Are you driving to meet up with your friends, family, or colleagues? If you use Apple Maps for navigation, you’ll be excited to know that you can share your ETA with them right from your iPhone by using Siri.
Apple Maps has a feature that allows users to share their arrival time with any of the contacts stored on your iPhone. This helped in avoiding phone calls from others asking you how long it’d take to reach the destination. But manually sharing ETA from the navigation menu isn’t too convenient. Fortunately another option exists, and you can ask Siri to share your ETA with any of your contacts while you keep your hands on the steering wheel.
How to Share ETA from iPhone with Siri and Apple Maps
You’ll need to make sure you’re using iOS 14 or later to have this capability:
- Launch Apple’s stock Maps app from the home screen of your iPhone.
Using Siri for sharing your ETA is pretty easy, as you can see.
If Siri is not certain about the contact you’re referring to while attempting to share your ETA, you will be prompted to choose one from a bunch of contacts shown on the screen. If you don’t mention a name in your voice command, you’ll be prompted to speak out the contact you want to share it with.
Not too keen on using Siri? Or perhaps, you’re in a public place and don’t want to draw attention to yourself, or seem awkward as you talk to your iPhone? In that case, you may want to learn how you can manually share your ETA from the navigation menu in Apple Maps.
Thanks to the Share ETA feature, you don’t have to call your friend every few minutes to update them while you’re driving, which puts your life at risk by being distracted. It’s also a great way to make sure your parents and family aren’t too worried when you’re traveling. Plus with Siri, you don’t have to fiddle around with your iPhone while you’re driving to get this done.
We hope you were able to use Siri to conveniently share the ETA with your iPhone contacts while traveling. Is this a feature that you see yourself using on a regular basis? Do share your thoughts and experience in the comments section down below.
The Maps app update in iOS 13 brings significant improvements. The maps data is much better, there’s a Look Around feature, and you can now share a Live ETA from Maps app navigation on your iPhone to friends and family.
The next time you’re on your way to meet a friend, or if you want your parents to know how long it will take to get home, just use this Live ETA feature in the Maps app. Once it’s enabled, the app will share your live location and your estimated arrival time with your contact.
Make sure you’re running iOS 13.1 or higher on your iPhone and launch the Maps app. Next, search for and select a destination. Once the destination is selected, tap on the “Directions” button.
From the next screen, select the mode of transport and then tap on the “Go” button.
You’re now on the navigation screen. From here, you’ll see a “Share ETA” button at the bottom of the screen, below the details for the time of arrival.
The Share ETA panel disappears after a few seconds. If you missed the button, you can still access the feature by swiping up on the bottom panel and tapping on the “Share ETA” icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
Tapping on it will reveal a panel of your frequent contacts. You can tap on a contact to quickly share the ETA using the Messages app.
You can also tap on the “Contacts” button to search for and add any contact.
If you see a “Maps” icon next to their profile picture, it means they’re also using iOS 13.1 and they’ll get rich notifications. It also means that they will be able to follow along with your progress in the Maps app.
If you see a “Messages” icon next to their profile picture, it means they’ll only get SMS updates because they’re not using iOS 13 or they don’t have iMessage.
Once you dismiss this panel, it will tell you how many contacts you’re sharing the location with. When you arrive at the destination, the location sharing will stop automatically.
You can also stop sharing your location at any time by tapping on the “Sharing ETA With X People” button.
From the popup, tap on the profile picture of the people you want to stop sharing your location with.
This is just one of the many new awesome features in iOS 13. Once you’ve updated, make sure to try the Dark mode.
As you follow turn-by-turn driving directions in Apple Maps on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you have the option to let others know your estimated time of arrival (ETA). That being said, however, responsible drivers shouldn’t really be taking their eyes off the wheel to tap through the menus. Thankfully, in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, you can ask Siri to share your ETA, hands-free. In this tutorial, you’re going to learn how to share your ETA in Apple Maps with Siri.
ETA in Apple Maps
With the arrival of the iOS 13.1 update on September 24, 2019, Apple customers have gained the ability to share their ETA with one or more contacts. Sending the estimated time of arrival while your route is in progress is an awesome feature for letting those you’re meeting with know when you will arrive. On the dowide, as I said before, using it while navigating used to mean having to take your eyes off the wheel to engage in a multi-step process: tap the Share menu, choose the Share ETA command, select contacts and, lastly, tap Done.
