Resend a gift

If the recipient can’t find the email with the redeem button, you can resend the gift.

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap your name.
3. Tap Media & Purchases, then tap View Account.
4. Sign in with your Apple ID.
5. Tap Gifts.
6. Tap the gift that you want to resend.
7. Make sure that the recipient’s email is spelled correctly. If you need to edit the recipient’s email address, tap their email address, then tap it again and enter the correct address.
8. Tap Resend Gift. If you don’t see Resend Gift, it has already been redeemed.

How to resend a gift from your computer

1. Open the Music app. Or if you’re on a PC, open iTunes.
2. From the menu bar, choose Account > View My Account. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.
3. The Account Information page appears. Scroll to the Purchase History section and click Manage Gifts.
4. Click Edit next to the gift that you want to resend.
5. Make sure that the recipient’s email is spelled correctly. If you need to edit the recipient’s email address, click the email address, then make changes.
6. Click Resend Gift.

If there’s an issue when you send a gift

• The recipient of your gift must have an Apple ID in your country or region. For example, if you’re in the United States, you can’t send a gift to a friend who lives in Australia.
• In some regions, you can’t send gifts. Store availability also varies by country or region. Learn what’s available in your country or region.
• If you’re using Family Sharing and Ask To Buy is turned on for your account, you can’t purchase gifts.
• You can’t gift individual songs on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. To gift a song, use your Mac or PC.
• You can’t gift apps, TV shows, or movies on a Mac or PC. To gift those items, use an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
• You can’t gift a free app or item. But you can tap the Share button or the arrow button to share a link to the app or item.

Cancel a gift

If you want to cancel a gift, you can contact Apple Support up to two days before scheduled delivery.

The ACCC is warning people to be on the lookout for scammers who are trying to con their victims into paying for scams with Apple iTunes gift cards.

During 2017 to date, reports to the ACCC’s Scamwatch show 1236 people lost nearly $540,000 to scammers using gift cards as payments.

This is a growing trend: in the 2015-16 financial year losses were about $480,000.

“Scammers are increasingly getting their victims to pay with iTunes gift cards as they can quickly on-sell them and pocket the money,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.

“If someone asks you to pay for anything using an iTunes gift card, it is a scam. There are never any circumstances where a legitimate business or government department will ask for payment this way.”

Apple’s website clearly states iTunes gift cards can only be used to purchase goods and services on the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or for an Apple Music membership.

Reports to Scamwatch show there are three common scam examples the ACCC is currently seeing where scammers are demanding iTunes gift cards as payment:

• Tax scams – the scammer pretends to be from the Australian Taxation Office and claim there is a warrant out for their victim’s arrest. If the victim doesn’t pay an immediate ‘fine’ using iTunes gift cards, the scammer claims police will come and handcuff them.
• Catch-a-hacker scam – scammers pretending to be Telstra will ask their victim to help them catch a ‘hacker’ who’s trying to get into their PC or smart devices. They’ll use this sham story to get the victim to buy iTunes cards as a ‘trap’ for catching the hacker. Unfortunately the scammer will quickly get the serial numbers for those gift cards and sell them before the victim realises they’ve been duped.
• Centrelink scams – the scammer pretends to be from Centrelink and tells their victim they’re entitled to an additional payment, such as for their pension, and that they need to pay a ‘release fee’ in iTunes gift cards to receive the payment.

The scammers will get their victims to travel to a business where iTunes gift cards are sold, such as a supermarket or department store, and get them to purchase amounts sometimes worth thousands of dollars.

Businesses that sell iTunes gift cards are encouraged to inform their staff about these scams so that they can help warn customers and even question any customers spending large amounts of money on iTunes gift cards.

“The scammers are very persistent once they have a victim hooked and will, for example, keep their victim on the phone while they’re in a store buying the gift cards. Once a victim has bought the card, the scammer will get them to quickly read the serial number on the back—it’s this information they use to then on-sell the gift card,” Ms Rickard said.

“If you pay for a scammer’s con with iTunes gift cards it’s nearly impossible to get your money back. Don’t ever believe the scammer’s lies, no matter how convincing they sound—hang up on their calls and delete their emails immediately.”

People targeted by scammers asking for iTunes gift cards as payment can report the scam to Scamwatch.

Whether you use an iPhone or iPad to manage business content on the go or use an iPod to stream music in the office, the iTunes prepaid card is an ideal gift for iOS device users who download apps, music, e-books and other media content. Depending on your preference, you can redeem the gift card through the iTunes software on your PC or directly on the phone using the App Store or iTunes app. After you redeem the card, the money is applied to your Apple account automatically and can be used to purchase any content available in the store.

