Windows only: Concerned you’re wasting disk space with duplicate photos but too cautious to go about wantonly deleting pics? Fire up VisiPics and find those dupes.
VisiPics is an extremely thorough program. Many duplicate checkers are limited to comparing the file name, size, and date of creation to compare files and flag them as duplicates. VisiPics uses an algorithm to examine each picture and compare it to the rest, seeking out similarities based on the actual image not just the parameters of the file. VisiPics allows you to specify the degree of filtration. On the strictest setting it looks for tiny differences to consider the images distinct, the looser you set the restrictions to more liberal it becomes in comparing items. An example of this in application: on the strictest setting VisiPics considered two photographs of the same person taken milliseconds apart where their facial expression had changed only very slightly to be identical pictures. When adjusted to a more lax setting it allows for greater variations in photographs and still considered them duplicates.
VisiPic is not the kind of program that you want unleash unsupervised on your photo collection, it certainly can’t tell if the difference between one photo and another is the difference between a genuine smile and a grimace. It is however an excellent tool for culling your collection, especially if you’re an avid photographer with a preference for use the burst mode when you’re shooting. Be forewarned, because Visipics actually compares the content of the photo instead of just the file metadata it is a CPU intensive process. Scanning 29,000 photographs during my test run of the software required approximately 2 hours of background processing while I used the computer for other tasks. For another photo comparison-engine check out Duplifinder . For a quicker, but less intensive method of scanning for duplicate files check out DoubleKiller .

Just as duplicate songs somehow find their way into music libraries, so do duplicate photos seem to crop up in photo collections. I think the most common culprit is human error, like when you forgetfully download the same batch of photos from your camera.
Whatever the cause, duplicates sure are a nuisance. Fortunately, there’s a great freeware utility that can find and remove them for you: VisiPics.
Start by selecting one or more drives and/or folders for VisiPics to scan. Then, set the Filter slider to Strict, Basic, Loose, or somewhere in between. That determines how hard the program will look for differences in your photos.
You see, VisiPics doesn’t just look for duplicate filenames–it actually examines the contents of each photo and looks for similarities. The results are presented in a column on the left side of the VisiPics window; just mouse over any given photo and its duplicate(s) to see a preview. To mark a duplicate for deletion, click it. (The program can also move duplicates to a separate folder in case you’d rather not delete them.)
I turned VisiPics loose on my My Pictures folder, which contains over four thousand photos. It took about 40 minutes to complete its scan, but it did an amazing job. I definitely recommend this handy app for anyone with a large photo library. I also recommend sending the author a donation if you find VisiPics useful.

