Jeane was born to Gladys Pearl Baker (mother) and her co-worker and lover Charles Stanley Gifford (father). Her parents worked together and started dating in 1925, when Gladys was still married to her second husband, though they were separated.
However, after a few years, Gladys let Jeane be adopted by Albert Bolender and his wife Ida Bolender and was forced to move to the city for a job. It was only after Gladys bought a small house in Hollywood that she moved in with her daughter Jeane.
In January 1934, Gladys suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and had to depend on medication and hospitalization for the rest of her life until she died.
