If there’s one makeup technique that separates pros from amateurs, it’s complexion work. Convincingly faking perfect skin with makeup requires a working knowledge of color theory, lighting, skin types, and cosmetic formulations—not to mention lots of experience.

I’ve never had great skin , but after years and years of dermatologist-guided trial and error, my acne is finally starting to chill out. Even though I still have some hyperpigmentation spots and the odd zit, I only wear foundation to big events. The most I’ll do on a daily basis is some spot concealing, which is the single best technique for hiding dark spots while maintaining an overall realistic appearance.

Lifehacker’s Essential Science-Based Guide to Skincare

I never had a skincare routine until last year. I washed my face in the shower, and only applied…

If you struggle with foundation—whether it’s color match woes, ingredient sensitivity, or mid-day cake-face syndrome—or just plain don’t like it, spot concealing can even out your skin tone without looking like a mask. Here’s how to do it.

Protect Your Skin

How to Cover Up Blemishes

Makeup can’t magically flatten raised bumps or smooth out flakes, so if you need to conceal zits, scabs, or other rough texture, preparation is everything. I’m a huge believer in Vaseline , which I apply to my still-wet face right after cleansing. This keeps my skin moisturized all day and protects it from potential acne triggers in sunscreen and/or makeup. Any active pimples or flaky areas get a generous extra glob, which I allow to sit for at least five minutes; I remove the excess with a Q-tip just before applying concealer.

For hygiene reasons, I don’t recommend attempting to cover open wounds with makeup, but if you have a juicy zit to deal with, here’s what to do. Just after removing the Vaseline with a Q-Tip, press some translucent powder on top of the zit with a powder puff or sponge and let it sit for a minute; repeat if needed. This should give you a canvas that’s moisturized enough to not look flaky, but dry enough to hold onto concealer.

Choose The Right Color

Most people wear concealer that’s way too light for them. It’s easy to see why: if you need to cover a dark spot, reaching for something super-light to counteract that darkness makes intuitive sense.

Unfortunately, that’s not how pigment works. White pigment turns dark spots gray rather than fully concealing them, so your concealer needs to be roughly as dark as whatever you’re trying to cover up. Most people need, at most, two concealer shades: an orange-based color for blue or purple shadows and a yellow-based one for redness.

Here are four concealers applied heavily just below my jawline (L-R: Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer in Sx09, Kevyn Aucoin SSE in Sx06, NYX Dark Circle Concealer in Fair, Tarte Shape Tape concealer in Light Sand):

The lighter shades closely match my skin tone, but they have way too much white to cover my post-acne spots, undereye circles, or even the redness on my cheeks—so the darker shades are actually perfect.

Let’s start where most concealers do: dark circles. On my right eye (your left), I used the NYX Dark Circle Concealer in Fair; on my left (your right), I used the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer in Sx09. (I applied and blended both with my finger.) The white pigments in the NYX concealer leave a grey cast, but my left eye looks great; the difference is especially noticeable in natural light.

Next, let’s talk about redness. Everyone knows that green cancels red, so green concealer is a seemingly logical choice for redness. However, skin redness isn’t pure red; it’s a combination of visibly engorged blood vessels (red) and assorted levels of melanins (mostly brown and black, with some red). Those brown and black pigments are what make the ubiquitous mint green concealer stick useless for most people: adding green and white to dark, reddish-purple brown just makes a lighter, grayer brown.

Yellow concealers work better on redness for the vast majority of people—but again, too much white is bad news. On my right cheek (your left), I applied Tarte Shape Tape concealer in Light Sand; on my left, Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer in Sx06. (I applied the Tarte with my finger and the Kevyn Aucoin with a tiny brush; I blended both with fingers.) The lighter concealer knocked back the redness, but left behind a definite grey cast.

How to Cover Up Blemishes

If you’ve been looking for ways to cover up body blemishes to rock your low-cut party dress or to show off your sexy gams, you’re going to want to read this! Body blemishes can prevent us from wanting to wear certain types of clothing since we’re worried about having to cover it all up. Fortunately, I’ve found top-notch ways to cover up body blemishes so we can proudly wear the clothes we love!

