Fans are asking what happened to Trinidad James’s eye after the rapper covered up his face while being interviewed with Funny Marco.
James, real name Nicholaus Joseph Williams, was interviewed by Marco for Breakbeat Media with the segment releasing to YouTube on Tuesday, January 17.
The 35-year-old rapper sat down to talk everything from the recent controversies surrounding Kanye West as well as his latest sartorial choices.
James made a pretty unique fashion choice himself, appearing on the American talk show wearing a bear mask. When he finally revealed his face, Trinidad James showed his “good eye” to Marco, which left viewers questioning what had happened to him. Let’s take a look.
What happened to Trinidad James’s eye?
There is nothing wrong with Trinidad James’s right eye, the rapper was just wearing a prosthetic eye over the top for dramatic flair. James shared an Instagram video the same day the Funny Marco interview released, showing there is nothing wrong with his eye.
“Do you mind if we look at each other? Or you want me to just look at you today like that?” Funny Marco asked James, who was wearing a bear hat covering his entire face.
“I’m looking at you. But you got to look at my good eye,” James responds. He then proceeds to remove the hat, revealing the fake eye underneath.
Trinidad James wore the fake eye in UGLY music video
On October 31, 2019, Trinidad James released the music video for his single, UGLY. Directed by Mike Marasco, the video gets suitably spooky for Halloween, as the rapper sports a bulging prosthetic eye. He also wore this eye on the single’s cover art.
The song’s lyrics center on the duality of the word ‘ugly’. James touches on his insecurities and criticizes his appearance while also rapping about his financial successes. “I’m feeling ugly again / My teeth looking ugly again / That check looking ugly again,” James raps.
‘Ugly’ is often used as a slang term to describe a significant amount of money, when the amount is too big to even look at.
Trinidad James has worn the prosthetic eye in another interview
This is not the first instance that Trinidad James has sported a fake eye during an interview.
Besides his work as a musician, James is also the co-host of Sole Collector’s Full Size Run talk show. In November 2019, shortly after the release of the UGLY music video, James co-interviewed Deion Sanders from everything about sneakers to life lessons. In the interview, James wore the same fake eye that he had worn in the UGLY music video.
For those who knew Trinidad James for his sneaker chat and not his music, this came as quite the shock. “Please tell me this was filmed on Halloween,” one viewer tweeted after viewing the Full Size Run segment.
The Weeknd carried out a similar promotional bid for his album After Hours. The Blinding Lights singer would appear on red carpets, at awards shows, and in interviews, with bandages and prosthetics, reflecting the album’s story in physical form.
Trinidad James suffered a head injury as a child
While nothing has happened to Trinidad James’s eye, he did injure his head as a child.
“I had a head injury when I was younger, I was walking on some stone steps in Trinidad and missed a step and when I fell, I split open my head in the middle,” James revealed in an interview.
He was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, but was raised in Canada and the United States. After moving between several cities, the family settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where Trinidad James was raised.
