remove accounts from your Family Group in the Manage Family Members menu.

By selecting Signed-Out Content Restrictions, you can determine which content can be viewed when no user accounts are signed in. If you have young players around who don’t have their own accounts, and you’d like to set restrictions on the content they can access, this is the place to do it.

To restrict access to content when no users are signed in, you must first create a Guest Key. A Guest Key can be used to bypass content restrictions without signing in to an Xbox account, so it’s a perfect way to grant house guests (or frequent visitors) access to your Xbox, without giving them the password (and purchasing power) of your own Xbox profile.

Once you have created a Guest Key, you can determine whether to allow users to create new accounts or download existing accounts from other Xbox One consoles, which could be used to allow users to view restricted content.

By selecting Access To Content, you’ll have the option to restrict all content from being viewed when no user profiles are signed in, allow all content, or a number of options which cater restrictions to content appropriate for every age between 3 to 18.

Video game systems have come a long way since I was a kid. Now they are basically computers with full access to the world-wide web, which is why parents need to understand how they work.

As a starting point, we recommend having some controls on your home router to block inappropriate content even before you turn on your gaming system. You might look into Open DNS, which is a free filtering service for your home’s router. This, in addition to a few parental controls we’ll explain below, provides a decent double-layer of protection against inappropriate content.

So what about protecting the Xbox One device itself?

Parents, I’m going to start out by saying that Microsoft doesn’t make this easy. There are numerous steps required in order to set up parental controls, but we’re going to do our best to show you step-by-step how it’s done.

Create Microsoft accounts for you and your child if they don’t already exist, and sign in to yours.

• Go to xbox.com and click “Sign In” in the upper right corner.
  • If you already have a Microsoft account, you can sign in here.
  • If you don’t, go to “No account? Create one!” where you’ll click, and walk through the account set-up steps. You’ll be asked to verify the e-mail address you used to create the account, so go to your e-mail account, and click “Verify [with your e-mail address].” This will sign you in automatically to xbox.com and assign you a random gamertag and profile image, which you can change in the “Customize Profile” option.
• If your child has not already created an Xbox account, sign out of your Xbox account and follow the exact same steps to create one for them.

Once you’ve created their account, or if they already have an account, it’s time to add them to your family.

• From xbox.com, click on your profile picture in the upper right corner, and click “Xbox Settings.”
• In the left menu, click “Microsoft Family,” and then you’ll see a blue button for “Add a child.” At the prompt, type in the e-mail address of the child.
• Now, type the e-mail address your child used to create their account into the box, and click “Sign my child in.” You’ll be prompted for a password, and click “Sign In,” and then click “Yes” on the “Join family as a child” page. This will take you to a page where you can see the individuals in the same “Family.”
• From here, click on the name and profile icon in the upper right corner. Click “Sign in with another account” and sign back in to your parent account.
• Click “Products” in the menu, “Devices & Xbox,” and then “Xbox & Games.” This will take you back to the Xbox homepage you remember from before.
• Click on your profile in the upper right corner, and select “Xbox Settings.” This will take you back to the Settings page you remember from before.
• Click “Privacy & Online Safety.” You may be asked to enter a security code.
• Here you should see your own profile and all your children. If you use an Xbox 360, you can go through the different options for “Privacy” or “Xbox One Online Safety” here as well. Go through the different privacy and online options carefully. You might even use each of these discussion points with your son or daughter, explaining the reasons why you are leaving certain functionality on or turning things off. Remember, open and honest conversation is so important.

Finally, enable content filtering directly through the gaming system itself.

On the Xbox One console:

• Scroll left on the home screen to open the guide.
• Select “Settings.”
• Select “All Settings.”
• Under Account, select “Family.”
• Select the child account that you want to add web filters to.
• Select “Web Filtering” from the options.
• Select the current setting to view all the available options.
• Select the desired level of web filtering. Note specific websites can only be added to the “Allow” list in the Family section of your Microsoft account.

