Tutu’s are a very common costume for ballet dancers. Making one can be done easily and without sewing. Plus, if you choose to make one instead of buying one, it is easier to control the colors that you put into in. You simply need to buy tulle and elastic to make your ballet tutu.

Easy sew Ballerina/Tutu skirts

When you think of a Ballerina skirt what immediately comes to your mind is a child whirling around in a tutu skirt. A kid is extremely delighted every time she wears a ballerina skirt. The romanticism and playfulness of the skirts wins them over every time.

But not so the modern fashionista. In spite of the beauty of this most feminine skirt, the big girls are wary of being labelled a ballerina if they wear it.But even the big girls are increasingly preferring the feminine looks of the ballerina skirts.

Sewing a Ballerina skirt is easy and can be done with the minimum sewing knowledge. Some of the tutorials I have featured are no sew ie you do not even need a sewing machine for the whole construction. These easy sew ( no sew) tutorials for making a homemade tutu skirt will tempt even the most sewing averse person attracted to dressmaking.

Some of the tutorials mentioned are for kids tutus but the principles can be applied to adult skirts as well.

TIPS

How to gather fabric for your Ballerina skirt

  • How to gather fabric for your Ballerina skirt
  • How to care for your tulle ballerina skirt

Handling tulle fabric when making the tutu skirt can be a little hard due to the nature of the cloth and the sheer volume of the fabric you use to make this voluminous skirt. So the usual way of gathering the waist part with two rows of long stitches may not work.

You need a long plastic thread (like the one used in a fishing line) or dental floss. You can even use the full strand of embroidery thread. Cut them a bit longer than the cloth you have.

Adjust the stitch type to zig zag and stitch width very wide.
Place the thread/floss over the cloth and zig zag over this, without catching the thread in your stitch
After you finish the stitch, gently pull the thread or floss to make the frills of the tulle.Use a few hand stitches with needle and thread to stitch the gathers at both sides.

How to care for your tulle ballerina skirt

If you find wrinkles on your skirt, do not take out the iron yet, use steam from a hot shower or a cloth steamer to remove the wrinkles.

Always hang the skirt rather than folding it to store. otherwise unsightly wrinkles will be the result.

Never ever put the tulle skirt in a washing machine. That is a sure way of destroying it.

Hand wash the skirt with mild shampoo and water. ( Checkout this post on more tips on handwashing clothes)

Take a look at the beautiful and fashionable girls who have styled this skirt into something very modern and desirable. They have paired the skirt with shirt, lace tops, sweater, crop tops, tights, jackets and spruced it up to make it look like something you should have in your fashion wardrobe.

Some general rules for wearing a ballet skirt in style are

If you have a slim and long torso you can go with a tutu with a big waistband
If you have short legs definitely go for slim waistbands; otherwise you will end up looking stocky.
If you have very broad hips you should avoid wearing a very short tutu

A tank top paired with a wide embellished belt and ballerina shoes will work very well with a ballerina skirt. A leather/ denim jacket paired with the Ballerina skirt will give it a contrast of rough and feminine which is a very attractive look. But you have to be careful that the jacket is not too bulky or else along with your voluminous skirt the whole look will end up looking dumpy.

Things You’ll Need

  • Tulle tutu
  • Tagging gun

Whether it is for a ballet recital, a Halloween costume or simply to wear as a fashion statement, a pancake tutu makes a bold statement with any ensemble. This style of tutu is characterized by its stiff, flat, round shape. It resembles a pancake, hence the name “pancake tutu.” This is in contrast with the longer, romantic style tutus that drape downward. Many tutus will already come pancaked, however, you may have a tutu that requires you to do the pancaking yourself. Investing in a “tutu gun” will make the process of pancaking simpler and quicker.

Lay your tutu out upside-down, on a hard, flat surface. Fan all of the layers out flat.

Push your tagging gun into two to three layers of the tulle, starting with the layer closest to the waistband. Your tagging gun will deposit a small plastic tag that connects the layers of tulle and forces them to stick out straight.

Continue working your way around the tutu, attaching a plastic tag through each additional layer of tulle.

Turn your pancaked tutu back right side up.

Do you have a little girl that loves to dress up? I sure do, and we have a huge box of dress up clothes, most of them made by me! It’s so much cheaper (and more fun!) to make your own stuff! My little girl loves it because she can pick out exactly what she wants as far as colors and fabrics go! This No-Sew Tutu took me about an hour to make, and there is no sewing, so anyone can do it! This is also a great Halloween project!

Here is what you will need to make a No-Sew Tutu:

  • 1 yard of tulle in whatever colors you wish!
  • scissors
  • a stretchy headband! (make sure it fits comfortably, but snuggly around your childs waist)

Here is how to make a No-Sew Tutu:

Step 1: Roll your yard of tulle up longways and cut into 1 inch sections. Do this for each color.

Step 2: Separate all of your tulle into strips.

Step 3: This step you will do over and over all the way around the headband. You will start with 1 strip of tulle and match the ends together, place the open end of the loop under the headband, and pull the other side through the loop. Make sure you pull tightly so it will not unravel.

Step 4: Using the method above, go around the whole headband with your tulle. I used 3 different colors, and I used 2 strands of tulle for each color. If you are using only 1 color, you don’t have to worry about this step. If you are using 2 or more colors I recommend using at least 2 strands of each color or more, depending on how many blocks of colors you want.

