There are several ways to stop Skype from automatically running on Windows start.
1. Click Tools >> Options >> General Settings . Uncheck or unmark Start Skype when I start Windows . Click Save .

Windows 10 now signs you into Skype automatically, making you available so you’ll always receive messages and incoming calls. If you’d rather not be signed into Skype all the time, here’s how to sign out.
There are two different Skype apps. One, currently called “Skype Preview”, now comes with Windows 10 and signs you in by default. Then there’s the older, traditional Skype desktop app you’re probably used to, that you have to download separately—though once you do, it also launches at boot and keeps you signed in at all times. Here’s how to stop one (or both) versions of Skype from running in the background.
Sign Out of Windows 10’s New Skype Preview App
The new Skype Preview application signs you in by default after you upgrade to the Windows 10’s Anniversary Update or set up a new Windows 10 PC. You have to sign out of the Skype application if you want to stop this.
Open your Start menu and launch the “Skype Preview” application. You can either search for “Skype” and click the “Skype Preview shortcut, or scroll down to the “S” section in your list of installed apps and click the “Skype Preview” shortcut.
Click the profile icon at the bottom left corner of the Skype Preview window.
Click the “Sign Out” button at the bottom of your account status screen. Skype will sign out.
The next time you launch the Skype Preview app, it will ask you to sign in with your account. Skype won’t sign you in again unless you provide your account details.
Prevent the Skype Desktop App From Starting at Boot
The traditional desktop version of Skype does something similar after you install it. It automatically starts with your PC and signs you in by default, ensuring you’re always online to receive messages. You can tell Skype not to start when you sign in if you don’t want it constantly running in the background.
To do this, open the traditional Skype desktop application. That’s the “Skype” application in your Start menu—not the “Skype Preview” application included with Windows 10.
Click Tools > Options in the Skype window.
Uncheck the “Start Skype when I start Windows” option and click “Save”.
Skype won’t automatically start with your PC. It will only start when you launch it.
Prevent the Skype Desktop App From Running in the Background
The desktop version of Skype will still continue running after you launch it, keeping you signed in. Even if you close the Skype window, it will remain running in the background.
To close the Skype desktop application, locate the Skype icon in the notification area next to the clock on your taskbar. Right-click the Skype system tray icon and select “Quit”.

Windows 10 is here, and we are loving it so far. But some users have reported a few bugs affecting Skype.
Namely, they’re not able to close the application. So in this article, we’re going to show you a couple of solutions for this problem
Dozens of Windows 10 users have reported one strange bug with Skype on their computers which prevents them from shutting down the program.
If you want to shut down Skype, usually you would right click the icon in your Taskbar and select “Quit Skype” from context menu.
However, many users have reported that they cannot exit Skype this way, therefore we’re providing you with a few workarounds.
What can I do if Skype won’t close on my computer?
1. Close Skype from system tray
If you’re one of those users that cannot close Skype via Taskbar, try closing it via system tray. First go to the bottom right edge of your screen, and there should be a Skype icon next to your clock.
If no Skype icon is available, it might be hidden, so you need to press an arrow button in order to reveal it. After finding the Skype icon in system tray, right-click on it and then press Quit Skype.
2. Uninstall Skype and replace it with the latest version
There’s one more fix available and it requires you to uninstall the current version of Skype.
After uninstalling Skype from your computer, you need to head over to the Skype’s website, download the latest version of Skype and reinstall it.
After reinstalling Skype, you should be able to close it via Taskbar, without going to the system tray.
We have to point out that this solution didn’t fix the problem on all Windows 10 computers, but it has helped number of users, so it’s worth checking out.
3. Close Skype using the Task Manager
If this doesn’t help, and you still can’t quit Skype, you can always turn it off using Task Manager. Head over to your Taskbar, right-click on it and then choose Task Manager from the context menu.
When Task Manager opens up, scroll down the list until you find Skype process, select it, and press “End Task” button. This will forcefully and successfully close Skype.
4. Create a .bat file
Another method to force quit Skype is to create a batch file and add the following lines in it:
- taskkill /f /im skypeapp.exe
- taskkill /f /im skypehost.exe
Save the file to your desktop and simply open it in order to turn off Skype.
At this time we don’t know what is causing this issue, and Microsoft is working really hard to patch Skype and to resolve this minor problem, and we’re hoping that official fix will be available soon to all Windows 10 users.