Xbox is releasing a new console in December 2016, the Xbox One S, which I’m sure will be a popular Christmas gift. With up to 2TB of memory, unbelievable image quality, and the ability to stream anything, it’s a reminder for parents that understanding these gaming devices is critical in any internet safe home.

Apple doesn’t have an official method for individually locking sensitive apps like Photos with a passcode, but luckily there’s a workaround that was introduced with the Screen Time feature that first came out in iOS 12.

If you really want to make sure one of your apps is inaccessible, you can use Apple’s App Limits feature to do so. Here’s how:

1. Open up the Settings app.
2. Choose “Screen Time.”
3. Make sure Screen Time is enabled and a Screen Time passcode is set by choosing the “Use Screen Time Passcode” option
4. Tap on App Limits and Tap on the Add Limit option.
5. Choose the category that you want. If you want to lock the ‌Photos‌ app, it’s in the “Creativity” category.
6. Tap on the app that you’ve picked and then tap Next.
7. At the slider where you select the time, choose 1 minute.
8. Tap on Add.
9. Toggle on “Block at End of Limit.”
10. If you want to add additional apps, go through the “Add Limit” steps again. Otherwise, exit the Screen Time interface.

When the time limit that you’ve set expires, you’ll be told you’ve run out of time. You can continue to use the app for one minute, but after that, you’ll need to enter your Screen Time passcode to continue to use the app.

There is no way around the passcode, which prevents anyone who has access to your iPhone from opening up and using the app that’s been passcode blocked.

How to Use a Locked App

Once you have App Limits in place to lock apps you want to be inaccessible, you can tap on “Ask for More Time” to access the app. You’ll need to put in your passcode, and then once you do, you can unlock it for 15 minutes, an hour, or the rest of the day. There’s no way to immediately lock it again after approving it for 15 minutes without redoing the entire App Limit setup, so keep that in mind.

Limitations

You can passcode lock any app on your phone except for the Phone app. There is no option to turn off access to the Phone app at all. For apps like Messages or FaceTime, you need to edit the “Always Allowed” section of Screen Time to remove them for the limit to be enabled.

You can disable access to Messages and ‌FaceTime‌, but you might not want to. When access to Messages is disabled via App Limits, devices using iCloud for Screen Time are not able to send or receive messages during downtime. You’re also not able to see notifications for apps that are locked, so keep that in mind when locking down social networking apps.

In today’s climate, the security of your online accounts is extremely important. With hackers constantly finding new ways to compromise individuals’ personal data, it is important that you regularly update your passwords, even for your gaming consoles.

When you sign up for Xbox services, most notably Xbox Live, you have to set up a Microsoft account. If you feel your personal information has been compromised, you should consider changing your password for your Xbox One.

How to change your Xbox One password using your console

1. Turn on your Xbox One console and open the Microsoft Edge browser and head to login.live.com.

2. Enter your email and current password. Then, click on your profile picture located on the top of the screen and click “Edit Profile.”

3. On the next page, hover your cursor over “Change Password,” and below it click “Change.”

4. Confirm your current password and then enter and re-enter your new password. Make sure to remember or write down your new password for safekeeping. To change your password, click “Save” and your new password will be effective immediately.

How to change your Xbox One password using your computer, smartphone, or tablet

1. Turn on your device and head to the Microsoft Account login page in your browser.

2. Login by entering your email and current password. Then, click on the “Security” tab at the top of the screen.

3. Click the “Change my password” button in the “Password security” box.

4. Follow the prompts, then on the “Change your password” page confirm your current password and enter and re-enter your new password. Make sure to remember or write down your new password for safekeeping. To change your password, click “Save” and your new password will be effective immediately.

If you want to take your security a step further, you can set up an Xbox One passkey and ensure no unwanted guests can log in to your console.

If you want to set up Xbox parental controls, the easiest way is to do so via the Xbox Family Settings app. It takes a little setup but it means you can keep a close eye on what your children are doing online, as well as set Xbox time limits. Here’s how to do it.

On your smartphone, download the Xbox Family Settings app from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Open the app and sign into your Xbox/Microsoft account.

Tap Add Family Member.

