How to change contact pictures in android

Adding pictures or a photo to a contact on your Android mobile is a very convenient way to quickly see who is calling you. This is especially important if you have vision problems and find it hard to read the name displayed. My recommendation is to add pictures to the contacts so you can see them easier when you go to dial or receive a phone call.

By default, Android puts a generic block letter for a person not established as a contact for their image. And, depending on who the person is, you might want to change the picture to something that makes them easier to identify when chiming in.

Note: For this article, I’m using stock Android 8.0 Oreo on a Nexus 6P. The steps may vary a bit depending on the version of Android and other software the handset manufacturer puts on your device for managing contacts.

Add Photos to Android Contacts

Step 1

Launch the Phone app and find the contact you would like to change the picture for and tap it to open the contact card. Or, if you have multiple accounts linked on your phone it might be easier to open the Contacts app and the account the person is linked to.

If you have multiple accounts linked on your phone it might be easier to open the Contacts app and the account the person is linked to.

Step 2

Once you select the contact, enter Edit Mode first. Otherwise, you might trigger a call by tapping their picture. In Oreo, tap the edit icon in the lower-right corner of the screen. Once in Edit Mode, tap the person’s image and then you should get the option to either take a picture or choose one.

Step 3

Edit the picture to your liking and make sure to save the changes when finished.

Usually, I will just change a contact’s picture on-the-fly. I can open the Phone app to the recently called list, and tap the vertical ellipsis on the upper-right corner of the icon to go into Edit Mode and choose a different picture.

Again, steps will vary depending on your device. Still, the idea is mostly the same on all versions. For example, everything looks completely different on my HTC One but knowing what to look for it’s easy to figure out.

If you have a different version of Android or software specific to the manufacturer, let us know what I might have left out in the comment section below.

The Android operating system allows its users to add pictures to their contacts. This is not only a way to personalize and decorate your contacts list but it is very practical as well.

Let’s say that you have two or more contacts with a similar name. If one of those contacts called you right now, you would have to carefully read their display name or number in order to figure out who exactly is calling you.

By adding pictures to your contacts, you will always know who’s calling you in a matter of seconds. It’s also useful to anyone who has a better memory for faces than for names.

Setting Pictures to Contacts on Android Phones

This section of the article will show you how you can set pictures to contacts on your Android device. The whole procedure is quite easy and won’t take much time at all.

Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Tap on Contacts on your Android mobile phone.
  2. Go through your Contacts list and search for a contact that you want to add a picture to. When you have found the contact that you’ve been looking for, tap once to view the details.
  3. From there, you’ll be able to see your contact’s number, connection type (Google, Viber, etc.), and picture if there is any (the picture should appear behind the contact’s name). We have created a TEST CONTACT for the purpose of this tutorial.

  4. Tap on Edit to view this contact’s configuration and details. You can change any information regarding your contact from there, including the profile picture.

  5. Tap on the camera icon and the Contact Photo window will appear.

The last step requires you to choose how you want to import an image for this particular contact. You can choose between the Image and the Take Picture options. If you want to choose an image from your phone’s gallery, tap on Image. If you want to take a live photo, tap on Take Picture.

After you’ve selected the picture that you want to use for this contact, you will have to crop it, as there’s a specific size that you can import. Android will allow you to do this using its cropping tool, so all that you have to do is select what you want to crop and tap on Done.

Finally, to save the changes that you’ve made, tap on Save, which is located in the top-right corner.

What to Do If You Can’t Add a Picture to a Certain Contact?

Android doesn’t allow users to set pictures for all types of contacts. That’s why you most likely won’t be able to set a photo for every contact on your Contacts list immediately. But what does “type” refer to here?

When you create/save a contact on your phone, you have the option to choose where exactly you want to save it. You can save the contact on your device, SIM card, or use your Google account as a medium.

Unfortunately, you can only set images for contacts with a Google account. If you’ve saved the selected contact on your SIM card or device, you won’t be able to select a picture to add.

The solution to this is simple. Add the same phone number but select Google when creating the contact.

In case you still can’t set a picture, make sure that your Android operating system is up to date.

Customize Your Contact List

Now that you know how to add pictures to your Android phone’s Contacts, it is time to have fun and redecorate your Contact list.

Do you tend to add pictures to your contacts? Do you use your Google account to store all your contact info, or do you prefer the slightly more old-fashioned options? Feel free to leave a comment in the comment section below!

Making a small change can be done easily on your Android, but it is sometimes difficult to do the same thing in an iOS or Windows operating system Smartphone. The first step is to go to your Android Smartphone’s Phone App. Now search for the particular contact whose contact pictures you want to change in your Android Smartphone. The next step can vary slightly across different phones, so you need to do it carefully.

