Making delicious tea is challenging, especially if you stray beyond basic black leaves. You must account for tea type, steep time and water temperature to produce the best flavor possible. Luckily, there’s one kitchen gadget which does an admirable job of automating these tasks, the $250, £375 (on Amazon), AU$300 Breville One-Touch Tea Maker.

Priced as much as premium drip coffee brewers, this machine is certainly no impulse buy. Of course no other electric tea brewer offers the same level of sophistication and controls, either. Besides preset modes for popular tea types, the machine can brew using custom parameters for target temperature and steep time that the Breville handles with robotic, motorized precision. In addition, the appliance is attractive, thoughtfully designed and easy to operate and clean. All these abilities uniquely qualify the Breville Tea Maker as the perfect, though expensive, kitchen companion for passionate tea drinkers.

    Design

From the moment I laid eyes on the Breville Tea Maker, I knew that I gazed upon a pricey appliance. Clad in a skin of shiny stainless steel with sections crafted from tempered glass, plus a touch of tasteful grey polycarbonate, this machine strikes quite a handsome profile. Like the Mr. Coffee Tea Maker and Kettle and other similar products, the Breville’s tea brewer consists of two main parts: a “power base” platform and an electric kettle carafe (Breville calls this a “Jug”). This jug sits on top the base and rests inside of a special cradle the platform’s center. So positioned, the jug draws electricity from the base to power its internal heater.

The Breville Tea Maker has pricey metallic looks.

Unlike the Breville appliance, the body of the less expensive Mr. Coffee machine is constructed from cheaper plastic materials. Another difference between the two tea makers is that the Breville’s base features a small LCD screen that displays pertinent info such as water temp, and brew time. By contrast, Mr. Coffee’s gadget communicates its status merely by blinking lights and emitting cryptic electronic beeps. It’s a design approach that’s less than ideal since it’s harder to tell what the device is doing at any given moment. On many occasions I lost track of exactly where the Mr. Coffee tea kettle was in its brewing process which is critical since you have to remove its tea basket yourself.

In terms of physical footprint, the Breville and Mr. Coffee products have practically the same compact dimensions. The Breville Tea Maker stands 10 inches tall by 6 inches wide with a depth of 8 inches (25 by 15 by 20cm). The two devices share an identical tea-making capacity as well, maxing out at 40 ounces (1.2L). Keep in mind that Breville’s machine can ultimately boil more water when acting as an ordinary electric kettle (51 ounces, 1.5L).

There are plenty of brewing modes to choose from.

    Close to completely automatic

The world has yet to see a totally automatic tea brewer, but the Breville Tea Maker is pretty darn close. Because it does much of the work for you, using and operating this gizmo is dead simple.

The first step is to remove the kettle’s lid then pull the stainless steel tea basket out from inside the jug. The basket sports a handy ring on top to make the task painless. And instead of being physically fastened to the jug, the basket clings in place thanks to its own magnet and one inside the kettle’s long post. It’s a very slick touch that makes the basket a cinch to remove yet firmly stay put during brewing.

Add tea to the basket by hand.

Next comes the most manual aspect of using the Tea Maker, loading its basket with tea and its kettle jug with water. Decant your desired amount of water into the jug using the handle’s volume markers as a guide. While these labels are nice to have, they’re listed in mL units only — which is fine if the metric system floats your boat.

I wish I could see the water level in ounces too since I’m more comfortable with these measures. To add tea simply scoop tea leaves into the basket (don’t forget to remove and replace its lid) using the included spoon. With the ingredients present, you’re ready to start brewing.

Start brewing at the touch of a button.

All the machine’s controls reside on the base in front of the kettle’s socket. Hit the “Tea Type” button to cycle through the Tea Maker’s six brewing modes: Green, Black, White, Herbal, Oolong and Custom. Once you’ve made your selection, just tap the big Tea button to kick off the brewing cycle. Depending on the mode, the Tea Maker will then heat its water supply to the matching ideal temperature: 212 degrees Fahrenheit for black and herbal (100 Celsius), 195 degrees F for oolong (90.6 C), 185 degrees F for white (85 C), 175 degrees F for green (79.4 C). To accommodate unusual blends, use the custom mode to adjust the brewing temperature and steep time manually. There are dedicated keys for this on either side of the LCD screen.

The brewing basket lowers and raises by itself.

When the kettle’s contents hit the correct temperature, you’re in for a show. Magnetically attached, the brew basket slowly and automatically lowers into the hot water bath to soak. Tea leaves then infuse flavor into the water for the allotted steep time, after which the basket raises back out of the water of its own accord. This action not only precisely controls tea infusion, but also means the machine can operate unattended.

