Netflix’s Wednesday has landed on our screens just in time for Thanksgiving, the perfect time considering the series has strong links with the Pilgrims and early settlers in America.

The series sees Wednesday Addams forced to enroll in the foreboding Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for children with unusual abilities.

Nevermore neighbors the town of Jericho and much of the series takes place there but fans have been left asking where Jericho is supposed to be in Wednesday and if the town is a real place.

Where is Jericho in Wednesday?

In Wednesday, the town of Jericho is nestled in the woodlands of New England, specifically the state of Vermont.

The town in the series was founded in 1625, which would have been just a few short years after 1620 when the Pilgrims settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Jericho’s links to the Pilgrims are strong as the town has its own attraction dedicated to them, known as Pilgrim World.

In Wednesday, the town was founded by a man named Joseph Crackstone who has an ancient link with the Addams Family’s ancestors.

Is Jericho a real place?

The Jericho we see in Wednesday is a fictionalized take on the real-life town of Jericho, Vermont.

Jericho’s name is taken from the ancient city of the same name which was founded around 9600 BCE and is believed to be one oldest cities in the world.

Located in the Jordan Valley, the original Jericho features in the bible as it was the first city conquered by the Israelites after crossing the Jordan River into the Promised Land.

Thanks to its presence in the bible, Jericho has inspired the naming of towns all over the world, most notably a small town in Vermont which is the town where Wednesday is supposedly set. We see several cars bearing Vermont license plates while the nearby town of Burlington also features briefly in the series.

Where the real and fictional Jerichos differ, however, is that the real town was first settled by a European family called the Browns in 1774, almost 150 years after the town in Wednesday was supposedly established by Joseph Crankstone in 1625.

As of the 2020 census, the real town of Jericho and the surrounding area had a population of just over 5,100.

Where was Wednesday filmed?

While it may be set in the New England state of Vermont, Wednesday was actually filmed on a totally different continent. Specifically in the eastern European country of Romania.

Originally, the production team had planned to film in Toronto, Canada but made the switch as Romania offered more fitting locations.

The city of Bucharest and the region of Transylvania were two of the most prominent locations to host filming for Wednesday.

Studio shooting took place at Bucharest Film Studios in Buftea and it was here where the production crew built the set for Jericho’s town square, which can currently be seen on Google Maps.