In phones like Samsung, when you click on the contact, it will automatically dial the contact, so be careful. Once you have selected the contact you need to change the contact picture for, for this tap on the “Edit” button. In some Android phones it will be Edit, whereas in other Smartphones it will display a pencil icon. Using the Edit option you can edit all the details of the contact. Now tap on the Picture icon and it will open an Edit menu to edit the profile picture. You can add a new picture instantly using the mobile camera in your Android Smartphone or you can select a picture from the gallery. Once you have selected the picture you want to use as the contact pictures in your Android Smartphone, you can crop and make the necessary changes to the picture. You know what’s not cool? Having that default block letter as a contact picture for your favorite contacts in your phone. They’re your favorites! Your besties, your husband or wife, even your kids. C’mon guys, they deserve better than the first letter of their first name. It’s up to you to make this right. But don’t fret—we’re here to help. It’s kinda what we do.

Before we get started, it’s worth pointing out that this process may vary slightly between manufacturers. Since all the big ones—Samsung, LG, Huawei, etc.—all do their own thing where the dialer is concerned, it may look slightly different depending on what model you’re using. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to figure out what to do once you get started, because the contacts portion of most dialers isn’t that different.

Okay, ready? Let’s do this thing.

The first thing you’ll want to do is open the dialer (also known as the “Phone” app). From there, just find the contact you’d like to add/change the picture for.

How to change contact pictures in androidHow to change contact pictures in android

This is the part where things may vary depending on your handset. On most phones, you tap the picture itself to open the contact card. The primary exemption here is in the Favorites list on Samsung and Stock Android phones: tapping the image will call the contact. You’ll need to tap the little “i” on Samsung phones, or the three-dot overflow menu button on stock phones. In the full contact list, however, you can still just tap the picture. It’s stupid, really.

How to change contact pictures in android How to change contact pictures in androidHow to change contact pictures in android

Once on the contact card page, hit the “Edit” button—it may say the word “edit,” or it may just be a pencil icon. Either way, it should be in the upper right corner. Out of the phones I tested, the Huawei Honor 5X was the only one that had it in a different place—it’s at the bottom. Still, it should be pretty clear which icon to tap.

How to change contact pictures in android How to change contact pictures in androidHow to change contact pictures in android

This is the menu where you can edit everything dealing with that particular contact, not just the picture. But changing the image is pretty easy: just tap it. Tapping the picture will open an edit edit menu where you can take a new picture or select one from the Gallery, then crop it to your liking.

How to change contact pictures in android How to change contact pictures in androidHow to change contact pictures in android

Once chosen, it will show up in the contact’s card.

How to change contact pictures in android

When you’re done, just hit “Save”—the new image should sync across all your Android devices.

While Android’s openness is easily one of its biggest strengths, it’s also what makes simple things like changing a contact picture a more convoluted process than it should be since it doesn’t work the same way across devices. Fortunately, it isn’t that difficult regardless of manufacturer UI, especially once you’ve done it at least once.

Android phones these days come with enormous display screens. Back in the day when we had a smaller display screen, a thumbnail caller image looked pretty amazing but now if you see the same caller ID on your 4” beast, you might not be very impressed.

By default when you apply a picture as a contact photo, it takes up only one-third area of the screen leaving the two-third area or I should say wasting the screen real estate completely.

Today, I will show you how you can apply good resolution full screen pics as your call screen images or screen caller IDs, and actually use the full screen image to identify the caller.

How to change contact pictures in android

Ultimate Caller Screen is an amazing application available on Google Play Store for your Android phone, which provides the option to apply good-quality images as caller ID photos.

Furthermore, these images are displayed in full screen when someone calls you.

How It Works

Step 1: Download and install Ultimate Call Screen HD Free on your Android phone. The application works on all the devices which are running on Android 2.1 and above (sorry Apple users).

Step 2: When you launch the application, you will land on the settings menu. Before we proceed any further, please make sure you have downloaded the pictures you are going to use as your caller images to your SD card.

If you want a perfect result, crop the result in a ratio of 3:2 in landscape mode using any of the free image editors you are comfortable with. Once you have saved all the photos to your phone memory, it’s time to apply them to contacts.

How to change contact pictures in androidHow to change contact pictures in android

Step 3: In the app, click on Contact Manager to load the list of all the contacts you have in your phone. Now, search for the contact you want to apply an HD image to (if you have a large contact list, finding the contact may be cumbersome) and click on it.

How to change contact pictures in android

Step 4: The contact will open up where you can set the HD caller image. You can shoot an image from your camera, or you could use an image that’s already in your SD card.

After applying the image, click on the preview button to have a look of how of how the image will look like when the caller calls you. You can make some changes if you want. Once you are satisfied, press the back button to save the changes.