Step 5: Once you are done looping all of your tulle pieces, hang your tutu up, and use your fingers to “comb” the tutu and make sure their are no knots. You can then see if any areas are longer than others, and trim accordingly.

Thats it! 5 simple steps to make a super cute No-Sew Tutu that your little one is sure to love! This No-Sew Tutu took me about an hour to make, but it was relaxing and fun, I just caught up on some Tv while making it, haha. Ever since I finished it, my little girl has been dancing around in it, and I bet it’s going to take some bribery to get her to take it off at bed time!

Here is the finished Tutu on my model (aka:my awesome daughter):

She thinks her little faces she makes are just adorable (and I guess they kind of are…lol) I hope you enjoyed learning How to make a No-Sew Tutu! I know I loved making it!

I am very grateful to my dear friend Danielle Legge who has given generous permission for me to use her patterns to teach others how to make classical ballet tutus. Dani has been my tutu mentor for many years and I would now like to share the benefits of what I have learned to others, just as Dani did with me.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Dani’s pattern is extremely versatile and designed for stretch fabrics such as lycra and stretch velvet. The great benefit of stretch tutus is that the tutu will grow with a dancer over a couple of seasons. In addition, stretch tutus have terrific resale value as they will fit a number of different body types and still look like the tutu was tailor-made.

I will be running classes from my studio in Sydney. They will be one-on-one over 2 days. The scheduling of the classes is flexible and I will endeavour to fit classes to suit students’ own busy lives. You may buy your own materials or I’m happy to make up a kit for you. It is important to purchase materials that are fit for purpose so you should consult with me first. You will, however, be required to purchase a pattern from Dani. She can be contacted via her FB page Tutus By Dani.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

To undertake the course you must have intermediate sewing skills. Stretch sewing skills are handy but not essential as the basics will be taught. It is important though that your sewing machine has a good straight stretch stitch. Unfortunately, this is not a course for beginners.

You will be supervised through fabric cutting, garment construction, shown quick and easy ways to cut and shape your net, learn stress-free ways to gather 45 linear metres of ballet net, and importantly, how to tack your tutu into a classical shape from the puffball that emerges from your machine. After 2 days of focused work and personal instruction you’ll have a lined, 6-8 layer classical ballet tutu, tacked and ready for decoration.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

My girls have been in ballet since they were about 2. I have made several no-sew tutus over the years for them. However this year when my daughter wanted to be a ballerina for halloween I thought it was time to make a “real” tutu. The no-sew tutus are fine and all but they often get all tangled up and they don’t lay right. I also didn’t want to make a full labor intensive classical tutu. So I did a happy medium and made a tutu that fakes the classical tutu perfectly for halloween or can be used for performances if needed.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

The tutu, if fluffy, spins well, and has a cute ballerina shape. IF you added a wire it could even be a true pancake tutu, but we didn’t want that.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

  • Fabric for the circle skirt base, and top layer (I used 1 yard of a silk rayon of some sort for the 10″ skirt)
  • Tulle I used 5 yards of the cheap crunchy tulle for a 10″ long skirt
  • Elastic for the waist
  • Trim (optional I used iron on gold trim to add detail to the top layer of the skirt

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

You will need to cut a circle skirt for the base, and a shorter skirt for the top layer. My skirt was 10″ long and the top layer was 4″ long. If you need help making a circle skirt I always use this app. It makes it so easy! Since I made this an elastic waist skirt I made the waistline measurement 3″ larger than my daughters waistline. I also used 5 yards of tulle, cut into strips. I folded the tulle in half so each strip was cut as a double layer, this gives a little extra body to each layer. I spaced each strip 2″ apart on the skirt so I needed a 2″, 4″, 6″, 8″ and 10″ strips. You will also want to cut a waistband, the width of the waistline measurement you used and about 3″ tall so it can encase the elastic.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Starting with the bottom layer, pleat the 2″ strip 2″ from the outer edge of the skirt. For the first layer the pleats will be a little more spaced out. Then each layer you do after this the pleats will get closer together. Each layer after the first layer will get placed further up the skirt, so the 4″ layer will be placed 4″ from the edge, and so on. When it gets to the top layer I gathered it instead of pleated because it will be a lot of tulle to gather. Then add the top circle skirt layer sewn to the waistline as well. I added gold trim to the edge of the top circle skirt. Then I added the waistband. You can see how to sew a knit waistband here.

Then instead of sewing a leotard to the tutu I paired the tutu with a leotard from amazon.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make a tutu for your little one that is soft on her skin and simple to sew, this is the tutorial for you. Tulle is inexpensive, hence making this a cheap sewing project, but the satisfaction of being able to sew a tutu skirt for your little one is invaluable!
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

I’ve made a tutu or twenty in the last few years. They’re great for dress-up and also serve as a nice pettiskirt under big, fluffy dresses. I needed to make a new one in a bigger size to go under Olivia’s costume for the Nutcracker, so I took a few extra minutes to snap some pictures of the process.

Tutus are inexpensive to make , but take a little time since you’ll be gathering quite a lot of tulle to get the desired puff effect. I finish the gathered skirt with a soft lining and knit waistband so that the tulle isn’t scratchy against the kids’ skin. Have someone in mind that would like one? You can use this same set of instructions to make a baby tutu and even a tutu for an adult. I’ll show you how to make a tutu for anyone right now!