Generic Company Place Holder VisiPics
If you spend any time with a camera at all, you have hundreds of pictures on your PC. Actually, you may have many hundreds of them, taking up gigabytes of storage space. But somehow, some way, no matter how good you think you are at managing your photos, you’ve most likely have duplicate pictures taking up a substantial amount of hard disk space. Trying to weed through them all and find duplicates is a wearying, thankless task. VisiPics does it all for you, and it won’t cost a penny.
Just run the VisiPics, and it finds duplicate photos–and it doesn’t rely on looking for duplicate file names, but actually compares the photos themselves. Before you run the program, tell it whether you want the comparison to be Strict, Basic, or Loose, which determines how strictly the program should compare photos. It then goes about its work and shows all duplicates on the left-hand side of the screen, side by side. Mouse over any photo and its duplicate, and you’ll see the photo in a preview pane. You can then make sure the photos are actually duplicates.
VisiPics deletes the duplicate photos as well; click any you want deleted. You can instead have them moved to a folder. I tested out VisiPics on seven folders with 359 photos, and it took a little more than three minutes to do its work. I used the Loose setting, and it found 68 photos it said were duplicates. About a quarter of those, though, were not actual duplicates, but rather the same scene taken from a slightly different angle. So make sure to carefully check to make sure that any duplicates are in fact duplicates.
Note: This program is donationware. It is free to try, but the author accepts and encourages donations towards further development.
Duplicate files waste precious space on your computers hard drive especially if you have an SSD and make your computers backups bigger for no good reason. Heres how you can free up some disk space.
Every program we recommend here comes with a clean installer that wont try to install toolbars and other junkware on your system. We hate that, too, so we spent time finding the good programs.
Find and Delete Duplicate Files the Easy Way
If you want to find and clean up files the easy way, theres no better tool for the job than Duplicate Cleaner Pro 4. It might not be free, but unlike the rest, its easy to use and comes chock full of features.
You can download a free trial and see for yourself whether you like it.
dupeGuru, dupeGuru Music Edition, and dupeGuru Pictures Edition
dupeGuru is a great application for this. Its completely free and comes in three flavors: dupeGuru, dupeGuru Music Edition, and dupeGuru Pictures Edition. The music and pictures editions are specialized for finding similar music files and pictures. For example, the music edition will find the same song, even if theyre in different MP3 files encoded at different bitrates. Or the pictures edition will find copies of the same photo even if theyve been resized, rotated, or slightly edited. This utility uses a fuzzy match algorithm and can find files that are very similar and not just completely identical.
Note: The dupeGuru site notes that Windows is no longer supported, but the links under old versions still work fine in Windows PCs.
dupeGuru is completely open-source. The installer wont attempt to drag any toolbars or other junk onto your system, and it isnt even trying to upsell you to anything.
The interface is simple, but easy to use open it, add a few folders or drives you want to scan, and click Scan. Youll see a list of duplicate files, and you can easily select and delete the files you want to remove. Double-click a file in the list to open and examine it.
DigitalVolcanos Duplicate Cleaner Free
Note: use the non-CNET download link.
Digital Volcanos Duplicate Cleaner is another good option. They sell a paid version of this application with more features, but the free version provides the basic duplicate-scanning features with a nice interface. The installer redirects you through Download.com, but it didnt try to install any junkware on our system when we installed it. DigitalVolcano is trying to make money the old-fashioned way by providing a good product and hoping people buy the upgraded paid version with more features.
Duplicate Cleaner provides a pretty interface that will scan your computer and any connected external drives for duplicate files. The pro version also scans for very-similar images and music files that are slightly different, but the free version has the basic duplicate-file-finding features.
This applications advantage over dupeGuru is its prettier interface. It holds your hand a bit more than dupeGuru does.
VisiPics
Use VisiPics to scan for image files that are very similar, even if they arent completely identical. For example, VisiPics will find resized, rotated, edited, and otherwise-modified image files and flag them as duplicates. You may not need these multiple similar copies of photos and other images, so VisiPics can help you here.
dupeGuru and other duplicate-file-removing applications can also do this, but VisiPics has an interface designed with photos in mind. If you have a large collection of digital photos, VisiPics is probably the application to use. It will provide a more visual interface for looking at those photos and clearing our your duplicates.
VisiPics is free donationware, technically and wont try to install any junk on your system. Read our guide to cleaning up your duplicate photos with VisiPics for more instructions.
Duplicate File Finder
Duplicate File Finder is another barebones-yet-functional open-source application with a no-frills interface. It actually has a different approach from other applications. It looks for files that have the exact same size and only then compares them to see if theyre duplicates of each other.
This means you wont get the almost-but-not-quite-exact matching features other applications provide. However, it also means that Duplicate File Finder should be even faster at scanning through a larger set of files. if you only care about files that are completely identical and not just almost identical, you can save time with Duplicate File Finder. It doesnt have the prettiest interface, but it definitely works.
This isnt a complete list of all the duplicate-file-finding utilities for Windows out there. There are many other ones, often with installers packed full of junkware and toolbars. The above utilities should do the job without messing with your system or demanding money.
Remember, dont delete duplicate files in system folders for example, under C:\Program Files or C:\Windows. Programs may depend on having duplicate copies of certain files in specific places. Leave system files alone and only clean up your own personal data files documents, images, music files, videos, and everything else you might have a duplicate copy of.

Description
VisiPics is a tiny, free application for Windows that will search for duplicate photos. You can find duplicate images using three different filters: (1) Strict (will return almost identical results – the image is the same or slightly different), (2) Basic and (3) Loose (with much more differences).
Additionally, you can also use the “Auto-Select” feature which will mark images with smaller, uncompressed, lower resolution copies as duplicates.
The program has other features such as a unignore, unselect (deselect), ignore the folders or files. This software will work with most major formats: JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PCX, TIFF, TGA and RAW images. According to the author, the software has been tested with 100.000 pictures with a size of 15 GB and the results were available in approximately 3 hours.
Another advantage is the ability to delete duplicate files while the program is scanning for them – you don’t have to wait to finish the scan. Although this program was made exclusively for Windows users, various other reviews claimed that the program runs great on Linux using Wine.
Note: This app uses ImageMagick (great app to manipulate most popular image formats) libraries to load pictures.
VisiPics Review
Important: Make sure that you backup your files and test the program on a small folder with just a few files. You have to understand how this tool works before any experiment takes place.
I know several reasons of why I would want to delete duplicate pics: space, multiple images made from different angles and the most disturbing – same image present in 2-3-4 folders on the same hard drive. The answer to this problem is a free software named VisiPics.
Download and install the application in seconds, and you will be enchanted by an intuitive, user-friendly interface.
Before you start using this application, please be careful at the following. This program uses it’s own algorithm to identify duplicate images – not just duplicate file names.
Therefore, it will detect photos taken from a “slightly” different angle, and although for many people who want to keep only one copy (the one they like more) this is another great feature, others should consider this a warning if they want to keep all of them.
My recommendation for everyone would be to access the “Help” tab from the main interface and to read at least the “Tutorial – Basics” section which will take you less than 1 minute to understand how it works.
It contains two small paragraphs: how to “To start finding duplicate pictures” and “To delete your duplicates.” I wanted to write about how to use this tool, but I would’ve “copy” the information found in its Help file.
Once again, I would like to repeat what I just said: backup your files, read the help file (it’s small) and test the program.
As a conclusion, VisiPics is one of best options to remove duplicate images from your computer and if you find it useful, I am sure that the author will appreciate your donation.
