One of the ongoing storylines on "CSI: Miami" involved Horatio Caine's (David Caruso) son Kyle Harmon (Evan Ellingson). For those uninitiated, Caine fathered Kyle while he was undercover using the alias John Walden. Kyle never knew his real father and grew up in a series of foster homes. By the time the series takes place, Kyle is a teenager in an adult prison for committing a series of felonies, including stealing a boat. Feeling responsible for his son, Caine tries to protect him from the dangerous prison environment, so long as Kyle stays on the right side of the law.

Jeffrey De Serrano plays an unnamed prison guard working the facility where Kyle is incarcerated, in two episodes that both take place during Season 6. In "Inside Out," when Caine realizes that his son's life is in danger, he enlists the help of a recently escaped and recaptured prison inmate to guard him. In "Raising Caine," Kyle gets released from prison, which leads to a custody battle between Caine and his ex, Julia (‎Elizabeth Berkley). In both episodes, De Serrano's character dutifully supervises Kyle while he waits to learn his fate.