The Tea Maker works as a standard electric kettle too.

Additionally by filling the machine the night before, you can program the Tea Maker to prepare a fresh morning pot. To that end the brewer also features a “keep warm” function designed to keep your tea nice an hot for as long as 60 minutes. For safety reasons removing the carafe will also deactivate the feature so remember to re-engage it when you’re done pouring.

    Performance

Breville makes a point to explain in the manual that Tea Maker is “not calibrated for commercial or scientific use,” but my thermocouple tests confirmed the device was quite accurate. Temperature readings I logged were within 1 to 3 degrees off what the Tea Maker displayed them to be. Of course, the Tea Maker lagged a few seconds behind the more sensitive thermocouple device.

Tea I brewed through the Breville Tea Maker was consistently quite good, though I admit I’m much more of a coffee guzzler than a chai swiller. I also prefer my tea strong; thankfully the appliance also allows you to tweak brewing strength separately within each of its brewing modes, essentially by increasing its steep time. I’m also fond of the Breville’s basket agitation function which will raise and lower the basket during brewing to further concentrate the final product.

Of course, the Breville’s robotic brewing abilities can’t bend the laws of physics and make pots of tea faster than traditional tea kettles. The machine still has to boil its pot of water first before steeping which, depending on how much liquid you’re brewing, requires about 6 to 7 minutes. Add to this a standard soak time of 3 to 4 minutes and the whole process demands on the order of 10 or 12 minutes of your time. It’s just as easy to make single or double cups with the Breville Tea Maker, however, and the less volume of water you use, the faster it will come to temperature.

    Conclusion

Is the $250 Breville One-Touch Tea Maker for you? If you’re the type who’s devoted to the art of home tea brewing and seek a machine that’s very capable and highly automated, without a doubt this appliance will satisfy. Of course not everyone can or should spend this much just for a quality domestic cuppa. If cash happens to be tight but you still crave a flexible tea brewer, another fine option is the $100 Mr. Coffee Tea Maker and Kettle. While it lacks a robotic basket for trouble-free steeping and less deft temperature control, Mr. Coffee’s more affordable tea machine offers similar presets for specific tea varieties.

Those who require a kitchen device that can brew coffee and contains an electric kettle able to heat water accurately within a wide temperature range, look no further than the $300 Oxo Barista Brain 12-cup brewing system. It may cost an extra $50 but the Oxo’s hybrid abilities will appeal to both coffee and tea addicts alike.

The Breville btm800XL one touch tea maker is not your average tea maker. With this tea maker, you can stray beyond your average black tea leaves with this electric kettle that has been designed to brew tea.

It can brew any type of tea including oolong tea, Pu-erh tea, white tea, green tea, and even black tea.

Features that you should look out for the Breville btm800XL one touch tea maker

The Breville one touch goes the extra mile; it doesn’t just brew tea for you, it also steeps it, which eliminates the need of having to wait for long so that your leaves can infuse.

The innovatively created and designed tea basket in the interior lowers and rises during the brewing cycle to allow the best infusion of your teas to occur.

The Breville is fully programmable, although it can also be used to make common types of tea and hot water for coffee, instant soup or noodles.

The Breville one touch operates on 1500 watts of power and it comes with an easy to understand instruction manual that explains the features of the tea maker in great length.

The tea maker is also long lasting being constructed from quality German made glass.

Other features worth to remind are the automatic start button, LCD display, and stay warm features that can keep your tea or boiled water warm for as long as one hour.

    Pros

    • Amazing features and the specifications included in the design.
    • The kettle is extremely user-friendly.
    • Temperature settings can be customized.
    • The Breville electric kettle remembers the user’s preferred program settings so as to ensure consistent performance and results.
    • It is very easy to clean and maintain.
    • The kettle comes with a tea type feature that allows you to select whether you are brewing custom, herbal, oolong, green, black or white tea.
    • The kettle also has a backlit LCD timer that makes it possible for you to set the correct brew time and temperature.

    Cons

    • The Breville does not have a replaceable carafe. Upon damage, it can be very hard to repair the kettle.
    • The tea basket inside has holes that are rather large for some strains of tea. Sometimes bits of leaves escape into the brewed tea.
    • The carafe may be a bit too heavy to handle with one hand when full.
    • Users are generally advised not to submerge the carafe in water.
    • Since this is a sophisticated and high-end piece of kitchen equipment, the price tag may be a bit too steep especially compared to some of the more affordable models in the market.
    • There are a few plastic components that touch the water. Although they are plastic, the components are also BPA free.

    Does it worth the investment?