Using a Computer

Launch iTunes. If you don’t have iTunes installed on your PC, download the file from Apple’s official site and install the software (see link in Resources).

Click the “iTunes Store” button.

Scroll to the iTunes Store navigation pane at the bottom of the screen, and then click the “Redeem” link in the Manage section.

Enter your Apple ID and password, and then click the “Sign In” button. If you don’t have an Apple ID, click the “Create Apple ID” button and register for a free account.

Enter the gift card code in the blank Code field, and then click the “Redeem” button. The amount on the gift card will be applied automatically to your Apple account.

Browse through the media content available in the iTunes Store by clicking the tabs at the top of the screen such as Music, Apps, Movies or Books.

Select the content you want to purchase by clicking the dollar amount associated with the item.

Enter your Apple ID password and then click “Buy” to purchase the content. The amount of the item you purchased is deducted from your account automatically.

Using an iOS Device

Tap iTunes on the Home screen to purchase music with the gift card. To purchase an app for your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, tap the App Store icon.

Tap the “Music” icon if you’re using the iTunes app, and then scroll to the bottom of the page and tap “Redeem.” If you’re in the App Store, tap the “Featured” button, and then scroll to the bottom of the page and tap “Redeem.”

Enter the iTunes gift card code in the blank field, and then tap the “Redeem” button. If necessary, enter your Apple ID and password. After you redeem the gift card, the amount is applied to your Apple account automatically.

iTunes is Apple’s marketplace for all sorts of media, software, and entertainment. If you’ve been given an iTunes gift card, you can use it to purchase apps, books, music, movies, and more.

Note that with the release of macOS Catalina, Apple has removed iTunes in favor of individual apps, such as Apple Music and Apple Books. iTunes is still available on Windows, as well as individual apps on iOS.

What Is an iTunes Gift Card?

An iTunes gift card (usually labeled as an App Store & iTunes card) is pre-purchased credit for Apple’s various digital services. This includes the iTunes Store—Apple’s media and software marketplace where you can buy music, movies, apps, and more. You can also use iTunes gift cards to subscribe to Apple Music and other Apple services.

Be aware that iTunes gift cards are different than Apple Store gift cards. Apple Store gift cards let you purchase physical Apple products, like an iPhone or MacBook, at Apple’s physical or online stores.

iTunes gift cards are available as physical cards, as well as digital codes delivered via email. The gift card don’t expire, and once the credit is applied to your account, it won’t expire either.

You can only redeem your card in the same iTunes Store from which it was purchased. Thus, a US gift card is only good in the US App Store.

How to Buy an iTunes Gift Card

You can buy an iTunes gift card in the following ways:

• At the Apple Store online.
• On an iPhone or iPad: Launch the App Store app, tap your user icon, then choose Send Gift Card by Email.
• Using a Mac running macOS Catalina or higher: open the Music app, click iTunes Store in the sidebar, and choose Send Gift.
• On older versions of macOS or a Windows PC with iTunes: Click the Store tab, then choose Send Gift.

The credits can be used for payments on Apple products and accessories, or for intangibles such as apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and even to pay for iCloud storage. The way it works is similar to other gift cards, but it can be helpful to get a few tips in advance to make the process easier.

Apple used to be strictly a computer company, making hardware only, but it quickly expanded into software. Over the years, laptop computers, monitors, and a whole range of mobile devices followed. Apple has also expanded as a cloud service, with five gigabytes of iCloud storage for file and photo storage coming bundled for free with any iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer purchase. Additional storage is available on a subscription basis, as well as subscription options for Apple Music, TV Plus, and streaming services. The latest is Fitness Plus, which integrates with the Apple Watch to provide heart rate and calories burned on-screen along with a workout instructor.

An Apple gift card makes it easy for owners of Apple devices to start a new subscription or add to an existing one, making the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad more useful. For those new to Apple, a gift card can be used to buy Apple accessories and devices also. To redeem an Apple gift card on an Apple device, it’s easiest to use the App Store app. Simply opening the app, tapping the icon or personal photo will show the user account window and the words ‘Redeem Gift Card or Code’ will appear near the top. Tapping ‘Redeem’ will begin the process. Scanning the card with the device camera is quickest, but the 16-digit code from the back of the card can also be typed in manually. For those using a Windows computer, the process is the same but starts with the iTunes app. To redeem an Apple gift card using an Android device, use the Apple Music app. In each case, the user must go to account settings, click or tap on ‘Redeem’ then type in the code from the back of the card.