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Supplies:
5 yards lightweight tulle
1/2 yard lining fabric
1/4 yard thick knit
1 yard 3/4″ elastic
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Begin by cutting your tulle into at least 10 sections. For this longer tutu, I cut each section 18″ long, giving me exactly 10 lengths from the 5 yards of tulle. The length to cut the tulle will depend on how long you want the skirt – measure from your child’s waist to the desired finished length of the skirt and cut all lengths of tulle according to this measurement. Fold the tulle on your cutting mat, matching selvage edges and then folding one more time – this makes it easier to cut with a rotary blade. Use a rotary cutter for the smoothest edge on the tulle.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Next, gather each section of tulle along the long side. Feed each piece of tulle into your sewing machine right after the previous so they’re all connected. I like to use a ruffling/gathering foot (affiliate link) to gather the tulle quickly – if you don’t have one, you can set your machine to a long, loose stitch length and then pull the bobbin threads when you’re done to gather the tulle by hand.

Regardless of the method, gather all of the tulle as tightly as possible. Next, we’re going to fold the gathered length of tulle back and forth on itself to make one skirt piece. Measure your child’s waist and add 7″ to find the skirt width. Fold the skirt back and forth on itself to make one skirt piece equal to this determined skirt width and stitch the layers together across the top.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Cut one piece of lining from selvage edge to selvage edge and about 3/4″ shorter than the tulle layers. If you’re going to hem the lining (e.g., if the fabric frays), cut the lining piece the same length as the tulle layers and hem with a narrow hem so that it’s just slightly shorter than the tulle. Join the short ends of the lining and stitch together to form a tube. Sew a gathering stitch around the top of the lining and gather it until it measures your child’s waist measurement + 7″.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Stack the lining under the tulle and stitch the two together around the top.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

For the waistband, cut two pieces of knit 5″ wide by 1/2 the waist measurement + 4″. Sew the short sides together on one side with a 1/4″ seam allowance. On the other side, sew 3.5″ down one side, leave a 1″ opening, and sew another .5″ to the edge. This is the opening we’ll put the elastic through later.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Now, fold the waistband wrong sides together and press a crease into the top.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Open the waistband up, match the raw edge and right side of the the waistband to the raw edge of the right side of the tulle/lining skirt and pin. Be sure that the side of the waistband with the opening is further away from the waistband (so that it will end up on the inside of the skirt when finished). Stitch the waistband to the skirt using a straight stitch and 3/8″ seam allowance.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Turn the waistband up and to the inside along the top pressed fold. The raw edge of the inside waistband should fall over the stitch lines on the inside of the skirt. Pin if needed. From the TOP of the skirt, use a zigzag stitch to finish the waistband, being sure to catch the raw edge on the inside of the waistband. Remove the gathering stitches from the tulle if you wish.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Measure a length of elastic equal to or 1″ shorter than your child’s waist measurement. Use a safety pin to feed the elastic through the opening on the inner waistband.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Join the two ends of elastic together and stitch with a zig zag stitch back and forth over the elastic several times. Pull the waistband to slip the elastic back into the opening and you’re done!

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Tutus became fashion sweethearts not only among ballerinas. Who would have thought that this funny and at the same time glamorous piece would be really worn outside the ballet clubs.

Let’s see how to make no sew tutu!

The first step is to measure your waist or hip, depending on the spot you want to wear your tutu. Then take an elastic band or a large ribbon and place it together with the 40 inch long tulle on a large table. If you want a less puffy tutu make these stripes wider and longer.

So far so good, now cut the tulle stripes. Be careful make it longer since when you’ll attach it to the base it will become much smaller. Now, take the stripes and fold them into half, this way you’ll create a super-puffiness. Leave an extra ½ inch if you want to sew these to the base. However for a no sew tutu you should leave more.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Grab the folded strip and make a little loop and pass the tulle under the elastic, pulling the ends through it. Now the tulle piece is attached to the base, you can make your tutu fluffier if you tie it tightly.

Depending on the length you want, you can cut longer pieces of tulle. Repeat this process until you attached all the stripes to the ribbon or elastic band.

For extra load of fun, decorate your tutu with glitter. Make some glue dots on the tulle and attach small ribbons, feathers, lace or other crazy accessories to it. Use your creativity to become a little princess or a punk diva.

One of these bands from Michaels

Tulle in color(s) of your choice

We really like the specific band from Michaels linked above because it has great elasticity, is the right width, and already has holes for attaching the tulle, but you may be able to find something similar at another store. Or, if you’d like your band to be a specific color, you can find the band material at Hobby Lobby on the spool in several colors. You could buy it off the spool and sew together your own band.

We put this skirt we made on a 7 month old and a 22 month old and it fit them both really well. We think you could use this band on an infant all the way up to a 2 year old, probably even a little older depending on her size. You may want to adjust the length of your strips of tulle depending on how big the child is. We cut our tulle into 12″ strips. If you’re making it for an infant, you may want to cut your tulle a bit shorter.