1 Color Correct

One of the easiest ways to cover up body blemishes is to use a color corrector. Colored concealers can cancel out colors opposite of them on the color wheel, so if you have purplish blemishes, your best bet is to use a yellow corrector and so on. Lightly pat in the color corrector on the area of the blemish without smearing it and set it with a light dusting of powder.

2 Body Foundation

If you have a body blemish like stretch marks, a better way to cover it up might be to use a body foundation. Make Up For Ever, MAC, Kryolan and Dermablend all make foundations that are either made for both the face and body or just for the body, which can decrease the appearance of varicose veins as well as other types of blemishes. Use this method to soften the look of body blemishes and get ready faster!

3 Spray Tan

Body blemishes won’t stand a chance against the almighty spray tan! For an efficient way to cover up larger areas, opt for an all-over spray tan to blur and diminish the appearance of body blemishes. Spray tans aren’t just for summer, when done right they can look good any time of the year and give you an added glow! Go to a salon for the professional treatment or get similar results with drugstore spray tans, just ask a friend for help for hard to reach spots!

4 Shimmer

Another simple way to cover up body blemishes that aren’t as obvious but still bothersome is to add some shimmer to your body lotion. Add some of your powder shimmer or liquid highlighter to your lotion to give your body some shine. It will take the attention away from your blemish and put it back on you!

5 Microdermabrasion

One of the more permanent ways to cover up body blemishes is microdermabrasion. Typically we hear about microdermabrasion on the face but it can also be done on most parts of the body. There, it helps to lessen the appearance of light scarring, dark spots, sun damage and stretch marks.

6 Laser Resurfacing

Another permanent way to cover up body blemishes is to get laser resurfacing done on your blemishes. This is another procedure that is typically done on the face but can also be used on some areas of the body. Laser resurfacing uses beams of light to remove the outermost layer of your skin. This process can improve the look of sun damaged skin, acne scars, chicken pox scars, warts, liver spots and birthmarks.

7 Airbrush Makeup

Using airbrush makeup is one of the easier ways to cover up body blemishes of all types. Getting an airbrush makeup system can be an investment but it’s worth it if you enjoy the look and feel of airbrush makeup and use it regularly for your face and body. Cover up scars, age spots, acne and more with airbrush makeup. Using airbrush makeup for your body is an easy way to get a flawless finish with a lightweight feel!

The ways to cover up body blemishes don’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. There are lots of simple ways to cover up bodily blemishes so you can look and feel your best at your special event. Experiment with makeup and see which method works best for you. If you’re unhappy with the results, talk to your doctor about more permanent options. Do you have any tips for covering up body blemishes?

Oh, hi there, fellow pizza face. This might be the least glamorous beauty story you read today, but probably the most useful for all time. Having acne-prone skin has worked to my benefit in two strange ways. One: My prescription retinol doubles for 86ing fine lines and wrinkles, keeping me Dorian Gray young! Two: My zits forced me to become skilled at doing my makeup. Still, even with my many (many, many) years of pimple-masking experience, I’ve only now learned some new techniques from makeup artists on how to cover every type of breakout.

When it’s a whitehead.

Start with a clean, dry face (duh). “It’s really important that your concealer has a dry, thickish consistency — almost like a putty,” says makeup artist Mally Roncal, founder of Mally Beauty. “The wetter and more slippery a concealer it is, the harder it is for it to adhere to that mound/bubble. This kind of concealer is usually going to be found in a pot or tube, not in a wand — that type is too thin.” Once you’ve found your spackle, use a small brush, like a precision eyeliner brush, to cover both the whitehead and the red, inflamed area surrounding it. “Be as targeted as possible. You could even use a magnifying mirror,” says Roncal. “You don’t want to cover any of the good skin around the pimple or you’ll create a ‘look at my zit’ bulls-eye.” After application, give the zit a gentle pat with a finger so it doesn’t look tall. Translucent powder can make a whitehead look shiny and white; instead set your concealer with a fluffy brush dipped in a powder foundation that matches your skin tone.