How to change contact pictures in androidHow to change contact pictures in android

Step 5: On the app home screen check the option Activate Ultimate Caller Screen to activate the HD caller screen.

Now, all your contacts will have a full screen caller image. To the ones you applied a custom image, the selected pic will be shown, for the rest, the default image will used. You can change the default image from the settings menu.

How to change contact pictures in android

The tools also provide options like flip to reject, silent or loudspeaker option.

Conclusion

I’m sure, with all these HD caller images, you will never have to actually read the name of the person calling you. So go on, and try out the app and tell us how it went.

Moreover, if you are bored with just images and ringtone when someone calls you, see how you can apply a video as a video tone for incoming calls in our next article. Stay tuned for that.

Q. How do I add an Android contact photo for someone who doesn’t already have one so I can see something besides initials in a circle?

A. Start by opening the Contacts app on your Android device and selecting the contact you’d like to dress up with a photo. Tap the pencil-shaped Edit icon in the lower-right corner; if you have multiple accounts on the device, you may be asked to pick one here.

On the Edit screen for the person’s card, you can edit the name, the address, the phone number and other information by selecting the corresponding text field. To add a photo, tap the camera icon in the center of the circle at the top of the card. In the box that appears, you get the option to take a new picture right there or to choose a photo from the albums on your Android device.

Once you select a photo, you can resize and crop the image to your liking. Once you have finished editing the card, tap the Save button in the upper-right corner.

If you are using your Google Account’s default sync settings, the edited contact card updates itself across all the devices connected to the same account, including the Google Contacts app for desktop web browsers. Likewise, if you have more photos of people on your computer, you can add those pictures to your contacts by following the same editing steps through the Google Contacts app in the web browser and then syncing them to the Android device.

The process is similar for those with Apple devices wishing to add pictures to iOS, macOS and iCloud Contacts. When you have edited the contacts, added a photo and saved the card, the updated version should be available on all the devices using the same iCloud account.

Share All sharing options for: How to move your data to a new Android phone or iPhone

How to change contact pictures in android

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge

As the smartphone market gets saturated, phone makers are ramping up their efforts to lure away each other’s customers. But when you come home from the store (or sign for that package), you’ll have to move your life from your old device to the new one. It’s not hard, if you pay attention. Here’s how.

We’ll be presenting four possible flows: Android to Android, Android to iPhone, iPhone to Android, and iPhone to iPhone. But because there’s really no such thing as pure Android, it’s possible that your Android smartphone maker — especially if it’s one of the bigger ones like Samsung, OnePlus, or Google — will have some proprietary means of moving your data.

Before we begin, the usual warnings apply. In all cases, be connected to (or know the SSID and password for) your local Wi-Fi. Make a fresh backup of your old phone’s data. Depending on which kind of migration you’re doing, know your Google or iCloud ID and password. Make sure that you’ve updated your old phone’s operating system as much as you can before you start (although if you’re moving from Android to an iPhone, stay away from Android Pie — see “iPhone 8.x to Android,” below). Finally, realize that the screens you see here may differ a little from what’s on your phone.

Android to Android

It shouldn’t be a surprise that anything having to do with Android is going to lean heavily on Google.

  1. When you turn on your new phone, the first few steps will be the normal Terms and Conditions kinds of screens. As you tap through, you’ll eventually be asked if you want to bring your data over to the new phone, and you’ll be asked to pick where the data should come from.
  2. Tap “A Backup from an Android Phone,” and you’ll be told to open the Google app on the other phone. Do so, and tap Next.
  3. You’ll be instructed to go to your old phone, launch the Google app (not the Chrome app; the Google app), and tell it to set up your device.
  4. Your old phone will show a Getting Started screen without much information. Tap Next to get started.
  5. The old phone and new phone both want to establish where you’re moving your account in case there’s more than one phone in Bluetooth range. Tap the correct device icon on each phone.
  6. Just to be sure, the phones will both show a screen with numbers and colored shapes to confirm that your data is going to the right place. Those screens are supposed to match. Tap Next on your old phone (notice there’s no place to tap on the new one).
  7. Enter your screen lock code on your old phone and approve the copy to your new phone. Presto — your account will appear on the new phone.
  8. Log in to your Google account on the new phone. It may take a few minutes to download everything, but eventually all your Gmail, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, and backups will appear. What will not appear are all your apps, so there’s one more step.
  9. Launch the Google Play Store. Tap the menu icon, then tap “My apps and games.” You’ll be shown a list of apps that were on your old phone. Pick the ones you want to migrate (you might not want to move brand-specific or carrier-specific apps from the old phone to the new), and download them. While you’re there, update the apps that came with the new phone, too.