First, cut your tulle into 12″ long strips (or adjust length longer or shorter depending on the size of the child). The tulle is 6″ wide on the roll and you’re going to leave the width the same, so you will end up with 6″ x 12″ sections of tulle. We needed approximately 50 strips for this skirt. Tie a section of tulle in each hole of the bottom row on the band. The best way to tie the tulle to the band is to do the following:

  1. Fold the tulle in half lengthwise
  2. Push the folded end of the tulle through a hole in the band
  3. Loop the loose ends of the tulle through the folded section of the tulle, then pull it tight

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

Go all the way around the band until each hole on the bottom row has a section of tulle tied to it. And that’s it. Really easy, right? If you want a really full skirt you can always add additional rows of tulle.

As a kid I was such a tomboy.

I’m pretty sure my mom cringed with embarrassment when I walked into school in an oversized shirt and jeans. I just didn’t do the girly thing back then.

Even now I’m much more comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt, but if there’s a reason for it I will put on a dress (and like it).

For Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party at Disney World this year the family and I went as characters from Toy Story 3. I was Bonnie (the little girl who got all the toys at the end), Chris was Woody, and the toddler was Buzz Lightyear.

I had decided early on that I wanted to make both mine and Chris’s costumes. It saves money but I could also customize them however I wanted. Chris’s Woody costume was a huge hit and he got compliments all night long. But…no one knew who I was. At one point I got asked if I was Rex (the dinosaur) because I was carrying him around. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s okay though! I probably should’ve gone as Bo Peep or Jessie if I wanted people to recognize me but I wanted to do my own thing. And it was more fun that way!

Though let’s be honest, now that Toy Story 4 is out people would probably know who I was. I just did it a year too early. Oh well.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

I could have added more tulle (and I should have) to my skirt but I honestly finished this right before we left for Disney and I had other things that needed to get done. So…I worked with what I had. But I could have added another spool of tulle on it and it would’ve been perfectly fluffy and full!

Depending on how big the person is you’re making this for you may need more or less than 3 spools. I think 4 would’ve been perfect for me, but it really is personal preference depending on how full you want your skirt to be.

I will say this though. It is a pain in the butt to use the restroom when you’re wearing a tulle skirt and overalls. If I had been smart I would’ve weaved a ribbon in-between each piece of tulle to hold them in place. There was a lot of shifting around after my bathroom break and quite a few bald spots that I was walking around with as the night went on.

Not that that’s a big deal to most people. But I’m a bit OCD so it bothered me a little bit.

Other than that though this costume was perfect! I wasn’t too hot and it was easy to move around in. What more can you ask for when it comes to a Halloween costume?

Before you start this no-sew tutu project, read this!

How do you figure out the size of you ribbon?

Take a long piece and wrap it around your waist. Make sure you leave an extra foot or so of ribbon at the ends so you can tie it around your waist when you’re wearing it and then cut it.

You want to make sure you can easily fit it around your waist but also have extra ribbon to secure it with a knot when you’re ready to wear it!

How do you know how much tulle you’ll need?

This really depends on the size of the person you’re making it for, how long they want the skirt to be and how full they want it to look.

My rule of thumb is to grab at least 2 spools for a child and double that for an adult. I used 3 spools for mine but it wasn’t as full as it should’ve been and there were gaps in between the knotted pieces of tulle as the night wore on and I was moving around a lot. I think an extra spool would’ve given me the fullness I needed for my own skirt!

How itchy was it? Could you wear it all night without it irritating you?

I will not lie, I inherited my dad’s thick thighs so the overalls bugged me more than the tulle skirt did. I typically wear 5″ inseam on shorts and the overalls were shorter than that and kept riding up and causing discomfort.

But, I had zero problems with the tulle skirt. It is itchy though and I suggest wearing some sort of shorts underneath to stop it from irritating your skin. As long as you do that you should be able to wear it all night long just fine!

Was the outfit cool enough for the Florida heat? Or would you have done something differently if you were to wear it again?

Nope. The outfit was fine and I was comfortable (minus the overalls riding up) all night long. We typically like to wear costumes that aren’t hot or heavy when we do Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and this was perfect for me!

My biggest piece of advice for the Halloween Party (if you go!) is to do a comfortable costume. Going overboard is not our style. We’re comfort over fashion every day of the week.

I have a very creative daughter, who loves to draw. Her favorite subject these days is rainbows, so it came as no surprise when she told me she wanted to be a rainbow for Halloween. A few catalogs came in the mail, and she fell in love with a rainbow costume from Chasing Fireflies. I thought about buying it, but come on! $68 not including shipping. So I did what every frugal mom does…searched Etsy. Tons of rainbow tutu skirts for around $25. After doing the math I thought…hmmm…Pinterest might have a way to make a DIY no sew tutu. Then I found several and thought “Low and behold, I can do this!”

How to Make a No Sew Ballet TutuSo here’s my completely novice, impatient, and frugal (nice way of saying cheap) tutorial of making a DIY super simple no sew tutu. If I can do this, so can you.

materials for diy no sew tutu

1/2 thick elastic — or ribbon to tie
4-6 yards tulle for size 4-5 girls (Walmart is cheapest, .97/yard)
Measuring tape
Scissors
Patience

First things first, how long do you want the skirt? Measure the length, then double it, and add an inch. My daughter wanted it longer…14 inches. So I doubled, added an inch and cut at 29 inches. So that’s the length I cut the first color of fabric. Later I made it 30 inches to make sure it was long enough for my budding diva.