Tap Create a child account or Invite Someone to add an existing Microsoft or Xbox network account to your Xbox family.

If you need to create a child account, you will need to enter an email address and password. You may also need to create an Xbox profile for them.

Once you’ve added them, tap on their profile name to begin adding restrictions.

Enter the age of your child so that the Xbox Family Settings app automatically suggests age-appropriate content restrictions.

If you want to change some of the settings for your child such as set a cap on how long they’re allowed to play games on their Xbox, it’s simple to do through the app. Here’s how.

Open the Xbox Family Settings app.

Tap the name of your child’s profile.

Tap the child’s Settings.

Scroll down to Screen Time and tap it.

Tap under Time Range to adjust how long your child can use their Xbox on any day.

On your Xbox One, you can add a passkey to your console and protect it from kids trying to alter parental control settings, grant access to certain content for children on a per-case basis, and prevent unauthorized purchases.

Hit the Xbox logo to open the guide, and head to your Settings page. Select All Settings, then Account, then Sign in, security, and passkey. Enter a passkey using the Xbox One controller buttons, and take comfort in knowing no one can get into your account without your permission.

You should also add two-factor authentication to your Microsoft account—the one connected to your Xbox One. It’s easy to do in your browser. Visit Xbox.com (or Microsoft.com), log in to your account, select your user icon, and click View Microsoft Account. Select Security from the menu bar, then click “More security options” below the Security Basics section. From there, you can enable two-factor authentication using an app like Authy or Google Authenticator.

On your PS4, visit Settings, Login Settings, uncheck “Log in to PS4 Automatically” and then select Passcode Management. There, you can use the buttons on your DualShock 4 controller to enter a passcode tied to the buttons you press (think of it like a game of Simon Says, except you’re Simon). Set your passcode and boom, instant layer of security you can remember using muscle memory (but you should probably write it down where you are storing your PSN ID password information).

Xbox One has free built-in parental controls that you can use to keep track of what video game your kids are playing and how long they’re spending each day playing on the console.

These child monitoring features can also limit the types of Xbox video games that they can buy and play in addition to placing restrictions on some online web browsing. To set up parental controls, parents much create an Xbox account for each of their kids, which includes disclosing their ages.

Once a child turns 18 (in the U.S.) Xbox considers them an adult and automatically removes all limitations. You cannot monitor an adult’s account.

Here’s everything you need to know before letting kids play their first video game on an Xbox One console.

Managing a Child’s Xbox Account With Family Settings

Microsoft provides a free service for families that allow parents to monitor and place limits on a child’s account on Xbox One consoles.

To use this service, at least one parent must first log in with their own Xbox or Microsoft account on the Xbox One console.

Xbox and Microsoft accounts are exactly the same thing. If you have an account that you use for Skype, Outlook, or some other Microsoft-owned service, you can log into an Xbox with it.

After this is done, they can then invite their child’s account to become part of the family group. Once they’re added, you’ll be able to limit their play time, what sort of games they can play, and their ability to purchase new titles.

If you’ve already set up Windows 10 Parental Controls with your child, you don’t need to do anything further. You can manage their Xbox One gaming from the same control panel. Remember, Xbox and Microsoft accounts are the same.

How to Add a Child to a Family Group on Xbox One

Have your child sign in to their account on the Xbox One as usual.

It’s possible that they may already be signed in. You can check if they are by checking the user list in the far-left pane of the Guide which can be opened by pressing the Xbox logo button on your controller.

Sign into your account on the Xbox One console.

The Xbox One allows multiple users to be logged in at the same time. Do not log anyone out.

Press the Xbox logo on your controller to open the Guide.

Scroll to the far-right pane and highlight Settings. Press A on your controller.

From the Account settings page, highlight Family settings and press A.

An option called Add a child should appear at the bottom of the menu. Highlight it and press A.

If the option to Add a child doesn’t appear, it’s likely that your child’s account has been registered as an adult account. This can happen when the date of birth entered during the signup process places them over the age of 18.

It is impossible to revert an adult account to a child account after it’s been set up. Even if you manually change the date of birth in the account settings. The only solution for this problem is to create an entirely new account from scratch.