The Breville one touch tea maker is definitely full of features and it has been designed to improve the user experience. The one-touch tea maker has a digital display panel that has corresponding controls that help you adjust water, delays, auto start, steep time and much more. It features a three prong cable, a separate tool for scooping your tea and a one-year limited warranty.

The moving motion of the basket allows water to circulate easily around the tea leaves so that maximum infusion can take place. The teapot automatically lowers the basket once the tea maker reaches the correct temperature. You can set a timer so that you can also wake up to your favorite brew.

Like most products in the Breville line, this Breville one touch is not cheap, but it is absolutely worth the investment due to its impressive features and specifications which helps to ensure that the tea brewing process is fast, simple and efficient.

Some things you may want to be aware of:

    • Make sure that the power base does not come into contact with water to protect the electrical components of the kettle.
    • Ensure that the glass kettle has cooled completely before immersing in water to preserve the integrity of the glass.
    • The only components that should be cleaned in a dishwasher include the glass tea kettle lid, the tea basket, and the scoop.

General precautions should be taken while using it like, don’t pour cold water in the hot carafe as it can break down the glass, do not submerge the product in the water while washing it as it can damage the product if water goes into the circuitry.

Breville One-Touch Tea Maker is proven to be an incredible appliance if you base it on the reviews that most of the users have posted on the internet. Most of its users enjoy the use of this tea maker as this allows them to create different kinds of tea in an effortless manner. They also enjoy the ability of the tea maker to set the brewing of tea at a programmed time. The users are also pleased with the well-lit buttons of the tea maker and its solid controls. The tea maker is also known to be a good investment. Because it allows anyone to save a substantial amount of time when preparing tea since it can be easily navigated.

But Breville One-Touch Tea Maker is also known to have its own drawbacks. Some users find the appliance as overly expensive. Its carafe cannot be washed and cleaned under running water. So its users are required to provide the appliance with special care and attention when cleaning it. It is not also dishwasher safe. But the negative reviews provided by some of the users of Breville One-Touch Tea Maker are outnumbered by the great reviews provided by those who are greatly satisfied with it. Considering the many great features of this appliance, it is no longer surprising why a lot of people find the utmost pleasure and satisfaction when using it. Despite the expensiveness of this tea maker. You can still expect it to be worth its price since it is created out of high-quality materials. This is the main reason why you should consider investing in it.

I have the Breville One Touch Tea Maker and while I was in the process of moving I guess there was a bit of water inside and now there are small rust colored spots inside the pot and on the metal piece that the basket attaches to. I’ve tried vinegar but it didn’t help:(

Has anyone used something chemical like CLR ? Would it be alright if I washed it a zillion times after?

I don’t know what “ CLR ” stands for, but I would recommend trying citrus essence or citric acid before going for chemicals. Those are far more powerful than vinegar, but still foodsafe, and I can say from experience that citric acid is really good at cleaing anything metal(I once accidentally cleaned a small kitchen unit by sloshing the contents of a descaled water heater over its metal top – it was all shiny, including the previously rusty-brown looking parts, after I had wiped it dry).

Scroll to bottom you will see two types of cleaners – Garrett at Mandala recommended the Zojirushi cleaner – I have used it on my breville and it works wonders!

    I’ll try both suggestions. Thanks!

So glad I found this thread! I love my Breville but the brown discoloration on the bottom was driving me nuts – cream of tartar would improve it, but there was a LOT of elbow grease involved…and it was really short lived!

Anyway, I went ahead and bought both cleaners to try them out in hopes that they work (since I have a lot of tea stained cups as well – black tea and white porcelain really just don’t get along over time).

I do have a few quick questions for those who have used this, though. Since I’ll be using this on the Breville and not the Zojirushi, will I still use the recommended 2 tbsp of powder? And will I just put it on and scrub, or add it to the water and let it boil/sit overnight like the manual advises?

Also – are the ingredients in the cleaner on their labels? I assume they are food safe but in retrospect probably should have checked before buying… I think I was just so eager for a shiny teamaker I kind of spaced on the logistics, haha.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I believe they are all organic or at least natural cleaners. I never had a problem using them. Good question on “how much” I just poured in about a tablespoon to be honest I didn’t really use much but I remember I added a bit more. Garret of Mandala would be the best to ask this of. I put mine in with water – let it soak for about an hour non heated and the stuff just came right off! 🙂

Breville One Touch is reserved for the refined tea brewer. Its versatility and practicality will make it one of the coolest machine in the modern kitchen.

How to Use the Breville One Touch Tea Maker

This tool is reserved for the refined tea brewer. The ones who are not satisfied with anything a waiter throws at them when ordering a cup of tea and rather drink water than crappy tea.

