The VideoLAN project releases regular updates for the VLC Media Player. These updates add new features and fix bugs, but can also include important security patches that help protect your PC or Mac from attack.
VLC automatically notifies you of new updates when you open it, but it doesn’t automatically install them. Here’s how to check manually and get the most recent version of VLC on any platform: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, and iPad.
If you don’t want to use the built-in update process, you don’t have to. You can download the latest version of VLC from VideoLAN’s website. Be sure to only get it from the official website at videolan.org.
How to Update VLC on a Windows PC
On a Windows PC, click Help > Check for Updates to see whether an update is available.
If an update is available, VLC will offer to download and install it for you. Click “Yes” and VLC will download the latest update for you.
VLC will offer to launch the installer once it’s downloaded. Click “install” to close VLC and begin installing it.
Click through the installer to install the new version of VLC. You can just select “Upgrade VLC using previous settings (recommended)” to keep your current VLC options.
Once it’s done, ensure “Run VLC media player” is selected and click “Finish.”
VLC is now up-to-date. If you click Help > Check for Updates again, you’ll see you have the latest version of the media player.
How to Update VLC on a Mac
On a Mac, click VLC > Check for Updates. This option is found on the menu bar at the top of your Mac’s display.
VLC will let you know if an update is available. Click “Install Update” to download it.
When it’s done, click “Install and Relaunch” to install the latest version of VLC and open it.
If you click VLC > Check for Update again, you’ll see a message saying you’re up-to-date with the latest version available.
How to Update VLC on Android, iPhone, iPad, and Linux
On Android, VLC updates through the Google Play Store. On iPhone or iPad, it updates through Apple’s App Store, just like any other application.
The same is true on Linux: Your Linux distribution updates VLC through its normal software update tools.
Just install normal application and software updates to get the latest versions of VLC.

Solution: Using The Help Option
Step 1: Open VLC Media Player, click on the Help option on the top of the window and select Check for Updates.
Step 2: It will now check for any available updates. Wait for it to complete.
Step 3: If any updates available, it will show a dialog box saying – A new version of VLC (3.0.10) is available. In the same dialog box, it asks you – Do you want to download it? Click on Yes to proceed with the download.
Step 4: Wait for the download to complete.
Step 5: In the next prompt, click on the Install button to proceed with the installation.
Step 6: In the VLC Media Player Setup wizard that appears, click on Next.
Step 7: In the next window, check on Upgrade VLC using previous settings (recommended) and press the Next button.
Step 8: Wait for the installation to complete.
Step 9: The VLC Media Player installation is now complete. Click on the Finish button.
Step 10: The VLC Media Player restarts and you can now go to Help and click on About to check the latest version.
You are done. It’s now updated to the latest version – 3.0.10 Vetinari.

If you are using the popular VLC Media Player, you can check updates for it from it’s help menu. It is always recommended to use the latest version because the newly released version contains bug fixes found in the previous VLC version. Let us take a look how we can update VLC Media Player manually.
The problem with this update method is VLC Media Player doesn’t support incremental update much like we used with the Browser like Firefox, Chrome and Vivaldi.
Updating VLC media player
1. Open VLC Player, select Help Menu and click “Check for Updates”
2. VLC Media Player launches an update request and shows if an update is available, like below.
3. If you click ‘Yes’ to download the update, VLC downloads it and asks your permission to install with a dialog ‘ The new version was successfully downloaded. Do you want to close VLC and install it now?’
4. Click ‘Install’, VLC install wizard will run and asks you to take decision to upgrade using previous settings or change settings, choose the former option, this will carry your previous settings to the new version.
5. VLC Setup removes the older version and installs the newer one.
Note: By preferring the upgrade option, you will not lose all your customization done for VLC Player in older version.
With VLC Media Player, you always want the latest version of the software in your computer. There are additional features, security updates and improvements in the app when it is the most up to date version. The VideoLAN group always pushes regular updates and you will get an automated notification when you open the application. If it doesn’t show any update notification, go to Help > Check for Updates from the menu bar and a manual check will be performed. It will look for new versions of VLC Media Player online.
To update VLC Media Player to the latest version in your laptop or desktop:

VLC is one of the most popular open-source multimedia players. It is cross-platform and can play virtually all multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, and different streaming protocols.
This article describes how to install VLC media player on Ubuntu 20.04. VLC can be installed as a snap package via the Snapcraft store or as a deb package through apt .
Install VLC Media Player as a Snap Package #
Snaps are self-contained software packages that include the binary all dependencies needed to run the application. Unlike the standard deb packages, snaps have a larger disk footprint and longer application startup time. The VLC snap packages are regularly updated with the latest security and critical bug fixes.
Snap packages can be installed from either the command-line or via the Ubuntu Software application.
To install VLC, open your terminal ( Ctrl+Alt+T ) and run the following command:
That’s it. VLC has been installed on your Ubuntu desktop, and you can start using it.
Whenever a new version is released, the VLC snap package will be automatically updated in the background.
If you are not comfortable with the command line, open Ubuntu Software, search for “VLC” and install the application.