Next cut the tulle into 4 inch strips.
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
Be sure to fold to the fabric over a couple times so you don’t have to cut the tulle the entire length. It’s so flimsy and hard to cut, especially with kitchen shears! (told ya, I’m not a seamstress.)
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
Here’s what it looked like after I finished cutting. Elapsed time, only about 30 minutes. And that’s with the kids playing with it.
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
So now it’s time to assemble. Remember that 1/2″ thick elastic? Yep, now you need to measure the waist and cut it. I would leave it a few inches longer and tie it loosely while assembling the skirt. Then sew it later. Yes, you have to sew like 3 stitches, it’s really easy. And yes, technically it’s not “no sew” if you use elastic. It is “no sew” however if you use ribbon as the base, and tie it in a bow afterwards. I made the mistake of sewing it together prior to making the skirt, and it stretched. I can fix that later though! Here’s what you do…put the elastic on a chair, and start tying knots.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
Already so cute huh? I totally want one of these for me too!

Here’s how you do the knots. Fold the fabric in half, and take it and loop it around the elastic.

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
Disregard my daughters messy chair….please.

Then open the loop…
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
And pull it through.
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
Here’s what the knotted tulle looks like. You can leave them looser if you’d like, it uses less fabric and the knots will be further apart. I personally like them tighter, it keeps the fabric from sliding and makes a fuller skirt too! But whatever floats your boat…

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
ROYGBIV baby! I paid attention in one of those subjects in school. Science was it?

Keeping tying in your pattern until finished. I told you it was simple! Once you get going, this portion only took 30-40 minutes. And here’s what it looks like completed.
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
And Lila modeling it for me when she woke up the next morning. Complete with rainbow fairy wings and hand-drawn rainbow shirt designed by Lila herself! My friend is actually making a rainbow veil headband to complete the Halloween look.
How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu
So so so glad I actually did this myself. Seriously, this was super easy and this DIY no sew tutu turned out too cute! Bonus, I saved a bunch of money. With the wings, makeup, and fabric markers, we spent around $30 to make this. But the skirt portion was literally $6.00 of fabric and elastic. Can’t beat that!

The hardest part of the project was navigating Walmart, and explaining to the dude in the fabric department that tulle is actually fabric, not part of the tool department. What a tool. (pun intended)

Bottom line, if you need a tutu, and don’t want to pay big bucks, give this DIY no sew tutu a try. Totally worth it…and you can unleash your inner twirl!

How to Make a Tulle Skirt Without Sewing

Things You’ll Need

  • Fabric measuring tape
  • 1/2-inch elastic
  • Scissors
  • Chair
  • 6 yards tulle, any color
  • 6 yards tulle, complementary color

A tutu is a short skirt that is traditionally worn by ballet dancers over a leotard. The skirt consists of multiple layers of tulle or netting. The material sticks out horizontally away from the waist. You can make a tutu for your child or yourself without having to sew a single stitch. Wear your no-sew tutu just for fun, as part of a Halloween costume, for a dance class or at a themed birthday party.

Measure around the waist of the individual who is to wear the tutu with a fabric measuring tape. Add 2 inches to the measurement.

Cut a piece of 1/2-inch elastic equal in length to your calculated measurement using a sharp pair of scissors. Tie the ends of the elastic together in an overhand knot. Slip the circle of elastic over the back of a chair, making sure it is not twisted.

Lay 6 yards of tulle in your color choice out flat on a clean work surface. Cut the tulle into strips, 6 inches wide by 36 to 40 inches long. Repeat this process with 6 yards of a second color of tulle if you wish to make a multiple color skirt. Double the yardage of the first color of tulle if you wish the tutu to be a single color.

Layer two to three tulle strips of the first color on top of each other and match up their edges. Fold the strips in half lengthwise. Slip the “U” shaped folded portion of the strips behind the elastic so it is protruding out the bottom side with the straight ends sticking up above the elastic. Pull the loose ends of the tulle strips down through the loop made by “U” shaped fold. Pull the ends completely through and tug on them gently to tighten the tie.

Continue to tie the strips of tulle to your elastic waist band by repeating Step 4. Alternate the colors of tulle if you are making a multicolored tutu. Slide the knotted tulle strips together along the elastic band so they are hanging side by side. Tie the tulle strips over the knot in the elastic to hide it. Stop adding tulle once the elastic waistband is completely covered.

Tie lengths of ribbon to the elastic waistband between the strips of tulle to add streamers to your tutu. Tie a ribbon in a bow and hot glue it over the knotted portion of the waistband to further conceal the knot.

I am certainly not a professional photographer, but I do really enjoy taking photos, especially of my friends and family–I call it “mom-tography.” Last fall some close friends asked me to do a family session for their Christmas card photo. They wanted a look that was fun and playful, with a bright pop of color, so we decided to make a big puffy tulle skirt for their little girl to wear.

Had I known how easy it would be to whip these little puppies up, I would have tried it a long time ago. Their family photos turned out absolutely darling, and I made a mental note to make some full-skirted tutus for my own girls the next time we got around to doing a photo session of our own.

Fast forward almost ten months and here we are.