Apple was feeling your pain so they went on to add the ability to share ETAs in Maps throguh the Siri assistant. This helpful feature requires iOS 14 or iPadOS 14, which were previewed during Apple’s virtual WWDC presentation ahead of their public release on September 16, 2020.
How to share your ETA in Apple Maps with Siri
Follow these steps to send your ETA in Apple Maps via Siri to one or more contacts:
- Open the Maps app on your iPhone or iPod touch running the iOS 14.0 update or later or on your iPad with the iPadOS 14.0 software update or later.
- Start navigation in Maps. You can ask Siri to navigate to a location (“Give me driving directions home”, “Navigate to…” or similar) or do it manually by tapping and holding any spot on the map, then choose the option labeled with the text “Directions.” Be sure to choose driving mode because ETA sharing is only available when using driving directions.
- As you follow turn-by-turn driving directions for the selected location, you can optionally let others know your ETA by invoking Siri, they say something like: “Share my ETA”. When asked, tell the name(s) of the contact(s) you’d like to share your estimated time of arrival with.
And that’s how you do it!
The first time you use this, you’ll see a privacy disclaimer clarifying that sharing your ETA with someone will also share the name and email addresses associated with your Apple ID.
Apple Maps always gives you an ETA when you use the app for GPS navigation in driving mode. And if Siri is unavailalbe, you can use the Share menu in Maps to send that information to family, friends or coworkers so they know when they should expect you. And if your ETA changes because of a delay, it’ll be automatically updated so that everyone stays informed.
And with Maps in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, you can do that hands-free via Siri. This feature is unavailable in the Maps app on the Mac computers and Apple Watch smartwatches.
Apple Maps on your iPhone or iPad has an revamped look with several new features you’ll want to use.
Apple Maps’ new Look Around feature is well done, no doubt.
In January, Apple finished rolling out the Apple Maps redesign it announced alongside iOS 13. The new look and features are years in the making, and they finally give iPhone and iPad users a worthy Google Maps replacement.
The new features include sharing your ETA with a contact to keep them updated on your location and time of arrival. There’s also a new Apple-made feature called Look Around that’s akin to Google’s Street View .
Apple Maps isn’t the only major change in iOS 13. There are plenty of new features , including a new swipe keyboard that doesn’t let you swear , that make the upgrade appealing.
Share ETA is a convenient way to let your friends know when you’ll arrive.
Share your ETA
This has to be one of the more useful features that Apple has added in recent memory. As of iOS 13.1 , you can share your estimated time of arrival with a friend through Apple Maps, iMessage or text when you’re using Apple Maps navigation. Here’s how:
1. Start Apple Maps navigation and get turn-by-turn directions to a location.
2. When viewing current directions, swipe up on the bottom of the area that displays your arrival time and shows the end button.
3. Tap the Share ETA button.
4. Select the contact or contacts with whom you want to share it.
After tapping on the Share ETA button, you may notice that some contacts have an Apple Maps icon next to their name, instead of a Messages icon. Those are people also using an iPhone.
If your iPhone is running iOS 13.1 or newer, and you’re sharing your ETA with someone with an iPhone on iOS 13.1 or newer, then Apple Maps will be used to share your location, route, and ETA. However, if you share your ETA with a non-iPhone user, or someone running iOS 13 or older on their Apple device, then a message will be sent.
When Apple Maps sends a text or iMessage, it will read something similar to this:
I started sharing my ETA with you in Apple Maps: arriving at Pepsi Center around 10:44 AM. I’ll let you know if I’m running late.
If you hit traffic or take a detour, Apple Maps will send another message letting the person know you’re running behind and the new estimated time of arrival.
From my testing, the threshold for triggering another alert was if I would be 5 minutes late. So, in the instance above, if my new arrival time was 10:49 a.m., Apple Maps would send another message.
The added details in the new Apple Maps make a world of difference.
There’s now a more detailed map
Apple has also spent a lot of time scanning streets and roads across the country to produce a more detailed, better-looking map. The new-look started as a slow roll out in the US following the launch of iOS 13 in September. At the end of January, Apple announced the rollout was complete .
If you haven’t seen the more detailed map yet, open the Maps app and look at your area. You don’t have to update your app, it’s all done automatically on Apple’s servers.
Another notable change in Apple Maps is a new feature called Look Around. It’s similar to Google’s Street View, using photos to show you exactly what a location looks like and allowing you to move around the city streets. The only downside is that it’s only available in New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Oahu, Houston and Los Angeles right now. Apple has quickly added more cities to the list (Look Around initially launched with support for only San Francisco) and will continue to add more cities in the future.