Select your child’s account and press A once again.

You’ll be presented with a confirmation screen. Highlight Add to family and press A.

Xbox One Child Account Options

Once the child’s account has been added to your family on the Xbox One, you can manage almost every aspect of the account by going to Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members and exploring each of these three sections.

• Privacy & online safety: This section will have options for controlling what games and apps they can download and play, whether they can show that they’re online to others, the display options for their real name, and app privacy features.
• Access to content: This setting lets you add age restrictions on rated games and other media. For example, you can restrict their account to accessing content appropriate for 12 year olds only.

Introduction: How to Make a Simple Passcode Door in Minecraft

Hello, and thanks for viewing my first instructable! I will show you how to make a passcode door in minecraft or minecraft PE.

Step 1: Materials

You will need to gather some materials. If you’re having trouble reading the signs, they say: 15 frame blocks, 6 blocks to place the levers on, 6 levers, 3 signs, redstone (the amount depends), redstone repeater (optional), and redstone torch (also depends), 1 iron door, and 7 of any block (dirt or stone is probably best).

Step 2: Make a Door Frame

For this step, all you have to do is make the frame for the door. Use the picture as a guide if you are confused.

Step 3: Make an Extension

Go out four blocks on the side and then place a block above and below the fourth one. It should look like the picture. (You may have a different frame block)

Step 4: Place the Levers

This step is as simple as placing the blocks you chose to place the levers on, and then placing the levers on them. I used wood, which I think looks pretty good to place the levers on.

Step 5: Label the Levers

In this step, place your 3 signs to label the levers.

Step 6: Back Extension

For this step, go to the back and place 6 of your 7 any blocks just like this. you should still be able to see the blocks the levers are placed on.

Step 7: Choose Your Passcode

This step is a little tricky. Place redstone torches ONLY on the back of the blocks you want to be the passcode. Example: I have redstone torches on the back of 3 and 6 in the picture, which means to open the door, I need to pull down the levers labeled 3 and 6. You’ll see this in the picture for the last step.

Step 8: Place Redstone

This step is also a little tricky. Place redstone on every block on top of and below the 6 any blocks. You can’t place redstone where there are redstone torches, but every other block must have redstone. If you’re still confused, imagine this. You placed 6 blocks on the back. You should have placed the redstone torches on the back of the blocks that are connected to the levers you want to be the passcode. Now imagine you can only place redstone above and below the 6 any blocks. Place redstone on every block you can. This means try placing 6 on top of the any blocks. You might be able to have 6 if your redstone torches are on the bottom. Do the same thing to the bottom.

Step 9: Connection of Redstone.

In this step, connect all the redstone you placed in the last step. The picture should be of help.

Step 10: Dig a Hole

In this step, dig a hole leading to 2 blocks below where your door will be. Use the picture for reference. If you dig a longer hole, you may need a redstone repeater.

Step 11: The Last Redstone Torch

This step is also a little tricky. Place a block with a redstone torch on it. The redstone torch should be directly below where your door will be.

Step 12: Trail of Redstone

In this step, make a trail of redstone leading to the block with the redstone torch on it. You may need a repeater.

Step 13: Place the Door

In this step, all you have to do is place a frame block above the redstone torch and place the iron door on it.

Step 14: Final Testing

To finish, test your door by putting in the code. If it doesn’t work, make sure the redstone torches are in the right place.

A missing power cord should give the hint that he doesn’t want his Xbox to be messed with. I mean if that were me I would just tell the guy to not touch my stuff or put it in my room.

Yeah. I mean. if you take the power cord, then he’ll know you’re purposely trying to prevent him from getting on it. Depending on how he is, this could anger him and he could possibly inflict harm to the Xbox.

The default passcode setting in iOS 7 only allows for a 4-digit numeric string, otherwise known as a simple passcode. But when you’re really serious about device security — or just want to be extra sure no one finds out about your Taylor Swift app or questionable weekend photos — iOS 7 offers more complex passcode protection.

