Raise to Wake is a new Lock screen feature available in iOS 10. It allows you to wake your phone’s screen simply by picking up your phone. This feature is on by default, but if you’d rather not use it, it’s simple to turn off.
If you have an Apple Watch, you’re already familiar with this feature. If you’ve installed the iOS 10 Beta on your phone, you probably discovered this feature the first time you picked up your phone after installing the update. It’s a handy feature, especially if you want to look at your watch (or phone) while balancing a bunch of stuff in your arms. With the Raise to Wake feature, you don’t have to press the Home button or Power button to wake your phone’s screen. If you use the speedy Touch ID feature to unlock your phone, you might accidentally unlock it in iOS 10 when you try to press the Home button to wake the screen (although, you can still wake the screen using the Power button).
NOTE: This feature is only available on the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, and SE.
Maybe you don’t want the screen turning on every time you pick up the phone to put it in your pocket, pouch, or purse, so you want to turn off the Raise to Wake feature. To do so, tap the “Settings” icon on the Home screen.
On the Settings screen, tap “Display & Brightness”.
The “Raise to Wake” slider button is green indicating the feature is on. Tap the slider to turn it off.
When the Raise to Wake feature is off , the slider button is light gray. If you want to use the feature again, simply tap the slider button to turn it back on.
The Raise to Wake feature in iOS 10 has the same functionality as Android’s “Ambient Display”, which has been available for a while. So, now Apple has finally caught up. It’s about time.

