Journey to the centre of LA, anyone?
When it comes to catching up with TV shows, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day.
“Have you seen this yet? Oh that’s a shame. Oo, but what about that?”
No matter your genre, there are simply so many acclaimed series from the past that deserve your attention, but it arguably always feels more important to stay up to date.
Recent shows tend to earn our attention for obvious reasons, and there are perhaps some shows that simply demand your time.
One of the latest is La Brea, an American drama that began premiering on NBC on Tuesday, September 28th 2021.
Created and executive produced by David Appelbaum, it has taken no time to attract buzz with its wild and imaginative premise. However, even before starting the first episode there are prevalent questions that come to mind. The biggest? Of course, it’s what does La Brea mean?
What does La Brea mean?
The name is surely a reference to the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California, as Brea is actually the Spanish word for tar. These tar pits are a result of tar seeping up from the ground for thousands of years.
Hancock Park was formed around the pits and the location has attracted attention due to creatures being preserved and trapped in the tar over the centuries. As for studies, the George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the pits and exhibiting parts of the animals and so forth that are discovered there.
It’s also a registered National Natural Landmark, with the pits themselves fenced off for the protection of those who seek them out.
Indeed, the name makes sense in the context of the series’ plot, as the narrative commences with the opening of a huge sinkhole in the centre of LA.
People and property are plunged into the unknown and inside the pit they fall witness to a primeval environment, forced to adapt to their new surroundings in order to survive.
Throughout the episodes we’re invited to follow different members of a separated family as they strive to defy new threats and reunite with one another.
It has already been exciting to explore this unique universe, and fortunately, there’s reason to expect that this exploration will continue.

“We have a lot of big plans”
While in conversation with Collider, the show’s creator was asked how many seasons they wish to make moving forward:
“… we’ve had a lot of time to sit and ponder and think about where the show would go. So we have a lot of big plans for what we want to do in future seasons… it has such an interesting group of characters who have their own stories. And it’s also a world that has lots of mysteries that are unfolding.”
He added: “And as soon as you solve one mystery, another one opens up. We think it really has a potential to go for multiple seasons. But as far as like X number of seasons, that’s not something that we’ve tried to nail ourselves to.”
Celebrating a stellar ensemble
The show’s obvious potential doesn’t simply stem from the plot and premise, but also from the excellent cast of actors.
