Google Chrome lets you automatically translate a webpage not written in your browser’s default language. Like most online translation software, though, it can be a little unreliable. If you don’t need it—or if you use a different translation service—here’s how to turn Chrome’s off.

How to Turn Translation On or Off

The first thing you want to do is fire up Chrome, click the menu icon, and then click on “Settings.” Alternatively, you can type chrome://settings/ into your address bar to go directly there.

Once in the Settings menu, scroll down to the bottom and click on “Advanced.”

Scroll down a little bit more until you see the Languages heading, then click on “Language.”

By default, Chrome has translation enabled. If you want to disable this feature, click the toggle button into the off position. If you’re going to continue to use the translate feature, do nothing.

When navigating to a site that’s automatically been translated by Chrome, a Google Translate icon appears in the Omnibox. To see what’s available for the site or language-specific options, click the Translate icon.

From here, you can choose to “Show Original” to translate the page back into the original language, or you can click the dropdown “Options” button for a few other choices, like having it always translate the language, never translate the language, or never translate the current site. You also can change language settings.

If you have more than one language added to your browser, Chrome will normally just offer to translate web pages to your browser’s primary language. By default Chrome’s translating of additionally added languages is turned off, but if you’d rather Chrome handle these languages as well, click more (three dots next to a language) next to the language, and tick the “Offer to translate pages in this language” setting. This lets Chrome translate specific languages for you in the future.

Users of Chrome—Google’s powerful web browser—have surely noticed the omnibox bar that pops up when viewing a webpage written in another language. Chrome offers to translate the language into the one chosen by the user as their browser default. This feature is quite useful on those occasions where we can make neither head nor tail of the foreign words on a particular site. International students, tourists and technicians have found this a fine tool to use, each for different reasons.

The world is rapidly shrinking into a global village with communication barriers becoming ever so slightly thinner with each latest advance. The translation tool in Chrome is Google’s take on an online interpreter, breaking down language barriers with the flick of a thumb. Though it doesn’t (yet) support every single language on Earth, more than 500 million users of over 100 languages have been experiencing the joys of mutual intelligibility, thanks to this handy translation tool.

This feature in Chrome has been enabled by default, but it can be turned off and re-enabled at your convenience. The steps to do either are pretty simple. Even the inexperienced will find that it is one of the easiest settings to fiddle with on a Windows computer.

How to turn on translation in Chrome?

As mentioned earlier, the Google Translate integration in Chrome on Windows is turned on by default. This means that you don’t need to navigate the Chrome settings menu looking for a toggle to trigger the feature. Just visit the foreign language webpage of your choice, and you will get an omnibox that tells you Google has translated the page to your own language.

If you’re not getting automatic translation for some reason, there is no need to despair just yet. You can still enable it yourself without much fuss. Without further ado, let’s dive into Chrome’s settings menu to turn on this feature.

1. First things first: Open your Chrome browser.
2. Click the three vertical dots on the top right to open the Chrome menu.
3. Navigate down and expand the Advanced submenu.
4. Look for the Languages heading within Advanced and expand it.
5. At the bottom of the page that displays your browser languages, toggle the Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read setting to on.
6. Exit the settings menu.

From this point onwards, Google will automatically translate pages when you visit sites displayed in foreign languages. It will inform you of this fact through an omnibox popup. You can make granular changes to each translated language.

If you prefer to keep the page in the original language, all you have to do is click the translate icon and Show original to reverse the translation. The Option box brings further controls. You can choose to always or never translate the language in question. You can also exempt the website from automatic translation. Finally, there is an option to change the target language. This is useful if you want to see how the site looks in a third language that isn’t your browser default.

In case there are multiple languages added to your Chrome browser, you should do the steps above for each language, otherwise Chrome will only translate sites into your primary browser language.

How to turn off translation in Chrome?

On the other hand, you might want to turn off the Google Translate integration in your Chrome browser. Maybe you are an accomplished linguist who doesn’t require the services of software to make sense of Italian or Spanish. Maybe you think Chrome’s translation isn’t good enough for your high standards. Or maybe you just want rid of the omnibox. Whatever the reason, you can disable automatic translation in Chrome.

1. Open Chrome on your Windows PC.
2. Go to the menu.
3. Go to Settings > Advanced.
4. Expand the Languages heading.
5. Toggle the Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read setting to off.

I you have the feature enabled in multiple browser languages, you have to turn it off for each.

Tip: If you don’t like the Chrome translation tool, you can add third-party language software to handle automatic translation. You do this by making the tool an extension within Chrome. There are some good ones to be found online. For the method to add extensions, read on:

1. Open Chrome and go to the menu.
2. Hover the cursor over the More tools item in the menu to bring up the expanded dropdown.
3. Click on Extensions.
4. Follow the Chrome Web Store link to download your extension for Chrome.
5. Enable the extension.

To add a manually downloaded extension, toggle on Developer mode on the top right of the Extensions page. Then click the Load unpacked extension button to install your extension, which should be in zip format.

