Norma Lynn Knobel Hunt was well known for her kindness, grace and vivacity throughout her extraordinary life that began on March 28th, 1938 in Greenville Texas. Born to Edward Knobel and Loretta Knobel and their sole child of six children respectively; from an early age, Norma excelled academically and athletically – graduating from Richardson High School with academic distinction as well as impressive athletic accomplishments – and leaving an indelible mark both on the basketball courts as well as within its drill squads.
Academic Progression
After graduating with distinction in 1960 from North Texas State University, Norma continued her education by participating in Chi Omega sorority presidentship and receiving various honours such as Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges recognition. Later she received a Rotary Club fellowship abroad which led her to Dublin, Ireland where she completed additional study.
After she returned home, Norma’s life took an exciting and passionate turn in 1963 when she met Lamar Hunt, an American sports entrepreneur. Their shared love of sports combined with Lamar’s appreciation of Norma’s vibrant personality led them immediately into an instant love affair; an exciting series of football games called “fipple-header” further cemented their connection.
Wedding Bells and New Ventures On January 22, 1964, Norma and Lamar’s marriage was an expression of their undying love and shared interests; an illustration being their attendance at the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck as their wedding celebration. Additionally, Lamar made history at this point when he signed his American Football League TV rights agreement which would later merge into the NFL – all the while being supported by his faithful wife during this thrilling experience.
Influencing Sports
The influence of Norma on sports extended far beyond her role as Lamar’s companion. Unknowingly, she played an instrumental role in shaping its name with gifts of Super Ball toys from 1965 that she gave as Christmas presents for Lamar’s children. Furthermore, their ventures included investments into North American Soccer League franchises such as Chicago Bulls and Dallas Tornado in North American Soccer League franchises, World Championship Tennis tournaments and founding investments into Chicago Bulls franchises from the USSL league. World Championship Tennis competitions were another significant aspect of Lamar’s work.
Cultural Contributions
Beyond sports, Norma and Lamar were avid collectors of antiques and fine art. Their passion led to them amassing an impressive collection, particularly of works created by Thomas Moran. Furthermore, as generous donors to the Dallas Museum of Art, they greatly contributed to raising its profile by purchasing Fredric Edwin Church’s “The Icebergs Gift Program” in 1979 – this purchase alone significantly raised its profile during that year.
Vineyard Ventures Norma has always had an affinity for viticulture, purchasing Bidwell Creek Vineyard in Knight’s Valley, California in 2000 to produce world-class cabernet sauvignon wine. Her dedication and creativity in winemaking became clear when her 2012 vintage “Perfect Season” wine earned near-perfect marks from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate publication.
Family First
Of her many achievements, Norma most appreciated being the mother and grandmother to Clark and Daniel and their children, known by them affectionately as Mimi. She took great pleasure in participating actively in their lives and aiding in their endeavours by attending every Super Bowl game with Lamar as part of the tradition; even after his passing this custom continued until her passing.