The Skype app included with Windows 10 now has a notification area icon. That’s great, but what if you never use Skype and don’t want it starting every time you sign in? Here’s how to get rid of it.
Sure, you could just right-click the Skype tray icon and close it, but it’ll come right back the next time you boot your PC.
Disable Skype Autostart via the Task Manager
Thankfully, the latest versions of Skype now function like a normal Windows application again. You can’t use Skype’s built-in option to disable automatic startup without signing in first, but there’s a way around it: Disable it with the Task Manager.
To find this option, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc or right-click your taskbar and select “Task Manager.”
Click the “Startup” tab. If you don’t see any tabs, click “More Details” first.
Look for “Skype” in the list, right-click it, and select “Disable.” Windows won’t open Skype automatically when you sign in anymore.
Skype will continue running if it’s already open when you do this, but you can right-click the Skype icon in your taskbar’s notification area (don’t call it a system tray!) and select “Quit Skype” to close it immediately.
How to Remove Skype From Your System Tray on Windows 10
Update: You likely have the newer Skype app installed on your PC by now, so the above instructions should work. If they don’t, follow the below instructions for the older version of Skype.
With the older “Modern” Skype app, you can’t just right-click the Skype tray icon and close it like a traditional desktop app. Skype doesn’t give you a “Quit” option. Skype doesn’t give you a “Quit” option.
Microsoft’s modern Skype app doesn’t even appear in your list of startup programs, so you can’t disable it by managing your startup programs from the Settings app or Task Manager.
However, you can hide the icon from Skype’s settings window. Right-click the Skype icon in your notification area and click “Settings” or open the Skype window, click the “…” menu button, and click “Settings.”
Click the “General” category and disable the “Show Skype in the Windows notification area (system tray)” option. Skype’s notification area icon will vanish.
Note that people can still send you Skype messages if you’re signed in, even if Skype doesn’t appear in the notification area. To stop that, sign out of Skype. Click the “…” menu in the Skype window and click “Sign Out” to do so.
If you don’t want to use Skype at all, you can also uninstall it. Locate the Skype shortcut in your Start menu, right-click it, and select “Uninstall.” Windows 10 lets you uninstall many other built-in apps in this way, too.
If you have multiple Skype applications installed and you just want to remove the built-in Windows 10 version, look for the Skype shortcut marked as a “Trusted Microsoft Store app” and remove it.
The traditional Skype desktop application does have a “Quit Skype” option available when you right-click its notification area icon. That version of Skype works like the traditional Skype client you’re used to.
This is pretty confusing because the built-in Store version of Skype and the modern desktop version are almost the same thing, but the desktop version of Skype offers more features.

After all, from colleagues to friends and family, Skype keeps us all connected. We send messages to each other, make fun video calls, share files, and above all, see all those who are online.
However, with all the beeps and boops, Skype can be a real nuisance at times. Often, we aren’t even aware of whether we are logged into the platform or not and suddenly we start receiving calls & messages at the most unwarranted occasions, for example in the midst of important business meetings.
Basically, this happens because by default, Skype logs a user in automatically every time their device powers on. The person then stays logged in the background until the device completely shuts down.
Skype is designed in such a way that it ensures your loved ones can always stay connected with you.
But that can seriously turn sour when you are busy!
Do you know that you can stop Skype from auto-starting on your Windows? So, today, I will explain you how you can disable Skype in Windows 10 right at startup. The next time your system boots, it will not auto-start Skype. Instead, you will have to manually open it by double-clicking the Skype icon.
Method # 1: Log-Out from Your Skype Account Once You Are Done Using It
The fastest and most reliable way to stop Skype from auto-starting is to log-out from your Skype account permanently. What is your end goal? I am sure you want people to stop annoying you on Skype.
All you have to do is log-out from your Skype account once when you are done using it.
So, the next time you boot your system, Skype will auto-start but it will eventually fail to sign in.
Here’s how you can log-out from the Skype app in Windows 10.
Step # 1: Click on the the three dots located on the upper left corner of the screen.
Step # 2: Choose the option that says “Sign Out”
Step # 3: Skype will automatically exit from the screen.
Normally, when you are using Skype and you are logged into the platform, there are two processes running in the background. You can check both of these processes working in the background in Task Manager. To access Task Manager, press CTRL + SHIFT + DEL and select Task Manager.
Both of these processes are SkypeHost.exe and SkypeApp.exe. So when you shutdown your Skype without logging out, SkypeHost.exe still keeps running in the background so you can still receive notifications from your Skype contacts. However, when you log out of Skype, both the processes gets killed. As a result, when you shutdown your Windows and restart your system, it doesn’t log you in.
Method # 2: Set Skype not to Automatically Start from the Settings
The other method isn’t complicated either and is an option that will permanently stop Skype from logging you back in on the Windows Start-Up. The step are as follows:
- Step # 1: Double click the Skype icon and start the Skype Desktop app on your computer.
- Step # 2: Click on the three dots located at the upper left corner of the screen.
- Step # 3: Go to the Settings option.
- Step # 4: In the Settings option, go to General settings.
- Step # 5: Flip the switch “OFF” , Automatically start Skype once and for all.
By selecting this option, you will permanently stop Skype from auto-starting. If you follow the first method, even though you will stay logged out, Skype will still run in the background on Windows 10. However, with the second option in place, Skype will not even start in the first place. In fact, you will have to double click the Skype icon and manually start Skype in order to use it. However, don’t forget that you will still be logged in Even though you have shutdown the program permanently.
