The poem words, “when I die, give what’s left of me away,” soothed viewers of last night’s NCIS after the shock twist ending.

March 9th’s episode of NCIS hit with a tragic ending, witnessing the final moments of Fornell’s daughter Emily, who suffered a relapse.

The full episode explored the underbelly of food trucks, with a dead body being found in the freezer of one. The real blow however came in the last scenes, when Tobias Fornell received a life-altering phone call.

Fornell contacted Gibbs, who rushed to hospital to be by Emily’s side. Emily had suffered a relapse, and been found surrounded by pills. After being rushed to the ER, Emily tragically died.

What was the ‘when I die’ poem read in last night’s NCIS?

The death of Emily was a sad twist, but one eased by the touching words read. Director Vance read a poem in the final moments, which spoke of death from a different perspective.

Epitaph by Merrit Malloy is a popular one, often read during funeral services and memorials for its heart-warming take on life after death.

The poem reads:

When I die
Give what’s left of me away
To children
And old me that wait to die.

And if you need to cry,
Cry for your brother
Walking the street beside you.
And when you need me,
Put your arms
Around anyone
And give them
What you need to give to me.

I want to leave you something,
Something better
Than words
Or sounds.

Look for me
In the people I’ve known
Or loved,
And if you cannot give me away,
At least let me live on in your eyes
And not your mind.

You can love me most
By letting
Hands touch hands,
By letting bodies touch bodies,
And by letting go
Of children
That need to be free.

Love doesn’t die,
People do.
So, when all that’s left of me
Is love,
Give me away.