This is for those tea lovers who make their guests longing for the emergency exit when they just ask for “a tea”. There is no such thing as just “a tea”.

    Tea is like music.

This was the main idea behind creating the Breville BTM800XL One-Touch tea maker. Its versatility and practicality makes it one of the coolest machine in the kitchen.
It has to look cool for the price they ask for it, anyway. After all we are talking about an electric kettle what we can get for $20 on Amazon. Also, we wouldn’t like to shun away from mentioning its problems.

When ywe pop over to Amazon and read the reviews, you can quickly see the problems the state-of-the-art tea maker faces. As it is expected the mechanics of some units couldn’t cope with the struggle of the real life and break down. This wouldn’t be a biggie if the customer service could solve the issues a bit better but they are rather sluggish. We hope they improve on this, soon.

Some people also express concerns about rust like residues and floating particles around which are mostly leftover tea and hard water pieces. These can be annoying as it ruins the awesome looking glass carafe but are considered normal. A special cleaning product can be purchased to get rid of them if you aren’t into scrubbing it off manually.

It’s worth to mention that it shouldn’t be submerged into water ever.
Although it is an all glass and metal tea maker it has some plastic parts on which the basket moves up and down in the water. Naturally it is a BPA-free plastic but if plastics are a concern to you then this product won’t make you happy ever.

Luckily, none of the issues are widespread on any scale. Nothing proves it better than it is still maintaining an almost 5 star rating from plenty of happy tea loving people.

The difference between a cheap kettle and the Breville tea maker lies exactly where the difference is between a bag of Tetley form Target and the Jin Jun Mei.

The fanciest feature of Breville BTM800XL is the automatic tea basket which lowers and lifts the tea according to selected settings. The water temperature and the brewing time can be set exactly to our taste with the custom settings. However Breville takes the weight of decision making off from our shoulders and offers some presets for the most common tea types in terms of temperatures and brewing times:

    • Green tea 80°C for 3:00 minutes
    • White tea 85°C 3:00 minutes
    • Oolong tea 90°C 3:00 minutes
    • Herbal tea 100°C 4:00 minutes
    • Black tea 100°C 2:00 minutes

There is also this awesome basket cycle feature that continuously auto lifts and lowers the Basket during the tea brewing cycle. This movement loosens the tea leaves within the Basket, allowing the heated water to circulate freely around the tea leaves for maximum infusion.

The keep warm feature doesn’t really worth any mentioning as it can be found on even the cheapest tea makers so it’s not like an innovation of some sort but rather a basic function of a tea maker. It keeps the tea warm at around 70°C – 80°C depending of the brewing temperature for an hour.

The function that still worth to mention is the auto start. This feature allows us to program the specific time when the Tea Maker will automatically turn on and start either a tea brewing cycle or water heating cycle. What else one could dream of in a cold morning afterall?

These features and buttons are all cool and dandy but how do they judge throwing out a whole bucket of cash? After all getting a neat little kettle which looks cool and cost the fraction of this does the job as well. And anyway, having a great tea is all about having a ritual isn’t it?

Well, that may be true. But if we are a busy person who can’t spare a half an hour daily for the tea rituals and still want to have a good cup of tea then we have little other options to choose from.

Surely, we can train our housekeeper to make the tea ready when we arrive from the morning jog. But this sounds rather an enormously impossible task comparing to just pressing a couple of buttons and having something exactly the way we like it.

How to Use the Breville One Touch Tea Maker

    Overall score: 78/100

    Tested October 2018

This is a one touch coffee machine that will brew espresso, cappuccino or lattes at the touch of a button. It’s ideal for fans of milky coffees. It takes ground coffee as well as E.S.E. pods, and while the price is reasonable for this type of machine, it doesn’t feel very sturdy.

How to Use the Breville One Touch Tea Maker

Quiet – this product has been scientifically assessed and found to be quieter than most in this category.

How to Use the Breville One Touch Tea Maker

    GHI Expert Verdict

For milky coffees, it’ll steam or froth the milk automatically, but you’ll have to fill it with ground coffee and tamp it manually. There are two size options for cappuccino and latte and it will brew single or double espressos as well, but the size of the drink dispensed is automatic and cannot be adjusted to your cup size. Our coffee tasters enjoyed the rich nutty aroma and well balanced flavour of the espresso and the crema was thick and sturdy. The milk frother is easy to use, but frothed milk was more foamy than we would expect.