“If the zit refuses to be covered by concealer and is in a favorable place — a chin or where Cindy Crawford’s mole is — I have been known to take a black eyeliner and make it a mole,” says Roncal. “When I first met my husband, I had a ‘mole,’ and a month later he asked me, ‘What happened to your beauty mark?’”

When it’s a cystic breakout.

To best hide these swollen, headless monsters, you need to start with a compress — icy or warm — depending on what feels best on your skin. An ice cube feels good, soothing the soreness, and a face cloth doused with warm (but not hot) water will kill bacteria; both can reduce the inflammation and size of a lesion, thank Zeus. “The problem with cystic zits is they all have different personalities,” says Roncal. “I have iced some, warmed up others — you almost don’t know until you meet the zit what it’s going to take to get that sucker to go down.”

This may sound counterintuitive, but stay away from full-coverage foundation and use a combo of tinted moisturizer and lightweight concealer instead. “You don’t have to completely cover it up because you’re never going to completely hide it,” says Autumn Moultrie, a makeup artist who has worked with Gabrielle Union and Kerry Washington. “Heavy coverage will make it look worse — bigger. You just want to lessen the obviousness by matching your skin tone as best you can.” When in doubt: “Do a smoky eye and no one will be looking at your zit,” says Roncal.

When it’s a flaky dried out mess.

Sigh. Thanks to the overzealous use of acne meds, your blemish now looks like it has dandruff — double gross. The first step should be to hydrate your skin right away, with a small amount of moisturizer, says Joshua Zeichner, New York City-based dermatologist. But according to Roncal, you can also remove flakes as gently as possible before putting on makeup. “I am a fan of soaking flaky blemishes with a warm, wet washcloth and then using a tweezer (sterilized with alcohol), working it around the zit, gently pulling and trimming.” Don’t reach for the concealer just yet: “In order to make your skin look as fresh as possible, you want to keep the area hydrated with an oil-free moisturizer,” says Moultrie. “You also can use a hydrating mist that has essential oils to make your skin look dewy.” Both products will prep your skin before your regular concealing routine.

When it’s a blackhead (or several).

“I cover blackheads on the side of my nose every day,” says Roncal. “I like thin layers of different textures. First I’ll do a liquid foundation or cream foundation, then if I need extra coverage I’ll dab on a similarly colored concealer, patting it so that it blends, then top it off with a dusting of powder foundation. If they are still peeking through, I’ll hit them with more concealer using a precision eyeliner brush.” Hmm, Mally, that sounds like a lot. “Hey, the key to covering any zit is patience,” says Roncal. “If you think you can cover it in one fell swoop, you’re wrong.”

Make those marks disappear!

How to Cover Up Blemishes

Anyone who’s suffered from acne as a teen or adult knows how stressful it can be to always feel like everyone is staring at your skin. If you want to make your pimples and acne scars seemingly disappear for the day, this video by YouTube vlogger Jess Bunty is the most relatable and easy-to-follow tutorial we’ve found.

Let’s break down her tips.

1. Start fresh.

Make sure your skin is clean and moisturized to give your makeup the proper starting surface. Even oily skin needs moisture! Try one made for your skin type, like Ole Henriksen Counter Balance Mattifying Moisture Crème ($40, sephora.com).

2. Apply primer.

Using your fingertips, apply a primer to ensure the rest of your makeup goes on smooth and stays on all day. Jess uses Rimmel London Fix & Perfect Pro Primer ($7, amazon.com). She recommends waiting a few minutes before applying foundation.

3. Apply concealer to spots in a criss cross motion.

Jess applies a generous amount of concealer for ample coverage. If you’re using a concealer in a pot — NYC Concealer Jar ($5, ulta.com) is a great affordable choice — scoop it out with a new cotton swab each time to avoid cross-contamination from fingers and broken-out skin. Be sure you cover each side of the blemish by applying concealer in an “X” pattern.

4. Blend the concealer by gently patting it.

Using the pads of your (clean!) fingers, carefully press your concealer, blending it onto each blemish. Don’t rub it, or you could risk streaky results.

