The season 4 finale of Jack Ryan makes notable use of the term ‘Code Black’ but what is the meaning of the emergency signal?
*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Jack Ryan season 4* — As a spy thriller, Prime Video’s Jack Ryan series has been no stranger to using military terminology as the titular analyst-turned-agent has dealt with multiple terror and political plots all over the globe but while John Krasinski’s character may understand the various acronyms and codes, viewers can often find themselves puzzled.
Season 4 episode 6 recap
Episode 6 of Jack Ryan season 4 centers on the final throws of Zeyara Lemos’s sinister plan to expose just how fragile US security really is.
During a gnarly scene where Jack is brutally tortured, Lemos reveals some of her scheme to him in typical villain fashion, as she explains that there are a number of bombs headed to the US.
After new arrival Domingo Chavez manages to rescue Jack and take out Lemos for good measure, they head back to DC alongside Mike November and once reunited with James Greer, they quickly spring back into action to find Lemos’s bombs.
Cathy discovers a flash drive hidden by Chao before his death that revealed Lemos planned to smuggle the bombs on a car transporter via the US-Mexico border. Despite having just been tortured, Jack heads straight back to work to foil Zeyara’s plan once and for all.
Code Black meaning in Jack Ryan season 4
In the context of Jack Ryan season 4, Code Black indicates that there is an active bomb threat.
Once Jack and the team identify the truck they believe to be carrying the bombs into the US, they quickly engage Lemos’s men and after a brief but fierce firefight, manage to dispatch the mercenaries.
Knowing that they’re still in imminent danger, Mike November, James Greer and Jack Ryan all repeat the phrase, “Code Black,” before searching for the bombs.
The term Code Black is typically used in hospitals in parts of the US to signify a possible bomb threat according to Healthline.
It may be activated if there is a threat made to a facility or if law enforcement officials have identified a possible bomb in or near the facility.
While its primary use may be in hospitals, Jack Ryan’s writers have clearly felt the need to borrow the term for its explosive finale. It does sound cool, after all.
Season 4 of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is available to stream now on Prime Video after the final episodes landed on Friday, July 14, 2023.
