Erwin Olaf Springveld: Who was he?
A Hilversum native, Erwin Olaf Springveld was a Dutch photographer. He was professionally known as “Erwin Olaf” and was born on July 2nd, 1959.
By separating “the worlds of commercial, art, and fashion photography at once,” Time magazine said of his work.
Olaf was well known for his illustrious freelance and commercial work. He collaborated with many multinational corporations, including Nokia, Microsoft, and Levi’s. All of his admirers are familiar with some of his most well-known picture series, including “Grief,” “Rain,” and “Royal Blood.”
Olaf followed a career in photography after completing his journalism studies at the School of Journalism in Utrecht. His art was displayed in galleries and museums all around the world. For instance, among many others, he had exhibitions at Wagner + Partner in Berlin, Flatland Gallery in Amsterdam, Hamiltons Gallery in London, Galerie Magda Danysz in Paris, and Gallery Espacio Minimo in Madrid.
On September 20, 2023, a Wednesday, Erwin Olaf passed away. At the time of his death, he was 64 years old and had long-term emphysema, a chronic respiratory condition. Only a few weeks before to his untimely demise earlier today, Olaf underwent a lung transplant.
The local news sources broke the heartbreaking news of Dutch legend Erwin Olaf’s passing. According to reports, he died with his friends and loved ones by his side.
One of the largest news organisations in the Netherlands, NOS, was the first to report Erwin Olaf’s passing. In the Facebook post conveying the sad news, they referred to him as “one of the most renowned photographers of our country.”
Erwin Olaf, a Dutch photographer, was just 37 years old when he received his emphysema diagnosis for the first time in 1996. To put it in perspective, it is a lung condition that results in breathlessness and is brought on by damage to the lungs’ air sacs’ walls.
Emphysema can be brought on by a variety of factors, however smoking cigarettes is one of the main reasons. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a subtype of it. Unfortunately, this illness cannot be completely cured, but it can be managed.
Erwin Olaf recently had a lung transplant because his health was rapidly declining. He was unable to live, though, and died this morning.