Luckily this time around I managed to snap actually takes some photos while I was making the skirts, just so you could see how simple they really are. I whipped them both up in about an hour and the girls were so excited about their fancy princess skirts that they happily agreed to pose for me. (P.S. The little jean jackets were a great sale find at the JCrew outlet!)

How to Make Medieval Dresses at Home

You have just gotten home from ballet class and your daughter is bouncing with joy because her beautiful new costume for the recital is finally here. As you open the bag, her excitement grows and her eyes get wide. Then you pull it out of the bag and think, “Oh no. It looks awful.” The beautiful tutu is a crinkled-up mess, and you have no idea how to fix it. This is how most tutus arrive. The most important thing is to put the iron down. Tutus are not “pressed” with an iron but rather with water.

Wet the tutu. In a bathtub or large sink, run warm water over the tutu until the entire garment is completely soaked with water.

Gently shake the tutu to get rid of excess water.

Using the skirt hanger, hang the tutu upside down to dry. The water will weigh the material down and pull out the crinkles while still allowing the tutu to drape properly.

It is very important that the tutu be hung to dry upside down. This will produce a fluffier tutu. If you are unsure which side is right-side up, examine the layers. If the tutu is a “classical” tutu, the short traditional tutus, the bottom layers will be shorter. If the tutu is a “romantic,” or long, tutu, the top layer will generally be a softer material such as chiffon, and the bottom layers are often tulle.

Warnings

Never ever place an iron on a tutu. They are made of synthetic material, and even a cool iron will melt right through.

If the bodice of the costume is attached to the tutu, check to see that the fabric can be submerged in water before beginning. If it cannot, use a spray bottle to wet only the tutu, or carefully use steam from an iron.

If you still have questions about the care of your tutu, ask your child’s ballet teacher for guidance.

A pancake tulle skirt is a tutu made of layers of tulle. The layers of netting fabric make a delicate circle, likened to a pancake because they stick outward from the body forming a flat layer, rather than hanging down toward the floor. This flat skirt, is most notably worn by ballet dancers in Swan Lake as part of their tutus.

Make a waistband. Measure your waist with the measuring tape and cut a strip of wide elastic to the same measurement. Set this aside.

Lay out the tulle fabric. You will use approximately six layers of tulle fabric. For the first tulle layer, measure from the hip line to just above the knee. Write it down. Use the yard stick to mark the measurement and then cut the first layer to size. Next, subtract an inch from the first layer’s measurement for the next layer’s size. Do this for each layer, subtracting an inch from the size of the layer before and cutting. Write all these measurements down.

Gather the first layer of tulle fabric. About a centimeter from the top of the first layer of tulle, make long stitches all the way across. Make sure one end of the stitching is securely tied. Work through another stitch about an inch or so below the first. Then hold the tulle fabric and pull on the thread, this gathers your tulle. Do not start on the other layers until you are sure you will have enough tulle fabric, gathered, to match the length of the elastic strip you cut. It is okay to have a lot of gathered first layers.

Sew the first layer onto the elastic strip. Make sure you sew close to the bottom of the elastic, leaving room for the next five layers to be sewed on.

Gather remaining layers, now that you know the amount it will take to make it along your elastic waistband. Sew them onto the waistband accordingly. The shortest cut layer will be the top layer.

Tie the first layer to the second layer with the thread. You do not have to do this step if you want the layers to hang free, but this will not get you the desired pancake effect. Repeat this tacking process, tying the second layer to the third layer. You do not have to tack it in the same spot. In fact, you can cover these tacks by using satin ribbon tied in pretty bows. The tulle fabric should naturally span out like a pancake after all the tacking is done.

Sew waistband together. Make sure you use a secure knot and a tight stitch. Once your waist band is sewn, go try on your pancake tulle skirt. This is where you will notice little things you need to refine. For example, the skirt is hanging not anything like a pancake. Try using more tacks on the first layer to the second near the waistband. Make any adjustments.

I would like to make a tutu for my neice to wear when she plays dress up. The big fluffy princess tutus that I have seen cost more money than I am willing to spend. Can you tell me how I might make one? Thanks in advance for your help!

I would think you could buy a leotard or one-piece swimming suit (can you find one at a thrift store), and some tulle. Then cut the tulle into strips, gather one edge, and sew it to the leotard.

Or, make a tutu skirt w/ tulle; sew the tulle, in many rows, to a 4-inch-or-so band of fabric to wrap around the waist.

I love making homemade toys and gifts for my daughter and her friends, so when Ella and two of her friends started taking pre-ballet classes, I naturally had to make some no-sew tutus!

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

I had to make three tutus, and I wanted to involve the girls in the process as much as possible. Since these tutus are really forgiving, I had the girls practice their knot-tying with the layers of tulle, and I just went over the finished tutus with a pair of scissors to remove any extremely long ends.

Materials to Make Your Own Tutu:

  • Tulle, 2-3 colours and a total of at least 30-40 feet
  • Elastic headband
  • Scissors
  • Large square of cardboard or DVD case

Ensure that the elastic headband will fit comfortably around your child’s waist or hips. I purchased adult headbands and they were perfect – leaving no lines on the girls after 10 minutes of wear, but also not slipping down.

I went with these elastic-style headbands rather than the wide fabric headbands because I thought these would have less of a chance of slipping and folding over.

A DVD case is the perfect size for your layers of tulle. Wrap the tulle around the DVD case several times and make a single cut to create several uniform-sized pieces for your homemade tutu.