Apple Gift Card Options

An Apple gift card can usually be used in an Apple Store, just as a credit card would be used, but Apple Stores are restricting access currently, due to the pandemic. At present, online use is best. After redeeming the card, the amount will show as a balance associated with the user’s Apple ID and can be used in the App Store, iTunes, Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Books to buy content or subscription services. After signing in at Apple’s website, the balance can be applied to any product or service that can be bought from Apple, including devices, accessories, and subscription services. The balance can be used fully or in part, with any remainder available for future purchases. Only a couple of restrictions apply. Apple gift cards cannot be used to buy other gift cards and can’t be used by family members when family sharing is enabled. This is because family sharing requires payment only from the primary account.

Apple gift cards sent by email can be purchased with a value between $10 and $500. For example, an Apple Arcade subscription is just $5 per month and pays for use on any iPhone, iPad, and Mac in a household if using family sharing. A $25 gift card would pay for 5 months of Apple Arcade. Apple Music costs only $10 per month and offers millions of songs for high-quality streaming to any Apple device. Apple Music is now supported on Android phones, so the value is even better. A gift card with a value of $120 would pay for a year of Apple Music. Note that sales tax may apply, so a little extra on the gift card would help cover that cost. A higher-value card may even be used for purchasing an Apple Watch, iPhone SE, or iPad. Gift cards sent by email can be purchase with a value between $10 and $500. When sent by regular mail, the minimum value is $25 but can be as high as $2,000. The expanded range opens up several more product possibilities, including the iPhone 12, iPad Pro, or even a MacBook or Mac desktop computer. An Apple gift card makes an easy and kind gift that allows some freedom in how it is redeemed.

Although Apple has made its App Store & iTunes gift cards available at retail for years, the company has now launched Apple Gift Cards for consumers as well as Apple Gift Cards for business in Australia.

Billed as “the gift card for everything Apple”, it is a single Apple gift card to purchase products and accessories, and pay for content and services from Apple. The card has no expiry date, and obviously only expires when you transfer the funds to your Apple account balance, as was the case with iTunes cards.

What happens to the existing Apple Store and App Store & iTunes cards currently available?

Well, this new Apple Gift Card replaces the Apple Store and App Store & iTunes Gift Cards, and obviously, makes gift giving easy and simple, as there’s only one card to get. Clearly, you’ll still be able to use existing cards, the cards are simply being replaced with this new unified card.

All you need to do is choose how much you want to gift, purchase on Apple’s site and then send directly via mail or digitally via email.

As with everything Apple does, Apple Gift Cards sport a beautiful design, and they come with a collectible sticker featuring five Apple logo illustrations.

Gift cards can be purchased in amounts anywhere between $10 and $3000, as I discovered at the page to buy an Apple Gift Card when I tried typing in $10,000 to see what would happen, although hey, if you’re going to be super generous with your gifts, you could presumably buy as many gift cards as your finances and generosity allows.

So, what are some examples of what more traditional amounts of gift card amounts can buy?

With a $25 Apple Gift Card:

• Gamers can enjoy three months of Apple Arcade ($7.99 per month) with unlimited access to more than 100 ad-free games without any in-app purchases.
• Film buffs can enjoy three months of Apple TV+ ($7.99 per month), the home of Apple Originals from the world’s greatest storytellers. They can also rent or purchase films
• through the Apple TV app.
• Book worms can purchase great reads for the weekend.

With a $50 Apple Gift Card:

• The entire family can enjoy two months of Apple Music ($17.99 per month) with access to more than 60 million songs.
• News buffs can enjoy three months of Apple News+ ($14.99 per month) with access to hundreds of premium magazines, leading newspapers, and professionally-narrated audio stories.
• Start a new healthy habit with subscriptions to health and fitness apps available on the App Store, including Headspace, Glo – Yoga and Meditation, and Wakeout! – Fun home exercises.

With a $100 Apple Gift Card:

• Your gift can go towards a number of phenomenal products — including iPhone, AirPods, Apple Watch, iPad, and Apple TV — and accessories, including Apple Pencil, Apple Watch bands and more.
• The entire family can share 2TB of iCloud storage ($14.99 per month) for 6 months so all your photos, files, notes, and more are safe, up to date, and available wherever they are.

Obviously, you can buy pre-paid debit cards to do similar things, but those cards normally come with additional fees, so if you’re intending to buy or give Apple products and services as gifts, these cards can be sent digitally within the hour, and can come with a personalised message.