Some users, especially on Windows 10, have complained that Chrome takes too long to translate the page. The translation indicator would just turn and turn for a long time before rendering the page in the browser language. Many people have turned off the tool for this very reason. However, it is a pretty fast tool, so the problem might have more to do with your computer speed.

8. If you choose Translate, this page will be translated to the language that you use to display the Chrome UI immediately. If you choose Options, you can hit Change languages in the drop-down menu to do further settings for the translation.

9. If you want to translate a page in language A to language B, then set language A as the Page language and language B as the Translation language. And you can check Always translate to make the translation completely automatic. It means next time you open a web page in language A, it will be translated to language B automatically without asking.

10. And to turn off the auto translation , you just need to go to Settings > Advanced > Languages again and uncheck the option of Offer to translate pages in this language.

And with the option turning off, you can still right-click anywhere on this page to translate it.

The best feature of google chrome that it automatically translates a webpage. For example, you visit a website that is not written in your native language. !. On PC, you click the three-dot icon which is the menu at the top-right corner of your browser.

2. Select ‘Settings’.

3. Under ‘Advanced’, click on ‘Language’.

On PC

1. Once Chrome detects the page is not in your default language, there is a pop up that prompts you to translate to your default language.

2. If there is no pop-up, right-click on the page and click on ‘Translate page’.

3. If you don’t want to translate to your default language, click the three dots on the prompt as shown below and select ‘more language’. Choose the language you want the page to be translated to and that is it.

On Mobile

1. Chrome on mobile also auto-detects if the language is not in any language you’ve added or including the one(s) you’ve set to ‘offer to translate.

2. If it does not bring the translation option, you can click the three-dotted icon or menu and choose translate.

3. You can also choose any language you want by clicking the three-dotted icon on the translate option and choose more language.

Automatic Translation in Chrome

When you visit any website written in another language as specified in your settings (Generally English), a pop up bar will automatically appear. It will be titles as “Translate this page?” and asks whether you would like to translate or not. The translation popup will appear from the Google translate icon at the right end of address bar as shown in the below picture.

Click on the “Translate” button to convert the webpage instantly into English. Now the popup will show as “Translated” with the option to revert back the translation to show the webpage in original language.

The “Options” button appears on the popup before and after translation. It allows you to do the followings:

• Always translate the language of the webpage to browser’s language.
• Never translate the language of the webpage to browser’s language.
• Never translate the specific site.
• Change languages – use this option to change the translation language instantly on the screen. You can always check the box “Always Translate” to enable auto translation for the set page and translation languages.

Translating Sites You Have Opted for Never Translate

When you choose “Never Translate This Site” option, Chrome will stop offering the translation popup. If you have wrongly selected this option, there are no site specific options available for you to enable the translation again. However, you can still right click on the webpage and choose “Translate to English” or translate to your browser’s language.

You can also click on the Google translate icon on the address bar if that is visible.

Automatic Translation and Chrome Language

As mentioned, the translation language is the default language of your Chrome browser. You can change the browser’s language to any language of your choice so that the translation will be done in your favorite language. To setup translation language, follow the steps as explained below.

Open Google Chrome and go to the command URL “chrome://settings” in address bar. Scroll down and click on the “Advanced” button.

Again scroll down and click on the “Language” option under “Languages” section. Here you can see the default language of Chrome.

By default, if you have not changed the settings, English will be the default language in Chrome. You can see the option “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read” is also enabled by default. This option result in throwing the translation popup when you open webpages other than English.

You can simply turn this option off to disable the automatic translation in Google Chrome.

Auto Translation for Specific Language

The above way of turning off the “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read” will completely switch off the translation. In most cases, you have a native language for which you don’t need translation. However, you may still need auto translation for all other foreign languages. In this case, follow these instructions to toggle the translation on or off for specific language.

Click on “Add languages” link and add your favorite language to Chrome.

After adding a language, click on the three dots button against the language to view more options.

Check the box “Offer to translate pages in this languages” to offer automatic translation for that specific language. This is not required when you have this option enabled for all the languages. Ensure you have disabled this option for specific language, so that Chrome will not offer translation. This is useful when you read webpages in your mother tongue which not English.

You can and as many as languages and customize the option for each language separately.

Mac Vs. Windows 10

One of the major reason we love Chrome is due to the robust platform independent design of the browser. Unfortunately, the languages section works differently in Windows 10 and macOS. The above screenshots are from Mac which does not support changing the browser language. Below is how it looks on Windows where you have an additional option to make any specific language as the default Chrome language. You need to add languages in Mac to customize the translation settings, while on Windows 10 you can simply change the browser language itself.

Google Chrome Translate Extension

If you don’t like the automatic Chrome translation feature then simply switch on for all sites as explained above. You can instead use extensions to do the translation function. Download and install Google Chrome Translate Extension from Chrome Web Store.

After the completion of installation, you will find the extension at the right corner of your screen. Just press the icon and translate web pages, sentence or phrases from any language just by a click of a button.