With a complex passcode, you can pick a passcode that includes letters, numbers, and special characters. What’s more, a complex passcode can be much longer than just four characters. In iOS 6, the string limit was 37 characters long. But in iOS 7 I was able to enter in over 90 characters without receiving a warning about having too long of a passcode. This makes the task of guessing another’s passcode exponentially more difficult.

Time to get started.

To set a passcode that can include numbers, letters, and special characters, go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock. If you’ve grown weary of Touch ID and would like to do this on an iPhone 5s, it’s listed under Settings > General > Touch ID & Passcode.

Next, simply toggle off the “Simple Passcode” setting. If you haven’t set up a passcode at all yet, you’ll first have to select the “Turn Passcode On” option located near the top of the settings pane.

Upon doing so, you will be prompted to enter a complex passcode with the ability to choose from an array of numbers, letters, and special characters. You’ll be prompted to enter the passcode twice, the first time you tap ‘Next’ to continue and the second time you tap ‘Done.’

While you can insert special characters like ñ or é in a complex passcode, you unfortunately cannot use emoji icons. Which is a damn shame because a passcode like this would be pretty cool.

As is always the case, it’s important to make sure that your passcode is hard for others to guess but easy for you to remember.

After setting up a complex passcode, your new passcode lock screen will look like this, offering up a full text-and-number keyboard for your passcode entry.

Is a Complex Passcode even necessary?

With a 4-digit numeric passcode, there are potentially 10^4 (10,000) different passcode options. That sure seems like a lot, but a study on common iOS passwords reveals that many people still rely on passcodes that aren’t terribly hard to guess. Some common passcodes to avoid include 1234, 0000, 2580, 1111, 5555 and 5683 (which spells out ‘love’). Also try and avoid passcodes that represent (easy to guess) birth years such as 1949, 1985, and 1999.

When using a complex passcode, however, the number of possible passcode combinations increases exponentially. With about 77 characters (numbers+letters+special characters) to choose from, and a passcode that can be as long as 50 characters (at least), that’s already 77^50 possible permutations right there, making it effectively impossible for anyone to ever guess your passcode without peering over your shoulder. Even opting for a slightly longer 6 character passcode increases the number of possible passcode combinations from 10,000 to 208.4 billion (77^6).

1. Create a user profile. To start, make sure that your child already has a Microsoft account. You can create one on the fly, but Tom’s Guide found that it was much easier to start with an existing user. (Check out our guide for more information.)

2. Add user to family. Once you’re ready, venture to the home screen on your Xbox One, and make sure you’re signed in as yourself (not your child).

From here, click on Manage games and apps.

Scroll over to Family, and select Add to Family.

Click on your child’s account (or Add New if he or she isn’t already registered on your device).

3. Accept Microsoft’s privacy statement. On the next screen, click Next to continue, or Privacy Statement if you want more information about Microsoft’s privacy policies.

4. Set parental controls. This screen represents the meat and potatoes of the Xbox One’s parental controls. There are three types of content restrictions: Access to content and apps, Web filtering and descriptions in OneGuide.

Under Access to content and apps, you can choose Child Defaults, Teen Defaults, Adult Defaults or Custom.

Clicking Custom will offer a wealth of options, and you’ll have to scroll to the right to see them all. There are too many possible protocols to list here, but you’ll be able to control whether your kids can purchase content, use Skype, access social networks or share their information with friends or random players online.

Web filtering is much simpler: You can select one of six filtering systems, which range from Designed for Children, which only allows kid-friendly sites, to Warned on Adult, which displays warnings on adult content but does not block it.

OneGuide descriptions are a simple yes-or-no protocol: If you have your Xbox One plugged into a cable box, your kids can either use the Xbox One to read program descriptions, or they can’t. Program descriptions can sometimes include sexual or violent content, so choose wisely.

With these tools at your disposal, you can ensure that each member of your household has an Xbox One experience suited to his or her needs. Even better, unlike PS4 sub-accounts, which stay linked to a parent’s account in perpetuity, Xbox One accounts can be delinked once a child is ready to fly the coop.
