Fans have determined that the best episode of the 2nd season of "Law & Order" is none other than its premiere outing, titled "Confession." According to IMDb, the episode beat out the competition with an average user rating of 7.9 stars out of 10. It's not too difficult to see why many may look back on the episode fondly, as it presented a major shake-up to the status quo.
In a surprising twist, "Confession" centers on the murder of Sergeant Max Greevey (George Dzundza), one-half of the crime-solving detective duo that fans had gotten familiar with in the show's first season. To see one of the ostensible leads of the series killed off brought a real sense of stakes, as well as a ratcheting up of the emotion for the rest of the cast. But for as much as the episode was an ending to some of the show's original dynamics, it was also the start of something new. The episode was the first appearance of the charming Sergeant Phil Cerreta (Paul Sorvino), who would occupy the vacant sleuthing role left by Greevey for the rest of Season 2.
"Confession" remains one of the most shocking episodes of "Law & Order," showing for the first time that even the show's beloved lead characters were not always safe from danger. It was tense, it was emotional, and it got the show's second season off to a very strong start.