Look Around is pretty cool, if live in a city that actually has it.

How do I use Look Around?
If you don’t live in one of the supported cities, that’s all right — you can still check out Look Around. Here’s how:
1. Open Apple Maps and zoom in on a city that has Look Around. I picked San Francisco when testing because it’s one of my favorite cities to visit.
2. Zoom in to a specific area, or until you see a pair of binoculars show up in the top-right corner of the map; just below the location icon and the “i” button.
3. Select the binoculars to open Look Around.
A window will pop up, with a familiar Street View-like look. Expand Look Around to full-screen mode by tapping on the double-arrow icon.
You can swipe around in that window to change the direction of the photo, or tap on the street to move down the block (just like tapping on arrows in Street View). As you move around, you can tap on the name of a business to zoom in on the storefront and view its address, hours, phone number and website — the same stuff you see when searching for a business in Maps.
These features join the already impressive list of additions Apple made to iOS 13. From a new Reminders app , to a new method for deleting apps on your iPhone and iPad ($249 at Amazon) — there’s a lot to learn .
Sometimes, our phones can be a force for good. This is particularly true when it comes to personal safety, since iPhones, especially, are packed with several handy tools to give your friends and family greater peace of mind.
In the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS and macOS, the Find My app combines the Find My iPhone and Find My Friends apps of old into a single hub (if you need help finding it, use Search on your iPhone and iPad or use Spotlight on your Mac).
It’s here that you’ll find your device’s main location-sharing features, though both Messages and Maps have similar features, too.
Below, we’ll walk you through the steps you need to take to activate them – and don’t worry, for those with older models, these steps should still apply, albeit through separate apps.
Share your location through the Find My app
The Find My app is your best bet for location sharing on iPhone. It’s also built into all iOS 13-enabled devices and above, so you (probably) won’t have to download it or install another app.
Open the Find My app and select the People tab, then select Share My Location or Start Sharing Location. Enter the name or phone number of the person you want to share your location with, and hit send. This will send a notification to the recipient of your whereabouts.
You can choose to notify them for one hour, until the end of the day or indefinitely, and when the recipient receives a notification, they have the option to share their location back with you. To stop sharing with one person, open the People tab in the Find My app and select Stop Sharing My Location.
It’s also worth noting that you can share your location via your Apple Watch, too. On devices which have watchOS 6 or later and GPS or cellular functionality, you can use the Find People app to complete the same process, as long the watch is connected to your iPhone.
Share your location through the Messages app
As well as the Find My app, though, you can also share your location through Messages.
To do so, open the Messages app on your iPhone and select a message. Then select the name of the person at the top of the conversation and choose the information icon.
You then have the option to Send My Current Location. If selected, the recipient will see your location on their map. Alternatively, you can choose to Share My Location, selecting the length of time you want to share your location for, in the same way you would with the Find My App.
You can also do this directly from the Contacts app.
Share your ETA in Maps
Rounding off your iPhone’s handy roster of location-sharing capabilities is Apple Maps.
As you follow turn-by-turn driving (or walking) directions in the Maps app, there are two ways you can let others know your estimated time of arrival (ETA).
The first, and easiest, is by asking Siri. Simply say something like “Hey Siri, share my ETA”, and you’ll be guided through a conversation that will ultimately result in a chosen recipient being informed of your ETA.
Alternatively, when turn-by-turn directions are showing on-screen, you can tap the route card at the bottom of the map, then hit Share ETA. Choose one or more suggested contacts, or tap Contacts to find a specific individual. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you’re not actually driving if you decide to follow this hands-on method.
Whichever option you choose, though, people using devices with iOS 13.1 or later will receive a Maps notification with your ETA, and they can track your progress in their own Maps app. Those using devices with earlier versions receive the notification through iMessage, while phones using a different OS will receive an SMS message.
Useful tips
It’s important to note that standard carrier data and text rates may apply, whichever location-sharing feature you enable.
If you like, you can also name the locations you frequently visit. Open the Find My app, then select the Me tab. Scroll down and choose Edit Location Name, before selecting Home, Work, School, Gym or adding your own custom labels.
To change the device that you’re sharing your location from, open Find My on that device. Select the Me tab, then choose Use this [insert device] as My Location.
You can also ask to follow someone’s location, as long as you’re sharing your own location with them. To do so, open the Find My app and select the People tab. Select the person you’ve already shared your location with, then scroll down and choose Ask To Follow Location, before selecting OK.