For tying the knots, I created double layers of tulle by laying one piece directly over another and double-knot tied it around the headband.

After showing the girls a few times how to wrap the tulle evenly around the headband and tie a double-knot, I allowed them to do it. I had to add in extra layers when they were done just to fill out the tutu a bit more, but I think they did an awesome job!

How to Make a No Sew Ballet Tutu

I love how the contrasting colours create some depth, and the double folds of tulle make it look like a professional tutu — no one at their dance classes could tell which of our girls was wearing a homemade tutu versus a store-bought tutu.

The only way you can tell that this is a homemade, no-sew tutu is if you look inside at the headband — from the outside, it looks perfect!

Okay. So now let’s get started making out tutu. Here on the table we have our tool, a very lovely combination of purple and pink, which is going to be adorable, and a nice black satin ribbon. Now, our ribbon is about an inch and a half wide. I would say stay between an inch and an inch and a half to tie around the recipient of your tutu.

And the first thing that we’re going to do is measure and prep this ribbon to make the tutu. So to do that you want to put it around the waist of your child, and just mark where the tutu portion is going to start and stop. So to do that, simply go ahead and take it, put it around your child’s waist. You want about a 30 inch long tail. The longer the better. You can always cut it off at the end if it’s too long.

So you’re going to put it around the waist, and just kind of mark with your fingers where you want the tutu to start and stop. So on me, it’s about here. You can then just kind of keep your fingers on it, and then from here, go ahead and tie two knots to signify where the tutu will start and stop. So to do that, all I’m going to do is make a very simple overhead knot. We’ll make a loop. We’ll pull the tail through the loop, keeping to where my finger still is remaining on this spot. So go ahead and pull. There’s our first marker.

Now, the whole time I’ve kept my hand on the other side, so you can go ahead and do the same thing. Make a loop and pull your tutu ribbon through. If you have a hard time keeping a handle on the ribbon, you can always take a marker and mark these two spots and then tie your knots. Then, what you want to do is measure about, again, 30 inches on the other side of the tutu and cut the ribbon off the spool. When you cut it, I recommend cutting at about a 45 degree angle. And this angle will help keep the ribbon from fraying while you’re working with it.

Classical Tutus by Costume Creations UK

The art of making classical tutus is so fascinating that some people imagine this vocation as something that they would like to do for a living. After all, how hard could it possibly be? Dreams are attainable with the right mind-set, but it is always wise to learn the realities and sacrifices of whatever you choose to do for a living. The road to learning professional construction techniques for theatrical costumes is a long one. Very, very long.

95% of the people who attempt tutu making are home sewers trying to make a tutu skirt for a child for fun. Forums are full of frustrated sewers that throw their hands up in the air over out-of-control netting, splitting seams, jamming needles and other mishaps. Doing it right for a fun child’s outfit is hard enough for most people. Few can get it right for real ballet dancers. Very few.

Are There Schools That Teach Tutu-Making Skills?

Yes, students interested in this profession can find the right training if they look hard enough for the right school. Training is far and few between, however. The surprise comes when people realise that a ballet tutu is not something that is simply put together in a sewing course, but is part of the intriguing lifestyle of performing arts experts that have a deep knowledge of the stage, theatrics, drama and presentation of a story to an audience. Professional costume making for ballet includes knowing and understanding roles, characters, choreography and ballet terminology. The layers of knowledge required are thicker than a fluffy tutu skirt, aren’t they?

You must go from this To This

The Curriculum Is Extensive For All Aspects Of Costume Making

Accredited colleges that offer courses on costume making do so through their drama departments. Tutus are just one type of garment that is considered a theatrical costume. Students will not start out measuring and layering tulle, but instead will spend the first part of their studies learning the history of ballet and the science of dramatic stage performance. Books first, scissors later. Nobody can construct anything for an art they know nothing about.

Why The Scarcity Of Ballet Costume Designers?

The theatrical world is losing their available base of experienced costume makers. In this article, Tutu Makers And Proud, We Must Learn Trades, the writer examines this issue with passion. One of the issues is the fact that tutu making is a very specialised niche. It is so specialised, in fact, that the circle of knowledgeable couture designers is shrinking every decade. In the dance venues of London alone, designers are stretched to the limit.

Unlike other professions that will hire a youth right out of a university with the right degree, dance theatres rely heavily on the expertise of costume makers that have been around the block, so to speak.

Understanding The Labour Involved With Professional Costume Making

Instant Gratification Does Not A Costume Make

Can you sit for hours taking tiny stitches on delicate fabric with an eye for perfection? Do you understand the way certain types of materials drape and contour to a moving dancer’s body? Do you have the patience to pick apart those tiny stitches if the garment doesn’t lay right? Can you do this whilst maintaining an urgent deadline? Do you understand how music, emotions, movement and garment design come together to create a soul-stirring ballet presentation? These are just a few questions to ask yourself.

Classical Ballet Traditions Clash With Modern Concepts

What are modern concepts in classical ballet? It means taking a garment construction method that is steeped in history and trying to put a “modern” twist on the design. It can also mean trying to mass-produce cookie-cutter costumes lightning fast. Classical means historically traditional. Slower. Time-consuming effort. Modern means stepping away from the traditional. It means embracing fast ideas, overnight success and quick results. Can you see how this clashes with the ballet profession in general? We have joked here on Tutu-Love about this modern “hurry” sickness that pervades our world and whether someone will try to invent a quick, printable tutu online. Funny, but it smacks of truth.