    • Removable water tank
    • Removable milk tank can be stored in the fridge between uses

How to Use the Breville One Touch Tea Maker

If you want to produce the best flavour in your tea, steep time and water temperature are crucial. That’s why the Breville One-Touch Tea Maker is making its rounds as one of the most revolutionary kitchen gadgets out there.

Although the price of this machine may cost up to $250 US ($349 CAD), its functions make it worth the purchase. The machine comes along with preset modes for popular tea types (like black, green, white, oolong and herbal), as well as custom parameters for target temperature and steep time. It is also incredibly easy to operate and clean, and is beautifully designed.

The Tea Maker is a German-made Schott glass kettle, which is durable and stain resistant. It consists of two main parts: a power base platform and an electric kettle carafe, or the “Jug.” The power base features a small LCD screen that displays information such as water temperature and brew time. It holds up to 1.2 litres of water, and can act as an ordinary electric kettle when using just the “Hot Water” function.

How to Use the Breville One Touch Tea Maker

My favourite thing about this machine is exactly what its made for – brewing the perfect cup of tea. It is fully programmable for all types of tea, including oolong, black, green, white, and herbal tea. Plus, you can even customize your own water temperatures and tea times for whatever tea you might have at hand.

Different tea varieties like black, green, white, and oolong require exact water temperatures and controlled brew times to ensure the perfect cup of tea. This will result in a tea that contains just the right amount of unique flavours and aromas that develop while brewing.

Using the machine is incredibly simple, too! All you really need to do is remove the kettle’s lid, take out the stainless steel tea basket out from inside the jug and fill the jug with water. The tea basket actually clings in place inside the kettle’s long post, as it is magnetized. This makes taking out the basket incredibly easy, as it isn’t fixed in place (which also makes cleaning easier, too). Loading the basket with tea is obviously quite simple – you just take the lid off and fill up with your desired amount of loose tea with the included measuring teaspoon.

How to Use the Breville One Touch Tea Maker

After that, you place the lid back on, put the basket back on the post inside the kettle and you’re ready to go! All you need to do now is hit your “Tea Type” button to choose which tea type you want made (green, black, white, oolong, herbal or custom for unusual blends). Once you’re done your selection, just hit the big Tea button to start the brewing cycle.

The Tea Maker will first heat the water until it has reached the desired temperature. At this point, the tea basket will slowly lower (which is all done through the power of magnets) into the hot water bath to soak. Once the soak time has completed, the basket raises back out of the water on its own. That’s right – this machine is 100% automatic (I mean, aside from you having to put your tea leaves in the basket and water in the jug).

You can also program the Tea Maker to prepare a fresh morning pot all on its own by using the “Auto Start” button. There is also a “Keep Warm” function that keeps your tea hot for as long as 60 minutes (but be sure to re-activate the button after removing the jug from the base, as it will automatically cancel heating for safety reasons).

The “Basket” button will make the basket continuously auto lift and lower into the water during steep time, if you want movement to allow water to circulate freely around the tea leaves for maximum infusion. This feature can only be used when you hit the “Tea” button and once the water has reached the desired temperature and the steep time has begun. This feature is recommended when you are making between 1000mL-1200mL of water, as it can significantly increase the rate of infusion and affect tea strength – you might also want to reduce brew time if you use this feature.

I found the Tea Maker to create the perfect cup of tea. My first time using it I noticed the flavour of my tea popped out 10-fold. I always knew that water boiling had an effect on tea leaves, but that thought didn’t really solidify until I got this machine – and my, what a difference. I love that the Tea Maker allows you to choose different strengths of teas, because some teas I like strong, whereas others I cannot stand too strong. The basket agitation function is also useful for increasing strength and flavour of the tea.

I also really like that you can use this kettle as just a regular electric boiler. I’ve been wanting to get rid of my stainless steel kettle for quite some time, and switch to glass (because glass is best, and most neutral in terms of any type of chemical compounds leeching out of it). Overall, this tea maker is an amazing machine, and would make a great addition to any kitchen and tea lover alike.

In summary, here are the pros of the Breville One-Touch Tea Maker:

    – brews and steeps automatically
    – works as a tea maker as well as a variable temperature electric kettle
    – presets to brew the perfect type of tea, whether that be black, green, white, oolong, herbal or custom
    – jug is made out of glass, which is healthier than other type of kettles (aluminum, plastic, etc.)
    – “Auto Start” allows you to make a morning pot all on its own without you getting out of bed!

There aren’t many cons, but here are some things you may want to consider:

    – the machine is costly – it is $250 USD or $349 CAD
    – the carafe is only labelled in metric units (this didn’t bother me, but to some it may)
    – the minimum amount of tea you can make is 500mL, so be prepared to drink at least 2 cups. Great for family and guests!