5. Cover up under-eye circles.

While waiting for your makeup to “cook” (i.e. set into your skin), apply a different concealer, like Benefit Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer ($20, sephora.com) to any under-eye discoloration or darkness you may have. Want to make it perfect? Use our handy concealer trick to eliminate dark circles.

6. Blot your base with a tissue.

Absorb any excess makeup by lightly pressing a tissue into your skin, allowing you to get as natural finish as possible.

7. Use a stippling brush to apply liquid foundation.

While the other steps can be done using fingertips, Jess says her stipple brush provides “good coverage and an airbrushed, even finish” when it comes to applying foundation. Apply the liquid makeup — she uses Revlon ColorStay Makeup ($9, amazon.com) — in round, stippling motions so you can get coverage without wiping off the concealer you already applied. Try a brush like like Sephora Collection Pro Stippling Brush #44 ($35, sephora.com), starting off with a little product, then building to avoid going overboard.

8. Set your makeup.

After waiting a few more minutes for your makeup to set itself, apply either a pressed powder or finely-milled loose powder to ensure it stays put for the rest of the day. Jess recommends e.l.f. High Definition Powder ($6, ulta.com). Using a large fluffy brush, apply your powder in a stippling motion.

9. Use a finishing spray to seal your look.

A setting mist like Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50 ($28, sephora.com) will not only help your makeup last, but also break up any cakey-ness caused by the heaviness of the makeup.

Then, apply the rest of your makeup — Jess recommends a bold lip or eye to distract from any bumps that may still be visible — and you’re ready to go!

Most of the people by mistake imagine that pimples are only an adolescent problem. Even, the adult can also get acne, as well, although if they’ve never handled blemishes and pimples throughout their teenage years. So, the adult acne or pimple is repeated naturally and occurs itself always as papules, pustules and cysts all over the mouth, chin, and jaw line and on the cheeks. Next, a regrettable fact of adult acne is that it can leave its blemish. The truth is as we age, the process tends to hold back and once a breakout disappears, it can result in a mark. At the same time as adolescent acne is always caused by too much oil and blocked pores, adult acne is usually caused by these four important factors: You can easily get skincare products online using Flipkart coupons with great deals.

Hormonal Imbalances

Teenage years, pregnancy and periods are all the most common examples where these outbreaks can come about. Hormonal imbalances may cause the sebaceous glands to be on the blink and result in outbreaks.

Hereditary issues, develop of dead skin cells on the shell of the skin and wrong cleansing might cause an obstruction of oil which promotes to a breakout.

Bacteria Occurrence

Bacteria is a very common cause for outbreaks even in adolescence and adults that is why cleansing in the morning is the most important part to eliminate bacteria.

Blemishes might occur in different sizes. Applying colour correction is an effective solution to cover up blemishes or marks immediately. How to Cover Up Blemishes

Regardless of whether you’re having a great hair day or crushing it at work, one bad breakout can completely change everything. Not only are pimples incredibly inconvenient and totally unapologetic about it—as evidenced by the multitude of zits camping out on my right cheek—they can also be really hard to cover if you don’t understand the best practices to do so.

Although pimples come in all shapes in sizes, there are certain makeup techniques that can help to minimize their appearance on your face if that’s what you’re looking for. The right full-coverage foundation or finesse of a Beautyblender could be the difference between doing a little too much and a smoother, more natural-looking complexion. As someone who’s gone through lots of trial and error with zits and dark spots, I know that covering them up requires some skills—which is why I reached out for some expert tips.

To find out how to make breakouts vanish (at least for a few hours), I spoke with Kelli J. Bartlett, artistic director at Glamsquad; celebrity makeup artist Allan Avendaño; and Dominique Lerma, Moda Brush executive artist, to get the lowdown on common mistakes we make when it comes to hiding pesky pimples.

