If you are like me and enjoy European cinema, then the 2021 psychological thriller “Here Before,” directed by Stacey Gregg, will likely pique your interest because of its convoluted plot that puts together all sorts of themes of loss, reincarnation, and duplicity.

The film, set in Northern Ireland and developed by BBC Films and Saban Films under the cinematography of Chloe Thompson, puts together a story that might seem complex to understand if you don’t pay close attention, so, I will try to examine the movie’s plot, delivering a thorough study of its captivating narrative and presenting what I consider is my interpretation of the film’s ending.

What Is Here Before About?

The film’s central figure is Laura, a mother who is still having a hard time accepting the fact that her daughter Josie died in a horrible car accident years ago.

As she navigates the turbulent waters of grief, her life is made much more challenging when a new family moves in next door, and their daughter, Megan, forms an unexpected bond with Laura.

The mystery is introduced when Megan disputes her parents’ claims that she hasn’t been to the local school or the cemetery where Josie is interred.

Laura grows more intrigued by Megan as she starts to consider the possibility that she could be the reincarnation of her deceased daughter. When Megan recalls facts of the tragic car accident that claimed Josie’s life—things that Megan surely shouldn’t know—it confirms her suspicions.

This knowledge leads Laura to think that her daughter Megan has returned to Laura’s body, driving her into an emotional tidal wave that nearly overwhelms her.

The movie adds a number of twists that defy the theory as the plot progresses, though. Brendan’s earlier assertion that he was unfamiliar with Marie is refuted by Laura, who discovers images of Megan on her husband Brendan’s phone and a photo of the two of them together at a party.

The discovery alters the plot’s direction and suggests that Megan may have connections to the family that goes beyond spiritual reincarnation.

In a climactic moment, Laura bravely confronts Marie, accusing her of using Megan as a pawn in a revenge plot against Brendan. As tensions escalate, Marie retaliates by violently stabbing Laura with a sharp shard of glass.

Amidst the chaos, Laura, plagued by hallucinations, manages to profess her unwavering love for Josie before succumbing to unconsciousness.

As the movie nears its conclusion, a sense of recovery embraces Laura, who makes a poignant and bittersweet trip to Josie’s final resting place. The camera pans with tenderness, capturing the depth of her emotions as she delicately places a bouquet of vibrant flowers at the foot of the grave.

It is in this heartfelt act that we witness the subtle transformation within Laura, an acceptance of her daughter’s untimely passing, giving her the strength to begin the arduous journey of healing and moving forward.

It suggests that, despite her earlier obsession with the idea of her daughter’s rebirth, she has now come to terms with the reality of her loss.