Good Enough Is Not Good Enough When It Comes To Making Ballet Costumes

Anyone who has their heart set on making a real living with costume making has to realize the high standards that will be expected in the finished product. Do not think that a ballet costume can have the slightest flaw and be okay. Word will spread throughout theatrical venues that your design techniques are less than perfect. Constructing classical tutus are for those who embrace perfection in all they do.

Are Couture Tutu Designers Born Or Made?

Do you think that costumers who make some of the world’s most beautiful tutu designs are simply gifted, or do you believe that anyone can develop the skills to create stage-worthy garments?

Classically perfect ballet tutu in blue made by dance couture expert Monica Newell of Costume Creations U.K. When we consider that this garment is not off the rack, but bespoke, it becomes more than admirable; it is awe-inspiring.

I can tell you what I believe. People who create things of beauty and function for the world of the performing arts by hand are themselves performing artists. They are born with it. Many times this artistic talent will run in the family genes. Those who are born with this talent apply knowledge and skill to what they already have inside them. No wonder the talent pool for this craft is so specialised.

Tutu makers are tradespeople, artists, theatrical wizards and painters of colours. They are visionaries and creators. They take the shapeless and create form and function to it. They produce timeless beauty for others to enjoy. They have the wisdom to embrace and respect time for what it is; an opportunity to keep a beautiful tradition alive. No college course can give you the inner patience required to handle delayed gratification. It cannot take the place of inborn talent or genetics. It will not change your true inner beliefs about what you consider to be fulfilling lifetime work.

People can learn to sew and embellish, but the honing of a craft like tutu making is a lifetime journey.

In August this year Tutus that Dance will be running it’s third tutu Seminar.
Here are some of the reasons a seminar like this is invaluable.

WHY COME TO A SEMINAR?
Like most arts, knowledge and experience are two very major factors. What we are striving to
do is offer both by guiding you, step by step thru construction and more importantly explain and showing “the whys and how’s” . something is done. It’s not just learning how to make a tutu we’re teaching, but WHY a tutu is made the way it is. We don’t just focus on a “project” but teaching the art of tutus. Understanding what a dancer needs, how both lighting and distance effects what you choose, the importance of silhouettes, body lines, and the movement of the tutu….just making a “pretty” tutu is not the goal.
At a seminar, you’ll learn all this in an intense, short period of time that is designed to teach you as much as possible, efficiently as possible, and answer questions as they come up. Each class has notes printed out, so you don’t have to stop and write as we’re working, you’ll also be able to talk with others, share experiences and hopefully build friendships and form new contacts.
More advance classes, will also offer the opportunity to “try” new things, experiment, ask questions, and test things out without the expense of buying all that is needed to do so. We’ll be practicing airbrushing, dyeing and painting, draping fabric, using stretch fabrics, making appliqués, working on shapes and uses of ruffles and much more.
Classes on pattern alteration will show how make alterations both for size and design and how to take a clients measurements and make a custom tutu that fits. Both Women’s fitting and Men’s class will work on real dancers so you can test things out on them as well as ask them questions. So much more useful than learning on a dress form which in most cases is not shaped like a dancer, nor where you can test the movement.
Yes they are long days, and yes there is much to cover, but we do have fun and offer a place to learn the “art of the tutu”. Hope you can join us

How to Make a No Sew Tutu Skirt

Things You’ll Need

  • 6 yards of tulle, 4 inches wide
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • 3/4 to 1 inch wide elastic
  • Adhesive backed hook-and-loop closure

Make a tulle skirt or tutu for an adult or child to wear as a costume. If you pair the skirt with thick tights or leggings, trendy young adults or teenagers can wear it as a fashion statement. Use a single color of tulle for the skirt or make it as colorful as the rainbow by using several colors. If you’re making a costume for a fairy princess, look for tulle with glitter woven into the fabric.

Cut the tulle into strips that are twice as long as you want the skirt to be. If you want a 15-inch skirt, cut 30-inch strips of tulle. The amount you need to cut depends on the width of the skirt. Don’t worry about not cutting enough, as you can always cut more as needed.

Fold each strip of tulle in half.

Wrap the elastic around your waist or the waist of the person who will wear the skirt. Cut the elastic to that length, then trim an additional inch from the elastic so that it will fit around the waist snugly but not too tightly.

Lay the elastic out on a table. Starting in the center of the elastic, drape the strips of tulle over the elastic. The fold of the tulle will be against the top of the elastic.

Tie the ends of each folded strip of tulle together and pull so that the knot is underneath the bottom edge of the elastic. Continue knotting the strips of tulle until the entire length of elastic is covered in tulle.

Cut the hook-and-loop closure into a 2-inch length. Separate the closure so that you have a rough side and a fuzzy side.

Push the tulle strips away from the ends of the elastic on each side, so that there is room to attach the hook and loop closure. Remove the backing from each piece of the closure and attach it to the elastic so that the two sides of the closure meet when you wrap the elastic around your waist.

Hot-glue sequins to the tulle if you want to add extra sparkle to the skirt.