Piling on a ton of makeup over your zits will not only make them more obvious, but also slow down their healing process. It’s not enough to just cover them up and hope they’ll disappear—treating the skin under the makeup will actually help pimples go away sooner. “One common mistake that women make when concealing breakouts is not taking the time to heal the breakout before moving forward with concealing it,” Lerma explains. “I never recommend putting makeup on an open breakout/freshly popped pimple. It’s as unsanitary as it sounds and the breakout will not heal properly when makeup is packed on top.” Editor tip: Since breakouts can become even worse if they’re improperly treated—resulting in dark spots or even scabbing—it’s best to use a spot treatment like Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, $17, to help them dry out and heal before you conceal.

Not washing your brushes and sponges can cause them to collect bacteria, which tends to make acne worse. “Before even getting to makeup, you have to make sure that everything is clean, so no dirty brushes or sponges,” Avendaño tells SELF. Makeup guru Bobbi Brown has said that brushes that are used around the eyes should be cleaned at least twice a month while all others can be washed once a month.

Even if you’re not suffering from a breakout, moisturizing should always be a first step before applying makeup, as it helps to provide a smooth base for foundation and concealer. It’ll also help avoid looking like you piled too much product on. “Skin-care is of utmost importance always but especially when dealing with a breakout,” Lerma says. “I recommend following your skin-care regimen, but applying a little extra moisturizer on the breakout area, and then priming the entire face.”

Avendaño agrees, explaining that applying a moisturizer before foundation makes a huge difference for acne-prone skin. “Whenever I’m working on someone with acne, I make sure to apply moisturizer first so any dry areas are fully hydrated, ensuring concealer and foundation don’t cling to dry spots around their breakouts,” he says. “I love using the Differin Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 before applying foundation because it’s a moisturizer with SPF, and due to its matte finish, also acts as a primer.”

Color correcting might seem intimidating, but once you understand how colors work for different issues, they can be your go-to secret weapon for disguising zits—especially if they’re more on the red side. Color correctors are “so helpful for really red pimples or dark acne scars,” Bartlett explains. “I typically use a green shade for red, inflamed blemishes, but yellow works, too. Peach shades tend to cover dark spots very well.”

So if you ’ve been following the no-makeup trend for months which pairs a flawless base with a radiant glow in a way that makes it seem like you just woke up with the perfect skin.

For many, problematic skin can give rise to imperfections which can be a barrier to creating a flawless and smooth makeup look. If you want your blemishes and acne scars to disappear for the day below are amazing makeup tricks for you .

Clean your face.

Before you apply as much as a drop of makeup , make sure you prep your skin by cleaning it thoroughly removing all the dirt that might have settled throughout the day on your face .

Prime time

Prep your complexion with a primer that will smooth over any problem areas and brighten the whole face. Although sunscreen is a must for all, ladies with dry skin should use a moisturizer long with the primer .

Moist lips

Use a lip balm to moisten your lips right about now so that eventually when you apply your lipstick or lip gloss, you have the softest and most supple lips .

Use concealer like a pro

Apply a generous amount of concealer for ample coverage. Make sure you cover each side of the blemish by applying the concealer on the spot in an “X” pattern. Now dab the concealer with the pads of your clean fingers.

Use as less chemicals as possible in your makeup products so as to not aggravate the blemishes or acne on your skin . Try this super good organic and natural cream concealer which can also be used to give a foundation-like coverage just by mixing your favorite moisturizer or primer .

You can also use an under-eye corrector. Make sure you dab it because we are covering up the blemishes . In order to reduce the glossiness and shine on your face , just puff some white face powder with a fan brush. This will make the look a little more matte and natural.

Foundation for the forehead

Now to cover the forehead , apply few dots of the foundation and use a brush in circular motion to spread it. Again, do not blend too much as we are trying to cover up spots, blemishes and acne scars if any.

Even out the skin tone

Use a single or combination of loose powder and blend it all over your face and neck to make the skin tone look even and free of any spots or imperfections .

Final settled and natural look

Go for a setting spray all over your face once the makeup is done and then just use a face puff to pat it down. This will make the whole look settled, natural and beautiful.

Give your cheeks a little sweetness.

Do not shy away from adding a slight pop of color on your face . Use this balm-like blush for a natural glow. Apply sparingly over cheeks with fingers or a blush brush and blend well into the skin for a perfect natural tint.

