When it comes to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, fans still have so many questions concerning the history of some of J.K. Rowling’s biggest characters. Especially Voldemort. However, Tryangle Films has recently released, Voldemort: Origins of the Heir, a fan-made film detailing Voldemort’s young life and his rise to power. As of yesterday, the short film is available on YouTube for free.
Voldemort: Origins of the Heir, or also known as VOOTH, focuses on the struggles between Grisha Mac Laggen, the heir of Gryffindor, and Slytherin Tom Riddle, who will later become Lord Voldemort. Told mostly through flashbacks, Mac Laggen is desperate to find Riddle when a descendant of Hufflepuff is found dead in her home. The 52-minute film is already receiving high praise from fans all over the world.
Since the beginning, Tryangle, the filmmakers behind the project, have been extremely vocal about reminding fans that this is a non-commercial work that isn’t endorsed by J.K. Rowling or Warner Bros. The project started as a crowdfunding campaign back in 2016, but Warner Bros. quickly put the campaign on hold. After some discussion, Tryangle was able to make the film, but only on a non-profit basis with a release on YouTube.
While re-reading the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the creators became obsessed with Riddle’s rise into the most feared wizard of all, Voldemort. After digging into the lore and other stories of the world, Tryangle has created a story that blends wonderfully with the universe while remaining a strong story in its own right. The creators asked themselves:
What made Tom Riddle become Voldemort? What happened in those years, and what really went down at Hogwarts when he came back? There are some clues in the books which have not been transposed at all in the movies, but a lot goes unspoken. This is the story we want to tell: the rise of the Dark Lord before Harry Potter and his first demise.
The film is available now on YouTube and is the perfect thing to hold fans over until Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald releases later this year!