‘Raise to Wake’ is a new feature of iOS 10 that automatically turns on the screen of your iPhone every time you pick it up and it’s facing towards you. This is very useful if you want to wake your iPhone just to check the received notification or the time. Rather than using the Home button, you can simply pick up your device to turn on the display.
The ‘Raise to Wake’ feature is one of my favorite iOS 10 features, as I wasn’t very fond of using the Power or Sleep/Wake button to access the Lock screen to prevent it from accidentally triggering Touch ID on my iPhone 6s.
Now before you get too excited, let me tell you that Raise to Wake only works in select iPhone models. This includes:
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 6s & iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus
If you don’t find your iPhone model in this list, then unfortunately it means that ‘Raise to Wake’ isn’t supported on your device. Otherwise, if you own one of the supported devices then read the guide below to find out how to enable or disable Raise to Wake.
The Raise to Wake feature is enabled by default, but if you find it annoying then you can disable it via the Settings app.
How to Turn Off ‘Raise to Wake’
Step 1: Go to the Settings app.
Step 2: Scroll down a bit and open Display & Brightness.
Step 3: Toggle off Raise to Wake if you want to disable it, otherwise turn it on to enable.
If you chose to disable Raise to Wake, then the screen of your iPhone will no longer turn on when you pick it up. Otherwise, if it has been turned on then it should wake your device automatically as you pick it up.
Do you like the feature or do you prefer to keep it disabled?Let me know in the comments.
A default ‘Raise to Wake’ feature is present in the newer models of all iPhones. These models include the iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone 6s/6s Plus or any other newer version. Follow this guide to learn how to enable or disable raise to wake on iPhone.
As the name implies, this feature wakes up the device’s display screen when you physically take it out of your pocket or even when you pick it from a surface you had previously placed it on. Even though this feature saves the hassle of pressing buttons in order to awaken the device’s display, there are some users who don’t want to use it.
If you’re such a user then you need to learn how to disable Raise to Wake on iPhone.
How to Disable Raise to Wake on iPhone
Here’s how you can disable Raise to Wake on iPhone that has an iOS 10.
- First off all open the ‘Settings’ app and then head on over to ‘Display & Brightness’.
- Once there, you’ll need to find the ‘Raise to Wake’ option and simply toggle it OFF.
There, that’s it! With the Raise to Wake option disabled you can now lock the screen of your device and see that nothing will happen even when you raise your iPhone.
It is totally up to you why you want to learn how to disable Raise to Wake on iPhone. It could be because you don’t like the feature or you might not like accidentally turning the screen on and having your device stuck at the widgets or the passcode entry screen.
Even though you can go ahead and disable the widgets screen from accidentally showing it is recommended that you disable Raise to Wake on iPhone as that’ll help you save the battery’s charge.
If you want to enable the Raise to Wake option on your iPhone then you can do that too.
How to Enable Raise to Wake on iPhone
You can easily enable the Raise to Wake feature on your iPhone by following these steps:
- Choose the ‘Display & Brightness’ option by going into ‘Settings’.
- Toggle ON the ‘Raise to Wake’ option.
Enabling the Raise to Wake feature on your iPhone will allow your device’s screen to turn on automatically whenever you raise it or take it out of our pocket or bag, etc. in order to look at it.
As mentioned above, the Raise to Wake is a default setting on all of the new iPhone models that are running on iOS 10 or higher. But you can disable the Raise to Wake on iPhone if need be.
Pretend you’re me. You’ve got friends with whom you text a lot. Said texts, while hilarious, often contain words and opinions that aren’t suitable for everyone, let’s put it that way. Enter the iOS 10 Raise to Wake feature! Yikes.
You see, when paired with notifications appearing on my lock screen, “Raise to Wake” has already led to some stuff flashing up that was less than ideal, just because I happened to turn my iPhone over on a table. So I toggled “Raise to Wake” off. If you’re paranoid like I am (or you just would rather control when your screen turns on and your notifications appear), here’s what you’ll do. First, open Settings on your iOS 10 device and go to the “Display & Brightness” section.
Within “Display & Brightness” is the “Raise to Wake” toggle. Turn that off as I’ve done below, and you’ll then need to press a button to turn your screen on instead of it waking automatically.
Whew. No more cursing in front of clients. Well, at least no more TEXT cursing in front of clients. I make no promises about what I’ll say when I can’t get their Macs to do my bidding.
Here’s how you can disable ‘Raise to Wake’ feature on iPhone running iOS 10. We have the list of compatible devices as well.
‘Raise to Wake’ Is an Awesome Feature, but Can Get Annoying at Times
iOS 10 is jam-packed with great features that are waiting to be discovered. And if you have one of the newer iPhone smartphones at hand, then you might’ve noticed something strange after updating to iOS 10. The moment you raise your phone towards your face, the screen magically turns on. Cool isn’t it? Indeed it is, as it saves you from a lot of trouble of pressing that power or Home button to do the same.
But there’s one problem with the feature – it can get annoying at times. Thankfully, you can turn it off completely and the steps are very easy to follow. Here goes nothing.
1. Unlock your iPhone as you normally would and launch the Settings app.
2. Scroll down and tap on ‘Display & Brightness.’
3. See the ‘Raise to Wake’ toggle switch? Tap to turn it OFF.
Surprisingly, with Raise to Wake turned off, you will notice improved battery life as well since the device does not power on the display from time to time. Furthermore, if you don’t see the Raise to Wake option on your device, then it’s highly likely your iPhone is not supported by this feature.
The list of supported devices is as follows:
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone SE
It’s rather strange why the iPhone 6 is not supported by this feature despite being a capable enough smartphone. This, and a million other things, we will never understand as they fall under decisions taken by Apple. You know how it is, don’t deny it.
Wrap Up
If you’re a regular iPhone user, we recommend keeping Raise to Wake on at all times since it’s a great way to glance at the display without spending much effort. Also, it will prevent you from pressing the power or Home button unnecessary as well, avoiding that wear and tear which you totally hate.
iOS 10 brings a lot to the fore and we will highlight a lot of features in the day and weeks to come, so be sure you’re tuned in for that. Meanwhile, it’s totally up to you what you want to do with Raise to Wake for now. We’re certain you’ll find some good uses for it. If not, then turn it off.

A. The iPhone 6s and later models include a feature called Raise to Wake that senses when you pick up the device and then automatically flips on the display screen — so you do not have to fumble around with the Home or power buttons when you want to check something. If you have just purchased a new iPhone or had not upgraded your hardware in a few years, the sudden activity can seem a little unsettling.
When you lift the phone and the display wakes up, you land on the iPhone’s lock screen. You can see your alerts without having to unlock the phone — if you have notifications set to show up there. (Some people prefer not to, out of privacy concerns.)
Raise to Wake also saves you a step if you need to snap a photo in a hurry because as you lift the phone, you can swipe the screen to the left to quickly jump to the iPhone’s Camera app. Swiping up from the bottom of the screen summons the iOS Control Center, where you can change the music volume, use the iPhone’s flashlight, switch on Airplane Mode and adjust other settings without having to unlock the phone and fiddle around in the main Settings app.

If you do not want your notifications visible to people nearby or worry your phone’s battery is taking too much of a hit when the screen pops on each time you move the device, you can turn off “Raise to Wake.” To do that, unlock your iPhone, tap the Settings app on the Home screen, select Display & Brightness and tap the button near Raise to Wake to disable the feature.