Draw attention to your eyes and lips.

Don’t let your spots rule. Just be clever with where you draw attention to. Strong makeup looks such as smoky eyes or a statement lip are a great way of detracting from problematic skin. To take it up a notch and erase any tiredness, curl your eye lashes and use a mascara to let all the makeup come together. And how can we forget a nice nude lipstick.

Turn your blemish into a beauty mark.

If your pimple isn’t too big, you can totally turn it into a super-stylish beauty mark, which can give your face extra character . All you have to do is grab brown eyeliner and cover up the blemish effectively and realistically. If you plan on doing this, just make sure you use a makeup setting spray to keep your “beauty mark” from rubbing off throughout the day .

How to Cover Up Blemishes

Spots. Zits. Pimples. Acne. Everyone gets them at some point or another. No one, however, needs a permanent photographic reminder of the time they had a large spot on their nose.

There is a lot of backlash at the moment against over-edited images, but sometimes, you just need a little touch up here or there to reflect what you usually look like. With Photoshop, and other image editing apps like GIMP, it’s simple to do. I’m going to work in Photoshop but you should be able to follow along with any image editor–just use the equivalent tools and shortcuts.

The Simple Way: Spot Healing Brush

Open the image you want to edit in Photoshop. It’s a bad idea to modify any of the original image’s pixels, so I’m going to show you how to work non-destructively.

Start by pressing Control+J on your keyboard (or Command+J on a Mac) to select the background and duplicate it to a new layer.

Then, select the Spot Healing Brush tool from the sidebar, or by pressing J on your keyboard. If one of the other healing tools is selected, click and hold on the sidebar icon or cycle through the options with Shift+J until you get the Spot Healing Brush.

How to Cover Up Blemishes

Resize the brush so that it’s a little larger than the offending blemish. The easiest way to do this is with the [ and ] keys.

Click on the pimple once, and Photoshop will go to work. It samples pixels from the surrounding area and uses them to replace the pixels to be healed.

How to Cover Up Blemishes

Repeat the process for any other blemishes you want to get rid of.

The Spot Healing Brush tool can also be used to remove small creases or wrinkles. Resize the brush so it’s a little wider than the crease you want to remove and then carefully paint along it.

The Advanced Way: Healing Brush

The Spot Healing Brush is great for small blemishes that are surrounded by plenty of good pixels. When there are spots close to areas of detail, such the subject’s lips or facial hair, Photoshop’s automatic sampling won’t work as well. You can see in the image below that when I try to heal the spot near the model’s lips Photoshop got confused. It tried to use some of the color from the model’s lips to cover the spot.

How to Cover Up Blemishes

To overcome this, you need to use a slightly more advanced tool. The Healing Brush is similar to the Spot Healing Brush, but rather than letting Photoshop pick the sample area, you have to choose what to sample.

If you have the Spot Healing Brush selected, you can change to the regular Healing Brush with the keyboard shortcut Shift+J. Alternatively, click and hold on the sidebar icon for the healing tools and select the Healing Brush from the list.

How to Cover Up Blemishes

For removing spots, make sure that the Healing Brush is set to Aligned, and Sample: Current & Below. Diffusion controls how quickly Photoshop blends the sampled pixels. In most case, a middle value of around 4 or 5 is perfect.

Hold down Alt (or Option on a Mac) and click on an area to select a sample. You want to pick an area that’s as similar as possible to the one to be retouched. For example, if a spot sits directly on the subject’s lip line, sample from a similar point further down their lip.

How to Cover Up Blemishes

Resize the brush so that it is slightly larger than the spot you want to heal. Click on the blemish, and Photoshop will do its magic.

Repeat the process until you’re happy with how the image looks. Remember to select a new sample for every spot.

Removing acne is easy. It’s not a permanent facial feature so if the image you’re editing is going to be seen by people, it’s worth spending the 30 seconds in Photoshop to deal with it. There’s no need for your Facebook, LinkedIn, or even Tinder, profile picture to not reflect the best you.
